Never played Sim City before, but it looks right up my alley with all the time I've spent playing Roller Coaster Tycoon.

Guess its off to check out the previous version and see what its like, though this looks a lot more like RCT 3 than what I remember previous Sim City versions being like.

Message to Maxis

I know the good work you are doing, but some points that we consider to be negative in the game has diminished our enthusiasm for the game SimCity (2013).

You may have noticed that some features and absence of others aren't pleasing the huge community of SimCity fans.

I hope you understand that we aren't a small group and we admire all the effort you have done by making this game.

The negative points of the new SimCity (2013) more mentioned in forums of SimCity fans are:

- No option 100% offline with single player mode.
- Always-on connection to Origin (EA servers).
- Limitations to players in fake single player mode.

- The presence of empty spaces not editable (useless empty spaces) with automatic road connections.
- Absence of terraforming.
- Absence of farms.
- Not being able to save your maps on the hard drive (you will not be able to reload the city to a stage prior to disasters).
- Road connections placed in a fixed and pre-determined location in the map.
- Airport City (the city is only one International Airport, occupying the entire map 2x2km).
- Absence of subway.

- Automatic road connections.
- Player doesn?t have complete control over the zoning by population density (almost automatic zoning).
- Dead space between all the buildings.

- Size of the maps is 2km by 2km (small maps).
- Not being able to control the regional transport.
- Modding restrictions.

I wish Maxis kindly give a response on these points mentioned in several forums that are displeasing to most fans of this wonderful game.

Most of these seem like minor annoyances. The game still looks pretty sweet!

Those videos look epic... been so long since I have played Sim City... it might 'force' me to get a new computer just so I can play it

Would be 'fun' to have a buckeye planet region and track progress in a thread here.

Same here - I played simcity WAY back when and it's always been one of my fondest gaming memories. I'm drooling looking at the preview vids JWins posted.

I haven't played a multiplayer PC game before, will Mac software talk with Windows software? I assume it does?

Absolutely should.

And it sounds like we have lots of Mac folks interested - count me in :)

These don't look minor - at least aren't minor for me at face value:

- No option 100% offline with single player mode.
- Always-on connection to Origin (EA servers).
- Limitations to players in fake single player mode.

I have limited gaming windows in my schedule and I can see a 100% persistent environment in which to Sim could be a serious issue if, for instance, you could only play on the weekends. Unless there are some seriously sophisticated 'auto pilot' pilot options, I could see one's city declining into ruin in a few days offline.

I'm optimistic it'll be viable for a part-time gamer - at least, I sure hope so...

This would be a big issue for me as well. I can't play it daily and might take a few weeks off now and then. So if this becomes a huge issue it might kill the game for alot of people that don't want to play online nor have the time to play alot.

You also might like OTTD (Open Transport Tycoon Deluxe) it's a reverse engineered version of TTD which was the precursor to RCT.

Instead of roller coasters you are building transportation networks (mainly rail).

Railroad Tycoon 3 is a favorite of mine, especially with some of the mods and new maps out there. I love the games where you build economies or businesses - the more detail, the better. Sid Meier's Railroads! was okay, but cutesified/simplified, which is what I hope isn't the case for the new SimCity. I've seen an open source takeoff of RT, but haven't tried it yet.

A friend of mine made an interesting point about this game. He thought it was looking like EA/Maxis was trying to cater to the Farmville crowd, hopefully that doesn't come out to be true. For this game has gone from a preorder to a wait and see what it's like.
