Deaf fan sues Ohio State to get captions at games

A deaf Ohio State University fan wants the school to put captions on its scoreboards and televisions in concession areas at football and basketball games.

Vincent Sabino, a 32-year-old Hilliard resident, has asked the federal court in Columbus to order the changes under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
"The PA announcer says, 'Wells carries the ball for 4 yards and is tackled by Jones.' The PA announcer says something to that effect after every play," said Marc Charmatz, a lawyer with the National Association of the Deaf. "These are part of the game. And when a deaf person's sitting in the stands, they're not getting that part. They're just not."
The association, based in Silver Spring, Md., filed the case through a Hilliard law firm. The group won a similar suit against the National Football League's Washington Redskins in 2006.
OSU spokesman Jim Lynch said the university is working with Sabino's attorneys to reach a settlement. Many options, including scoreboard captions, are being examined. Neither he nor Sabino's attorneys would discuss specifics.
The first correspondence the university received from Sabino was in a letter requesting action, Lynch said. "The university was in the process of responding to that letter, and we were surprised to see that lawsuit filed prior to the lawyers' getting involved.
"The bottom line is, had the individual called us, we would have taken action."
The letter was mailed and faxed to OSU's Office of Legal Affairs on May 21 and asked the university to respond by June 10, said Laren Knoll, Sabino's Hilliard attorney. The lawsuit was filed on June 30.

Poll: Should Ohio State provide "captions" for the deaf on the scoreboard/television sets inside Ohio Stadium?

1. Yes
2. No
3. I don't care
4. I didn't hear the question

First, how many deaf people attend OSU games? Second, the PA announcer really doesn't provide a wealth of information, and the down/yards-to-go stats are already on the scoreboards, not to mention the jumbotron showing the picture of the Buckeye making the play (whether on offense or defense). There is already enough "readable" information being provided...

EDIT: I'm against closed-captioning being put on the screens around the stadium. It covers up way too much of the picture.

Just pay him his money and leave the scoreboards alone.

Don't insult our intelligence by acting like this guy is missing out by not being able to hear the fucking PA announcer at a football game. Whats next, do we have to hold up cards to do an OH-IO?

Hell everytime I mention my idea of a sports network that doesn't use announcers, just shows the game and gives down/distance/score, people like it. If you have a basic understanding of the game of football you don't need the audio, just the visual.

Sell that shit.

Um...I haven't been to a game in a few years, but if the fuckin' little girl cartoons are still announcing first downs I doubt I'd be watching much of the scoreboard anyways, save for instant replays. Put the fuckin' captions up if it means taking down the fucking ridiculous graphics they use half the time.

I would prefer they accommodate the hearing impaired so long as it doesn't ruin the big screen and crowd the scoreboards. I would actually think it would be cool if they put a separate smaller scrolling displays that would display the play call. You would only need 3 or 4 of them and they really would not have to be anything too fancy. Then just set the TVs in the concession and other exterior areas to display closed captioning. That should suffice in making appropriate accommodations. Otherwise I don't really care.

What I do not want to see is the normal experience of the scoreboards to be interrupted too much. I also would hate to see the University having to spend a bunch of money on this either.

Regaredless, Ohio State's hands are going to be forced in this. There is no stadning pat on this issue, because the precident has already been set for this type of thing. All this lawyering right now will soon give way when Ohio State capitulates, makes a proposal to make the changes and likely pays this guy a small settlement. No reason to drag this one out because it's just not a battle they are likely to win.

Put captions up (perhaps with pic/name of tackler and tacklee), but only if you also remove all of the idiotic animations and silence the announcer. The majority of fans I've talked to loathe his empty cheer requests. The o-h-i-o chant is great, and at its best when it is student started or done in hostile territory. Doing it after a nasal nerdy voice calls for it just isn't fun. Don't even get me started on 'that's another buckeye ________'. :smash:

Save that canned nonsense for stale basketball arenas. It dramatically cheapens the football experience.
