Should have Let Them Score at End

CalFan

Newbie
Ohio State made a mistake last night not letting Texas score at the end with about 2 minutes left. You can't let them run the clock out on you. I believe they had a much better chance of winning the game by letting Texas score, taking the ball with over 2 minutes left and trying to score a touchdown and a game tying 2 point conversion. You control your own destiny with the ball and a chance to score albeit not the easiest task. Tackling Vince Young short of the goal line actually HURT their chances. It was evident that Ohio State and Texas both did not understand this nor did the announcers. It's a situation that comes up every now and then and more often in shoot out games, but few coaches understand it.

I do applaud both Texas and Ohio St. for scheduling the game in an age when football powers usually avoid tough non conference games. It was a great game to watch. Great defense on Vince Young. I feared the 6 point lead would not hold up however. You need to get touchdowns in the red zone. Not sure why 10 was not in the game on the drive when 12 fumbled?
10 looked like the obvious choice to me.

Well, the team looks good enough to me to win the rest of their games. Good luck!

nice to see a pac-10 fan on here. how did your game go yesterday i saw the score, something like 56-17? im curious because i want to see USC get there ass handed to them sometime soon.

thanks for the team praising, its nice to see that everyone noticed we easily could/should have won that game, it crossed my mind at the end of the game, but ive never seen it happen before.

So you are saying that the defense should have let up and just let vince young score? And what if we would have knocked the ball lose and gotten a fumble and ran it back or an int?

That has to be the dumbest idea I have every heard. But I guess that is why you are a cal fan

You knew they wernt going to throw the ball and you knew they were going to run with two hands on the ball. If you let them score you can have time with 2 to's to go down the field score and go for 2 and go to ot.

i think letting them score and being down by 8, then getting the kickoff, and getting good field position(i'm mean really good position with the returns our guys were making all night) and getting the ball most likely past the 40 yard line is a lot better than getting the ball at the 1 yard line, with 99 yards to go and under 2 min.'s, i agree with you

I don't think you can ever tell your D to let them score... If we would of held them to 3 and a FG it would of been alot better than just letting them score.

It didn't turn out well the way it happend but you can't just give up.

umm well i think i agree more with the cal fan then you....i vince young saw the LB's and just covered up the ball, VY was not going to fumble that ball.

i dont know what would have been better, starting at the 1 and trying to get into FG range, or having them kick to teddy and santonio(which was working for us the whole game) and maybe only having to go 70, 60, 50, maybe 40, yards for a TD.and a 2 point conversion...after what happened it is easy to say that we should have let him score.

but...i just cant wait until next week.

EDIT: i still think we should be ranked #4 or #5...we lost by INCHES.... we could go throught the teams in the top 10 and we are probalby better than 6 or 7 of them.

Does this surprise you, Cal? We got outcoached, pure and simple.

The better, more talented team got beat.

It is just so heartbreaking to see a much better football team get beat, especially with how hard our kids work and play.

You are misguided a little. If your goal is to win a national championship and the game, you need to think with a little more vision. I know it sounds like the right thing to do, stop the offense short of the goal line. But the ultimate goal is to win the game so you can compete for a nat'l title. But by stopping the run (they weren't gonna pass) you are killing the clock and your chances of coming back. Time is more important than that score. So you got what you wanted. BUT you lost the game and a chance at a national title in the first game of the season because your coach has no vision. At best you will be fighting for a BCS bid, maybe. I lost a lot of money on that game, ha ha!:osu:

I am really surprised but what I am hearing.

You never have your defense let up and intentionally allow the other team to score. That style of play does not show the attitude of a champion.

Sure, it is easy to second guess what was done after the fact when you know the results didn't work out correctly, but when you are in the middle of a game, you just don't tell your players to give up.

My son and I were actually talking about that after Texas ran the first play. But I thought of it as more of a math exercise than any kind of football strategy.

A fumble was a long shot - but going the length of the field and making the two point conversion wasn't exactly a sure thing.

Never seen it done, never expect to.

it is far from a dumb idea as you can see from the other Ohio St. fans that understand what I'm saying. It's not a situation you want to be in, but it would of given you the BEST chance to win the game. If you give up a field goal, you still need a touchdown to win anyway and now you have no time. If I'm Texas, I don't even try a field goal. I just milk the clock down inside of 20 seconds and turn it over to your offense. Oh, by the way, this Cal fan has an IQ of 140:)
