Should football players be held to a higher standard?

Yes they should.

To put it simply, they are on scholarship to play football and represent our university. What a player does reflects the entire university, so they should be held to a higher standard. Other students pay thousands.

Exactly, but you just can't win with some people...they don't understand that priviledges carry with them responsibilities, something that JT takes the lead in taking very seriously.

I don't think you're in the position to say this. He could have reflected on what happened and could be very sorry for what he did. He could have talked with coaches or family regarding his actions and could have learned his lesson based on those conversations. I'm not trying to be argumentative, but I don't know how you can make such a definitive statement that Alex hasn't yet learned his lesson from this. No offense, but you have no idea what impact the events of the last few days might have had on him. Regardless, people on this board calling him or his actions stupid adds nothing positive to the situation IMO.

But you are in a position to say that he has?!?

Look, he may be very remorseful for his actions. My point, that was lost on you, is that no matter what level of remorse he may have, JT will ensure that he most assuredly learns a lesson. As a father, there have been times that my sons have done something wrong and definitely been remorseful about it and verbalized as much, and I believe that was the case. But I still deal out some punishment to ensure that the lesson has been learned. And JT will as well as it pertains to Alex. That is how I can make a statement that Alex has not yet learned his lesson, because he has not yet "suffered" the punishment that JT will deal out.

And finally, the action of drinking and driving IS stupid and if there is one person on this board who reads that and does not drive while under the influence, then there will have been something positive come out of this no matter what you may think.

I never said that. I said that he could be--go back and check it, fella. What's even more sad in my opinion is that people on this site are willing to call Alex a dummy (yes, someone actually had the audacity to do so) and his actions stupid even though to my knowledge he's not yet been convicted of anything. That's terrible IMO.

Well Skippy, I did go back and check and here is what you said on p. 3 post #40:

Like I said before, I'm sure Alex has already learned his lesson from all of this and feels very sorry about it. He certainly doesn't need grandiose statements by you "to help him or anyone else learn a lesson from this."
Any thing else you need checked?

At least be aware of what you post so as not to contradict yourself so quickly.

What is even more sad, in my opinion, is your absolute ignorance in not realizing that people are calling his actions dumb and his decision dumb. I would bet you my life savings Alex would agree with that assessment based on his current status.

Get off the soapbox already fella.

ok boys, I'll weigh in. Alex's actions speak for themselves. On their own merit they have nothing to do with whether he's a Buckeye football player or not. You take a drink, you DON'T get behind the wheel.
As far as "standards" go. Again, what's the difference? It's really more about accountablility and yes you are accountable to the team for your actions in ways that the average joe is not. Is it fair? YES.
It IS a privilege to be an Ohio State Buckeye...................or a Michigan Wolverine or a USC Trojan or any other team you might belong to. You knew it when you signed your letter of intent. You knew that there are penalties over and above "the law" for mistakes. Just as there are, as part of being a Buckeye, rewards that are unavailbale to the average joe.

That's probably true, but how likely is it to happen? I'd imagine that most people who drink at all drive regularly after having > 1 beer per hour, which is all that it takes to be over the legal limit. If that's the case, I'd call such a person who does so regularly a hypocrite even if he disavows such actions after each such instance.

You are forgetting one MAJOR thing in your side of this argument. The minute Boones lips touches one sip of alcohol, he is pretty much over the legel limit and has committed a crime. Boone is under 21, therefore his consumption alone has violated law. At only 18 years old, under Ohio law, he can be hit with a DUI, having a BA level as low as .02. Therefore, he will likely get a DUI AND a charge for underage alcohol comsumption.

Remember, this arguement might be one thing if Boone was 21 and driving home from a bar, where legally he is allowed to drink. It take an even more severe curve when hes not even allowed to have any alcohol what-so-ever. So his mistake just got even bigger.
