Do you not think A.J. Hawk would've been drafted if he had played at a MAC school?

Probably. The better question is, would Homan, Spitler, Rolle, Schlegel, etc.?

There's a reason that we were all completely disappointed by our LB play this year. When a kid rises to a starting LB position at OSU, it means something compared to playing LB at 99% of the rest of college football. Greatness is not hoped for, but expected because you play LB for The Ohio State University.

In the last ten years, the following linebackers were drafted:

Ross Homan
Brian Rolle
Austin Spitler
James Laurinaitis
Marcus Freeman
Larry Grant
AJ Hawk
Bobby Carpenter
Anthony Schlegel
Rob Reynolds
Cie Grant
Matt Willhelm
Courtland Bullard

Is that not just about all of our starters at LB? Even a guy like Spitler who only started a year.

On the flip side, ECU has not had a LB drafted since 1994.

So?

"Making" it to the NFL is a broad term. Getting drafted doesn't amount to much in a lot of kids eyes. Are they productive at the next level? That's the question. If you listen to a lot of NFL coaches they talk about certain schools doing a much better job than others at getting young men ready for the NFL. That's what we can and should hope for in Urban AND HIS STAFF. History has shown very positive results in this regard. Let's hope Mr. Marcus sees it this way. Personally I don't buy the "if you are good and play at _____ cow pie school the NFL will find you" line. For every Jerry Rice type that come out of nowhere there are dozens of studs that come from the top end schools. If you are a young kid with talent which odds are you going to side with?

Uh, no, that's not "just about all of our starters". I've also put the round in which each LB was draft in parentheses next to their name. Over half were drafted in 5th round or later. Of our 13 LBs drafted in the last decade, only three were selected within the first two rounds. On the other hand, the following schools have had LBs drafted within the first two rounds in the last decade:

Utah (Koa Misi)
Wake Forrest (Aaron Curry)
Hampton (Justin Durant)
UTEP (Thomas Howard)
Troy State (Demarcus Ware)
Western Michigan (Jason Babin)
West Texas A&M (not TAMU) (Chaun Thompson)

While we at Ohio State have it fortunate to get more players as a whole that can and do develop into talent that the NFL recognizes, the above seven LBs show that no matter what school you go to, you can get noticed if you are good enough. No of those seven would've likely got drafted much higher if they were at Ohio State rather than where they were.

So in ten years there are seven guys from schools not necessarily known for high draft picks that had guys go early. Seven. Total. We had six go in the first two days in that time span. Our LBs who play only sixty percent of the snaps for one season (Spitler) have a decent shot at being drafted. It's simple math: Ohio State gives you a much higher shot at being drafted than a place like Utah, Wake, ECU.

Being a good player gives you a good shot at getting drafted. Ohio State tends to have good players, thus many Ohio State players get drafted. If you think the Dolphins drafted Austin Spitler (with the 252nd pick) because he went to OSU then I don't know what to tell you.

You say that as if Ohio State pulls guys out of thin air and turns them into pro linebackers.

The NFL will find these guys no matter where they go to college. The elite college programs often find them first though, which is the real reason why you see more guys drafted out of Ohio State, USC, etc. To say that it's the other way around sells short the innate talent of many of these players.
