Ohioans generally weren't thrilled when Shawn Crable chose to go blue.

Will they feel differently if the draft requires him to go orange?

Crable wore the orange and black of the Massillon Tigers before picking Michigan over Ohio State in 2003. One NFL position into which he projects, outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme, suggests he could go orange and brown this weekend.

Indications are Cleveland might start maneuvering toward a trade into Round 3 on Sunday if an outside linebacker they have targeted drops through the NFL Draft's first two rounds Saturday. Is Crable that linebacker?

The Browns have spent an unusual amount of time evaluating Crable, an intriguing talent on whom draft experts can't seem to agree. NFL Draft Scout rates him as the No. 85 player in the draft (Round 3 grade). Russ Lande, a scout hired by The Sporting News, has Cleveland taking Crable in Round 6 of his mock draft.

Crable's dream now leads back to Ohio

Wolverines LB looks to Browns in draft
Friday, April 25, 2008Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
Ella Kirkland remembers Ohio State coach Jim Tressel sitting on her couch in Massillon a few years back, trying to recruit her foster son, Shawn Crable, a star defensive player for the Massillon Tigers.
"Coach Tressel was such a nice man, and we were really impressed," said Kirkland. "But it was Shawn's lifelong dream to play for Michigan.
"He always wanted to be a Wolverine."

Crable, whom the Browns spent an hour with at the NFL Combine in February and might land in the fourth round of this weekend's draft, became just that. As an outside line backer for the Wolverines, he finished second in the nation with 28.5 tackles for losses last season and added 7.5 sacks.
Curiously, Crable wasn't one of the 30 players the Browns brought in to Berea for pre-draft visits.

More interesting Shawn Crable-related tidbits continue to come out of New England Patriots camp, including a report in Sunday's Boston Herald about Bill Belichick dogging the linebacker about his pivotal late hit on quarterback Troy Smith in the 2006 Michigan-Ohio State game:
One topic that came up was Crable's helmet-to-helmet hit of Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith, which produced a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty and was a pivotal fourth-quarter play in Michigan's 42-39 loss to the Buckeyes in a 2006 game.

While the replay is a favorite hit on YouTube, it didn't go over big with the Pats coach. Crable said Belichick and members of the coaching staff first

asked him if he enjoyed getting penalties.

"I said 'No,' " the former Michigan linebacker said, recalling the conversation. "They said, 'We don't do penalties here.' "

Belichick added, "Crable has to work on his linebacking skills, but his camera skills are second to none. He can contribute right away."

FROM STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS

FOXBOROUGH, MASS. Shawn Crable signed with the New England Patriots on Monday, allowing the former Massillon Washington High School standout to attend the team's training camp when it opens Thursday.

Crable was taken in the third round (78th pick overall) out of Michigan. He had 148 career tackles to rank 10th on the Wolverines' career list. The 6-foot-5, 243-pound linebacker had 16 career sacks and 43 tackles for losses, the seventh most in Michigan history.

As a senior, Crable set a school record with 28 1/2 tackles for loss, second-best in the nation. His 90 tackles as a senior were a career high.

Crable, who will wear No. 98, starred in both football and basketball at Massillon. He led the Tigers on deep postseason runs in each sport.

Recent Edits to SC's Wiki

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shawn_Crable

Shawn James Crable (born December 26, 1984 in Massillon, Ohio) is an American football linebacker for the New England Patriots of the National Football League. He was drafted by the Patriots in the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft. He played college football at Michigan.
Many recall Shawn for making a surprise announcement that he would attend The University of Michigan. This was a suprise as he was considered likely to stay in his home state to play for The Ohio State University. As fate would have it, Shawn is also equally well remembered for a late hit on Heisman winning quarterback, Troy Smith, from The Ohio State University. The late hit was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct and fifteen yards. This likely cost The University of Michigan an opportunity to give Lloyd Carr only his second win against Jim Tressel?s Buckeyes.
Lloyd Carr is now no longer coaching at the University of Michigan.

Geesh, the Browns sure do like to draft players that OSU fans love to hate.

i told all my friends that if they drafted brady quinn i would turn in my browns fan card... because i couldn't root for brady quinn throwing the ball to braylon edwards and kellen winslow jr...

so the day of the draft, when the browns picked thomas, everyone called me that i could still be a fan... then espn reported that the browns were looking to move back up in the 1st round to get him... then they did... then i started looking for a new team.... but he didn't play last year, so i held on a little... we will see this year
