SG Walter Offutt (Asst. BBall Coach Toledo Rockets)

Offutt headed to Wright State
Posted: January 10, 2010

Walter Offutt, a Warren Central High School graduate, told the Albuquerque (N.M.) Journal that he intends to transfer to Wright State to play college basketball.

Offutt, a 6-3 sophomore guard, earlier announced he was leaving Ohio State and appeared headed to New Mexico.

However, he told the newspaper that Lobos coach Steve Alford wanted him to sit out for a year and half before becoming eligible.

Ohio State is on the quarter system, as is Wright State. Offutt said he could transfer, sit out for one year and miss just one game at Wright State next season.

FAIRBORN ? So this is what they mean by fast-break basketball.

Seven weeks ago he was playing for the Ohio State Buckeyes. One week ago, he planned to transfer to New Mexico. A few days ago he decided instead to join one of his best friends from high school and play at Eastern Kentucky.

And yet just moments after Wright State had edged Valparaiso 59-57, Sunday, Jan. 10, at the Nutter Center, there he was being ushered into the Raiders? dressing room where he was introduced to the jubilant players as their newest teammate.

?It?s just crazy, everything?s happened so fast,? said Walter Offutt, who begins classes at WSU today. ?Actually, it was a little awkward at first.?

Offutt didn?t know many of the players names ? not even one whose apartment he has moved into ? nor all the coaches.

And yet he wore the two best things he could have shown up with. He had on a green-and-white hoodie: ?I looked in my closet and said ?Yeah, I think green?s our color.?

Better yet, he was wearing a smile, something that had been missing earlier this season with the Buckeyes, when, as a 6-foot-3 backup guard, he was seeing limited playing time.

?I know I can play,? he said. ?And I really think I can help this team.?

WSU adviser helps OSU transfer beat class deadline
By Marc Katz, Staff Writer

FAIRBORN ? Megan Watson had to act fast on Friday, Jan. 8, when she was informed that Walter Offutt wanted to join the Wright State men?s basketball team.

Watson is the academic adviser for athletics, with an office just inside the lobby at the Setzer Pavilion/Mills-Morgan Center.

WSU is on a quarter system (which will change to semesters in the fall of 2012) and the winter quarter had already started five days before.

?Friday was the last day you can apply to go to class,? Watson said. ?If you wait until Monday, you have to get written permission from each professor of each class you take.?

Offutt, who was a sophomore at Ohio State and has two years of eligibility remaining, decided in late November that he wanted to leave Columbus because he wasn?t playing as much as he wanted. At first, he thought he would transfer to New Mexico, but found out the Lobos were going to ask him to sit out two years ? this one and another ? since their class schedule didn?t match up as well, and New Mexico?s roster was filled with guards anyway.

Walter Offutt, a 6-foot-3 guard who transferred to Wright State from Ohio State in the winter, will leave WSU when the current quarter ends, Offutt said today, April 21.
Offutt said he is considering walking on to the roster at Indiana or possibly joining former OSU assistant coach John Groce at Ohio University, where Groce is the head coach.
He was scheduled to sit out the fall quarter of 2010 and have two seasons of eligibility remaining.
A product of Warren Central High School in Indianapolis, Offutt played in 102 minutes in 21 games for OSU as a freshman in 2008-09. He appeared in two games this past season before leaving the Buckeyes.
The transfer will leave Wright State with three open scholarships for next season.

Rivals $ - Q&A with Walter Offutt

4/28

From Peegs...down to Ohio and Indiana and will decide in the next week or so...talks about what is going into his decision and how academics are playing into it...talks about how stacked the OSU roster was and how where he feels he can help the two programs he is looking at.

At least he is honest about why he was buried on the depth chart, although you can tell he is still frustrated by Thad's decision to play guys 40 minutes a game...

The kid might believe a little too much in his abilities, but the kid can play and he should of been playing here last year.

To me he wasn't in the top rotation, so the head coach was not thinking much about him...which frustrated him, and is why he left...

If he plays at IU he will be a very good player for them...

OU might honestly be the better team the next couple years, as they have everyone coming back from their team last year, and they were young, and Offut adds more talent to that team.

Can he play this coming year or will he have to sit out another year because of transfering?

Ex-Warren hoops star wants to play for IU
By Jeff Rabjohns
Posted: April 29, 2010

Indiana University is on the verge of getting some help from a former Indianapolis prep star.

Warren Central graduate Walter Offutt said today he?s planning to walk on and play basketball for coach Tom Crean, if his financial aid package comes through.

The 6-3 guard was a top-100 recruit coming out of high school in 2008. He can not receive a scholarship at IU because he spent one season at Ohio State and the Big Ten prohibits players from transferring from one conference school to another and being put on an athletic scholarship.

?My mom is supposed to be having a meeting this weekend with the financial aid people, making sure I?ll be able to pay for everything with financial aid,? Offutt said Thursday. ?As long as that happens, it looks like I?ll be headed to Indiana.?
