Offutt's decision: Ohio scholarship or walk on at IU
By Jeff Rabjohns
Posted: May 7, 2010
Walter Offutt said Thursday it's now "50-50" between playing basketball for Indiana University or Ohio.
Offutt's mom visited IU on Thursday to check on his financial aid package, and he said the meeting went well. Offutt's situation has changed because Ohio now has a scholarship it can offer him.
A former national top-100 recruit out of Warren Central High School, Offutt can't receive an athletic scholarship at IU because he initially played at Ohio State and the Big Ten prohibits players from being on scholarship at two schools in the league.
Ohio is coached by John Groce, who recruited Offutt to Ohio State out of high school. Offutt plans to visit Ohio this weekend, then make a decision next week.
"Ohio was always right there, but they didn't have a scholarship," the 6-3 guard said. "One opened up and now it's really 50-50. As far as walking on at IU, things look really good from the financial part.
"But Ohio's offering a full ride, and as far as my relationship with John Groce, player-coach relationships don't get any better than me and John Groce."
Offutt, who had two knee injuries in high school, transferred briefly to Wright State in January and likely would have two years of eligibility if he waited until the fall of 2011 to begin playing.
"It's going to be a tough decision," he said. "Obviously Indiana is in the Big Ten and Ohio is in the (Mid-American Conference), but Indiana is struggling and not where they used to be.
"At Ohio, John Groce is recruiting good players, they're going to be picked to win their league, I think, and they're going to go to the NCAA Tournament. If I go there, I'd get that exposure and my dream is still to go to the NBA."
OSU men's basketball: Offutt to transfer to Ohio
Monday, May 17, 2010
Former Ohio State player Walter Offutt said that he would transfer to Ohio University and enroll for the summer semester. Offutt, a 6-foot-3 guard from Indianapolis, scored 14 points in two games for the Buckeyes last season before deciding to transfer.
Offutt enrolled at Wright State, but said he left because the coaching staff misled him into believing the school had a major in sports management.
"I was looking for playing time, but academics played as big a role in my decision to come to Ohio,'' he said.

We should have a separate forum for guys that leave The Ohio State University before they graduate because they are really not "Alumni" of this fine institution. That wouldn't be too much work would it

GO BOBCATS!
The Bobcats will be very good under Groce but for how many years I am not sure because a big-time school will come a callin for him. Not sure about next year because I believe that Bassett has declared for the NBAKingLeon;1705230; said:OU is gonna be a MAC powerhouse for years with Groce at the helm. Good decision

You are correct about that Piney because OU was one of the first universities in the country to start a sports administration program. Started one back in the early to mid 60s.
