SG Walter Offutt (Asst. BBall Coach Toledo Rockets)

This one is on Matta...No reason why he should not of been playing more, and been in the plans...

I can see both sides but I tend to agree with you here.

Spreading minutes in college basketball is a tricky thing. For a lot of players, especially guards, it's not difficult at all to play all 40 minutes and not be too worn out because of the constant tv timeouts. I like how Izzo (for example) spreads the minutes and keeps more players happy but it would be tempting as a coach to play your best players the whole time.

From the little I've seen of Offutt I don't think it's too big of a talent drop off that you can't have him take 15 of those minutes a game, if anything, just so that he's here to play 25+ the next two years.

Good luck Walter. I'm disappointed to see him go, but I understand it as well. I am suprised that he has seen so little court time this year, but I'm not at practice so I don't honestly know what PJ (ball handling and energy?) and Simmons (shooting, scoring?) bring to the table that have them taking all the substitution minutes with Walter getting none.

I just remember some of the things Matta said about Walter when he signed his LOI, about how he could be such a great defender. I expected he would see some decent minutes this year leading to an even greater impact next year. Maybe he also knows/suspects (fingers crossed) that Buford, Turner or both are returning leading to few minutes next year as well.

While we don't like to see Walter go we need point guards so if this opens a spot up for another one, that's good.
Best of luck Walter.

Go BUCKS,:oh::io:
We really don't need another PG for next season with the possible return of Turner then with our incoming class that includes Sibert and Lenzelle Smith who many say is capable of handling the PG position. As CBF40 mentioned in the main basketball thread this does nothing but hurt continuity of the program but that type of discussion does not belong here.

Offutt to check out New Mexico

Sophomore Walter Offutt will visit New Mexico this weekend and watch the Lobos' game against New Mexico State on Saturday, according to the Albuquerque Journal.

Offutt left the Ohio State team last week and said he wanted to transfer to a program where he would get more playing time next year when he becomes eligible.

New Mexico coach Steve Alford is an Indiana native and former Iowa coach who undoubtedly is familiar with Offutt, who is from Indianapolis.

Offutt is finishing the fall quarter at Ohio State before transferring. This is the final week of classes; final exams are next week.

There are a lot of things a coach has to consider in doling out PT, but if I am Simmons or Hill and I see Offutt taking minutes I earned in practice just to keep him happy that might effect how hard I work to earn those minutes in the future.

When Krenzel and McMullen were both seniors it puzzled me at the time that McMullen got the mop up minutes over RS Zwick or Smith even though they were going to be the next year's QBs and McMullen would be gone. But it was the right thing to do. It was the only thing to do if you want to maintain the integrity of your team.

Note to Walter: I don't know if you were pressured from family and friends to transfer from Ohio State but I think you will learn in life the old adage that patience is a virtue. With the unfortunate injury to Evan Turner, I think you would have seen a great deal of playing time this year. Good luck at your new school by your really missed a golden opportunity which is unfortunate.

I don't think that he should make a decision based on the possibility on someone getting injured. He wants to play based off of his merits as opposed to someone else not being available. An in all honesty, he should have already been getting minutes.

Matta has always played a short bench even with his great teams at X. Saying that, I do agree with you that he probably should have seen some more minutes just to give some of the other guys a rest as cbf40 has mentioned numerous times. However, we also don't know what goes on in practice. At least, I don't.

Somehow I doubt Walt reads Buckeye fan boards so he can see smug commentary as to how poorly he's handled things. :roll1:

"It's really going to test how good of a coach coach Matta is. He's a good coach and he has a good staff, but it puts you at a disadvantage when you don't play your bench players," said Walter Offutt, who decided to transfer from Ohio State two weeks ago after not playing at all in the third and fourth games of the season against North Carolina and California.

"It's weird. I don't get it," Offutt said. "I talked to numerous other coaches and they ask me why he doesn't use his bench, and I can't give a reason for that."
"It hurts them in the long run," Offutt said. "People are thinking about this [highly-rated 2010] recruiting class coming in, and he has to start using his bench because young guys have to play to develop. I wasn't developed sitting on the bench, so I had to go. I can't get better sitting on the bench. That's what's hurting them, guys not used to playing minutes."

Offutt, obviously, had a personal experience at Ohio State that affected his view. But he doesn't handle himself as a malcontent. Unhappy with his playing time as a freshman, he stuck around for his sophomore season with new hope. Little changed.

With Evan Turner healing, Ohio State will have to hope it can find a sturdy bench for support | Ohio State Buckeyes - cleveland.com - - cleveland.com

Official: Offutt to New Mexico

Walter Offutt said in a text message to me tonight that he is transferring to New Mexico.

Offutt, a sophomore guard from Indianapolis, left the Buckeyes on Nov.23 because of a lack of playing time.

He visited New Mexico on Dec.5-6 but had to complete fall-quarter classes and exams at Ohio State before he could transfer.

New Mexico is coached by Steve Alford, an Indiana native who has close ties to the Indiana Elite AAU program for which Offutt played
