SG Jon Diebler (2nd-Most Big Ten career 3-Pointers, Butler Recruiting Director)

If Jon Diebler plays "matador defense," Jimmer Fredette plays "bullfight spectator" defense.
True, but this is at least in part a reflection of the different roles the two players held on their teams. Fredette was almost certainly instructed to lay off on defense, in order to avoid fouls at all costs. Because if he got in foul trouble, his team got in trouble. Diebler wasn't under the same constraint, because he wasn't personally responsible for 80% of his team's offense.

edit: Which isn't to say that it's impossible for a player to be the center of his team's offense, and still play very good defense. It is possible, and guys have done it. But if you're far and away your team's most important offensive weapon, and your defense is mediocre, it makes sense to lay off the defensive intensity in order to avoid fouls.

Relative to Diebler's defense, the problems don't relate to lack of effort or lack of interest. Diebler played very smart defense for his last 3 years. Nonetheless, at 6-6 and without superb athleticism, he was often called upon to guard smaller, quicker players. He struggled with those players simply because he isn't quick enough. Overall, though, you'd have to say his defense was at worst adequate as a collegiate guard. You can't say anything remotely like that for Jimmer, whose defense was execrable. It's one thing to "lay off the intensity;" it's another entirely to essentially snooze around the center circle.

I agree on Diebler. My point on that score was that his role on the team didn't ask for him to ease up on defense, so lack of effort wasn't an issue. For Fredette, I think you're exaggerating when you describe his typical defense as "snooz[ing] around the center circle". From my perspective, he generally got back and got into position, and defended with less than maximum intensity. And from my view, less-than-maximum-defensive-intensity wasn't necessarily the wrong approach in his case.

JJ Reddick has actually become a decent defender in the NBA after having the label as a turn-style. I think Diebler will be able to hold his own just based on gritty and smart defense.

I can see Diebler having about the same career path as Reddick who has become a key fixture to the Magic.

Ohio State Buckeyes? Jon Diebler: The Next Kyle Korver?
May 29, 2011 By jeffbeck

Say the name threebler in Ohio and just about anyone would point you to Jon Diebler. The former Ohio State guard holds a plethora of Buckeyes? 3-pt scoring records including the all-time OSU record for 3-pointers made and the single season record for baskets from behind the arc.

Diebler made his presence known from downtown outside of Buckeye Nation as well. His 374 career 3-pointers place him at No. 17 on the NCAA?s list of the most prolific 3-pt shooters in history. His 41.5 career 3-point percentage was good enough for 10th on the list.

The guard was a last minute invite to the NBA combine in Chicago where The Sports Bank caught up with him to discuss his future in the league. Diebler said he?s been training for NBA team workouts at Impact Basketball in Las Vegas, which he believes was a good litmus test for the combine.

?It definitely got me prepared, said Diebler. ?A lot of things that we did in the individual workouts, we also did here today. The strength and conditioning was very helpful and that?s obviously important at the next level.?

Diebler hopes reliable jumper lands him in NBA
Sam Amico
June 2, 2011

Jon Diebler is a specialist and that might be good enough. At least, it might be when it comes to realizing his NBA dreams.

"With my ability to shoot the basketball, I could help," Diebler said following a workout with the Indiana Pacers. "There's always room for a shooter on a team."

Diebler is 6-foot-6 guard who possesses a sweet perimeter stroke, excellent form and an underrated ability to free himself for shots. He was never considered much of an NBA prospect until his senior season at Ohio State -- when he hit just better than 50 percent on 3-pointers.

It's true that Diebler only averaged 12.6 points per game -- but remember, the Buckeyes had two clear-cut pro prospects in big man Jared Sullinger and guard David Lighty. Sullinger would have been a lottery pick had he not opted to stay in school.

So it's not like Diebler was ever counted on to carry the load. He was there to bury jumpers, and he did. A few times, it saved his team.

"Being at Ohio State definitely helped me, because that's my job," he said of being the so-called Designated Shooter. "That's my role and that's what I can bring to a team. I'm not going to try to do anything that I'm not used to doing. I'm going to try to play to my abilities."

Today, Diebler is making the rounds in the pre-draft workout circuit, hoping it will help his name get called on June 23. He'll next visit the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday, with more workouts to certainly follow.

It should be noted that Diebler is considered a late second-round pick at best -- simply because he's viewed as somewhat of a one-trick pony. Interestingly, he's OK with that. And it might even help his cause. After all, NBA teams love the idea of guys who can come off the bench to provide one skill. Whether it's defense, rebounding or perimeter shooting doesn't always matter.

"I was talking with one of the (Pacers) coaches during the workout, and he told me, 'Do what you do best,'" Diebler said. "I know what my strengths are. Yes, I need to prove that I can do things off the dribble. But when it comes down to it, I'm a shooter and I'm going to shoot the basketball when I'm open."

I feel like I called this... Might have been the Cavs thread.

EDIT: Yep

I hear you, I just feel he (Diebler) can absolutely thrive in a Byron Scott type offense once the Cavaliers get their PG. Best comparison I could make to the role he would play would be Kyle Korver for the Bulls right now, and IIRC he won a title with the Heat in '05 or '06?

I think Jonny D could be a better NBA player than Reddick. Diebler is bigger than Reddick, he arguably is a better shooter, he has a higher basketball IQ

NBA notebook: Diebler gives Blazers best shot
Sam Amico
June 7, 2011

Jon Diebler is continuing to use individual workouts to climb his way into the NBA draft. The latest stop came in Portland on Monday, and word is the former Ohio State guard gave a strong showing.

Most draft projections say Diebler won?t be selected. But it?s starting to sound like teams in desperate need of a shooter might take a flyer on him late in the second round.

Among the impressed: Trail Blazers interim general manager Chad Buchanan, who oversaw the workout.

"Fantastic catch-and-shoot guy. He's done it his whole life,? Buchanan said. ?He shoots 50 percent from the three this year and three-fourths of his shots were 3-pointers. So that's really an unbelievable stat. Not many guys do that.?

Diebler is 6-foot-6 and was coached by his father at Upper Sandusky High School. NBA types seem to appreciate the fact he isn?t trying to do too much. Rather, he is merely displaying better-than-expected ball-handling skills and, of course, an ability to get open and knock down shots.

?He's a guy who understands what he does as a player,? Buchanan said. ?He sticks to it, stays in his lane and when he's making shots, he's a presence out there. You always have to be aware of where he's at. And he shot it fantastic (Monday).?

Diebler averaged 12.5 points per game for the Buckeyes this past season. He has also worked out for Indiana.
