SG Jon Diebler (2nd-Most Big Ten career 3-Pointers, Butler Recruiting Director)

Diebler looks good to Nets

Ohio State's Jon Diebler was back in the state where his college career ended. Rhode Island's Delroy James admitted being nervous as he played in front of his all-time idol. College of Charleston's Andrew Goudelock felt he could have shown a lot more.

But all three seniors impressed in what many NBA types described as an overall lacking NBA draft combine yesterday at the Nets' practice facility in East Rutherford.

Diebler is a guy the Nets, who draft 27th and 36th, wanted to see. The 6-foot-6 shooting guard set the Big Ten career record for 3-pointers with 374 in his four-season Ohio State career that ended with an upset loss to Kentucky in the NCAA East Regional.

"I told my driver coming over, 'This is where my college career ended.' It was kind of bittersweet, but I'm just excited I was invited," said Diebler, who shot .502 on 3's as a senior but was disappointed in his combine shooting -- though he was looking to show other wares.

"I didn't shoot as well as I wanted, but it happens," he said. "I wanted to show that I can hold my own on defense. That's one of the bigger questions, if I can guard at the next level. That's something I really focus on."

But the shooting stands out.

"He's definitely got a shooter's touch," said one Western Conference exec.

Jon Diebler's Range ? During shooting drills, some of the prospects clearly struggled as they tried to adjust to the NBA three-point line. Diebler, on the other hand, often completed the drills five steps back from the line. At times, he was closer to halfcourt than he was the three-point line, but he was still unconscious, proving that range clearly isn't an issue for him. He would have made Jimmer Fredette proud with some of the shots he was making.

like the article said before it, i'm sure his defense is going to be the only thing scouts wonder about. That being said, from what I saw this season, he's head and shoulders about Jimmer in that regard. If the Nets get him with their second pick in the 30's, that would be a HUGE steal IMO.

Meet Jon Diebler: If you are a fan of Ohio State or a big time College basketball fan, the name Jon Diebler is all too familiar. He was an unconscious 50.2% from three-point range at Ohio State this season, thats second best in the nation. Diebler knocked in 114 threes on the season, which is good enough for fourth best in the nation. To say Jon Diebler can shoot the basketball is a massive understatement.

Diebler is training for the NBA Draft at Impact Basketball in Las Vegas and hopes to prove to NBA teams that while he can still shoot the ball in a lights out fashion, that there is a little more to his game than just spotting up on the wing.

Diebler's athletic game is not going to win him a lot of awards, but an NBA team sitting on a draft pick in the late forties, early fifties could do a lot worse than a kid that works as hard as Diebler, loves to be coached and can shoot the lights out from almost half court.

NBA: Buckeyes to try to boost draft stock
Lighty, Diebler will perform in combine this week
Wednesday, May 18, 2011
By Bob Baptist
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

David Lighty said it's too soon to tell what kind of role NBA teams might see him filling in the league.

It's not too early for Jon Diebler to know his, though.

"The league is 90 percent role players," Diebler said. "You've got to do one thing extremely well, and I think my ability to shoot the basketball is one thing that is definitely attracting teams."

Diebler and Lighty, mainstays on Ohio State teams that won 109 games in the past four seasons, will be among the attractions today when the five-day NBA draft combine begins in Chicago.

It will be the first chance for them to sell themselves to teams that will draft 60 players over two rounds on June 23. Lighty has been projected as a mid-second-round pick. Diebler might go in the second round, or not at all.

Ohio State's Jon Diebler happy to be at Combine, eager to show off his shooting prowess: NBA Draft Insider

Jon Diebler, the leading 3-point shooter in Big Ten history, says he likes his chances in a shooting contest against anyone at the NBA Draft Combine.

CHICAGO ? Ohio State's Jon Diebler was taking a nap on Monday when his agent called and told him he had been invited to take part in the NBA Combine here. He wasn't on the original list distributed by the NBA, but he was happy to be added.

"Some people were dropping out," he said. "Guys who were supposed to be here didn't show up. They said I was close to getting in and to be ready in case I get a call. Fortunately, I got a call and here I am."

Most of the questions here on Thursday centered on his shoulder.

"I partially separated my AC [acromioclavicular joint] the last game against Kentucky in the first half," he said Thursday. "Took a couple weeks off rehabbing that and getting that healthy, so I'm good now. It's 100 percent now."

Diebler's strength, obviously, is his shooting, and he will take his chances against anybody here in that department, including BYU's Jimmer Fredette.

"I believe I definitely can shoot it with the best of them," Diebler said.

He was asked how he compared to Fredette.

"It's a little different," Diebler said. "Jimmer did so much for his team. Everyone knows he can shoot the ball. His was more off the bounce and mine was more catch and shoot, so there's definitely some differences, but he can definitely shoot the ball as everyone knows."

So who wins a shootout between the two?

"I'm very confident in my ability to shoot the basketball," Diebler said.

Late invitation

Former Ohio State guard Jon Diebler was napping at home Monday night when his agent called and told him to pack his things. He had just received a late invitation to the combine.

Diebler just missed the cut of the first round, but when a couple of prospects backed out, it opened a spot for him. Now he has two days to prove he belongs in the NBA.

Diebler called himself the best pure shooter in this draft, even better than BYU's Jimmer Fredette, and believes there is a role for him in this league even if he isn't drafted.

''Ninety percent of the league is role players,'' Diebler said. ''I feel like there's always room for a shooter, just because of what they bring to the floor. Not just shooting the basketball, but drawing the attention of the defense, spacing the floor, creating lanes for other people. I know what my role would be. I feel like it definitely gives me an advantage.''

Several players stayed longer than the required 15 minutes, but nobody was more gracious with their time than former Ohio State sharpshooter Jon Diebler. Despite being a late replacement here in Chicago he's making sure to make the most of this opportunity.

Diebler, Lighty showcase skills at NBA Combine, prepare for draft
By Matt Edwards

Ohio State coach Thad Matta embraces fifth-year senior forward David Lighty as he checks out of the final home game of his carrer against the Badgers on March 6. The Buckeyes won, 93-65.

As the Ohio State basketball team prepares for life without Jon Diebler and David Lighty, they are both are preparing for success at the next level.

Both players competed at the NBA Combine, which was broadcast live on ESPN U, Thursday in Chicago.

ESPN draft analyst Chad Ford said it's possible both Buckeyes will be selected in the second round of the NBA draft but he also sees situations in which neither player will be selected.

The NBA draft consists of only two rounds.

One thing Ford was certain of was which draft hopeful has the best shooting ability.

"When you watch Jon Diebler, his misses look good. ? I do think he's the best shooter in this draft," Ford said on the ESPN U broadcast. "You need shooters; you've got to spread the floor in the NBA."

Ford compared Diebler to Chicago Bulls guard Kyle Korver, who led the NBA this season in 3-point shots made during the fourth quarter.
