SG Daequan Cook (Ironi Hai Motors Nes-Ziona - Israel)

Gets an extension.....relaxes and then........

Luke Warm :
- In the practice before the Suns game, the Heat coaching staff pulled aside second year man Daequan Cook, who had been struggling of late, and explained to him that his spot on this rotation was "not secure." Cook responded by exploding for 15 points off the bench against the Suns and being a key piece in the win against the Warriors. Cook seems to have gained the role as the bail out plan, when Wade is in trouble and the clock is near 0, Cook always seems to come through and hit a crucial momentum shifting three pointer.

HEAT DAEQUAN COOK

Miami Heat's Daequan Cook widens his role

Guard Daequan Cook has emerged as one of the Heat's best options off the bench on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.

Dwyane Wade jokingly asked guard Daequan Cook recently what the heck he was thinking when he decided to enter the NBA Draft after his freshman season at Ohio State.
Wade pointed out to Cook that at Marquette he averaged almost 20 points a game before jumping to the NBA. Cook averaged 9.8 points a game for the Buckeyes. But now the two joke about it because Cook is growing into a solid role player for the Heat.
''You can see the kid has talent, and now he's out there showing it,'' Wade said.
Cook has scored in double figures in four of the past five games, and his performance is not going unnoticed by the Heat. Cook, 21, in his second season, has emerged as arguably the Heat's best option off the bench besides rookie forward Michael Beasley.
He is averaging 9.1 points, and shooting nearly 40 percent from three-point range, entering Tuesday's game against Golden State. Cook had a season-high 17 points (on 4-of-5 shooting beyond the arc) in Saturday's win at New Jersey. He had 14 points in Friday's victory over the Lakers and in the past three games averaged 14.7 points and is 12 of 16 from three-point range.
But that only tells part of the story.

Heat's Daequan Cook learning how to be good player

By CHRIS PERKINS
Palm Beach Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, December 24, 2008
MIAMI ? Last season Daequan Cook rarely saw a shot he didn't like. Then a 19-year-old rookie guard from Ohio State, he fired up shots just as freely from 20 feet as he did from 30 feet.
That's not the case this season. Cook, now a second-year pro, is showing discretion and wisdom.
"He's seeing different layers to the game," coach Erik Spoelstra said.
And the Heat (15-12) is reaping the rewards. Cook, who averages a modest 9.5 points per game, ranks 30th in the league in three-point field goal percentage (41.3). And he's climbing the list rapidly. In his past four games he's 17-for-33 (51.5) on three-point shots. And his 59 three-pointers made is tied for 10th in the NBA.
Cook, who has made at least four three-pointers in his past four games, has established season highs in scoring the past two games, going for 17 points against New Jersey on Saturday and 20 against Golden State on Monday. He had a 12-point second quarter in the 106-103 victory at New Jersey and a 15-point second quarter in the 96-88 victory against Golden State.
Even more promising for the Heat, however, was Cook's conversation with fellow Heat guard Dwyane Wade during the Golden State game. Cook told Wade, who is constantly double- and triple-teamed, he could drive to the basket in his direction and get 1-on-1 coverage.
That was encouraging on a couple of levels. It was a sign Cook is getting respect for his three-point shooting. Opponents don't want to leave Cook alone.
"I could hear the coach down at the other end of the bench yelling, 'Don't leave Cook,' '' he recalled.
But it also showed Cook is thinking about more than himself. He noticed his success was giving Wade an easier way to score.
"Now he's understanding the game," Wade said.

Miami Heat's Daequan Cook plays key role in victory
Miami guard Daequan Cook's clutch three-pointers and Dwyane Wade's 28 points powered the Heat past visiting Chicago.

Ten months ago, Daequan Cook was barely clinging to his role in the NBA as a reserve guard for the Heat.

After struggling with his confidence and jump shot through the first three months of his rookie season, Cook was sent to the NBA Development League to play for the Iowa Energy.

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra reflected on those days for Cook before Friday's 90-77 victory against Chicago at AmericanAirlines Arena.

''Certainly, what Daequan has been able to do the past week or so -- would we have been able to predict that [last] March?'' Spoelstra asked rhetorically. ``Probably not.''

Cook is facing fewer questions regarding his role and confidence these days. The second-year sharpshooter made three clutch three-pointers in the fourth quarter to help the Heat (16-12) pull away and match the team's longest victory streak of the season at four games.

Fueled by Cook's shooting, Dwyane Wade's all-around play and suffocating defense down the stretch, Miami surpassed last season's win total, when it finished 15-67 for the worst record in the league and tied for the worst mark in team history.

Cook scored nine of his 12 points in the fourth quarter, when Miami outscored Chicago 26-13 over the final 12 minutes. Wade had a game-high 28 points, but contributions came from everywhere.

Udonis Haslem matched his season high with 14 rebounds, Shawn Marion added 10 rebounds, rookie Michael Beasley had 14 points and second-year center Joel Anthony blocked four shots.

The Bulls (13-16) missed 10 of their final 12 shots, shot 36.9 percent from the field and were held to their second-fewest points this year.

''Coach [Spoelstra] emphasized at the half that our shots weren't falling, but if we keep defending, the shots are going to fall,'' said Cook, who has made at least four three-pointers in five consecutive games. ``I was in the zone. That's how it's been the last five or six games.''

Saw the part of the game where Cook went off yesterday from long-range and his three-point shot is just sweet. Nothing but net. I guess he made the right decision after all.

Man, would've been nice to have him in the scarlet and gray for a little longer...

I think he made the right decision, he just made it one year too early.

Miami Heat survives Dwyane Wade's off-night to beat Bucks
On an off night for Dwyane Wade, the Heat got help from Daequan Cook, who scored a career-high 24 points as Miami won its second in a row.

MILWAUKEE -- All season, the Heat has proved it can win when Dwyane Wade carries the load.

On Wednesday, the Heat proved it could thrive even Wade struggles offensively.

Daequan Cook made sure of it. The second-year guard scored a career-high 24 points, burying 6 of 8 three-point attempts.

''I knew,'' Cook said, ``it was going to be a long night for the opponent.''

Cook helped propel the Heat to a 102-99 victory against the Milwaukee Bucks. The Heat won its second consecutive game and improved to 3-2 on a season-long seven-game trip.

Cook scored 15 points in his first seven minutes off the bench, and finished 6 of 6 from beyond the arc in the first half.

His performance came a night after teammates ribbed him following a scoreless night on 0-for-3 shooting against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

''Were you even at the game?'' Cook recalled his teammates teasing.

He made his presence felt against the Bucks. And there was no question the Heat needed a spark.

COOKING IT UP

But this night belonged to Cook and the Heat finding a way to hold off Milwaukee's late run without relying on Wade's offensive heroics at the end of the game.

''We are starting to smell when it's winning time and our defensive intensity starts to pick up,'' Spoelstra said.

The Bucks pulled to within two points with 1:26 left, but Shawn Marion blocked Richard Jefferson's shot with 21.3 seconds remaining.

Milwaukee guard Luke Ridnour pulled the Bucks to 100-99 with 9.8 seconds remaining, but Cook drew a foul on rookie Luc Richard Mbah a Moute and hit two free throws to give the Heat its final score.

Down the stretch, the Heat was resilient.

''That's what it's all about,'' Wade said, ``finding another way.''
