SF William Buford - 4 BTT Title Games, most Buckeye starts (Virtus Roma - Italy)

Canton

TWO OF THE BEST McKinley faces two dangerous scorers this weekend - Lake senior guard Eric Coblentz and Libbey junior guard-forward William Buford. Coblentz averages 22.9 points, dropped 35 on GlenOak and is capable of that type of night on anyone. "He can create his own shot off the dribble and they do a lot of stuff to free him up," Malone said. "If he gets going, it snowballs." The 6-foot-5 Buford has verbally committed to Ohio State. He averages 25.8 points and 12 rebounds a game. He scored 50 points in two games during last season's McKinley Classic. In Libbey's first loss Monday, against defending Michigan big-school state champ Saginaw Arthur Hill, Buford had 33 points and nine rebounds. "He's got the ability to take you off the dribble, hit the 3, and he's long and athletic so he can set other players up and go to the glass and get putbacks," Malone said.

Bank on Buford
Libbey junior scores 33 as Cowboys rally to beat Scott

On all counts, last night's City League basketball showdown between rivals Libbey and Scott met and even exceeded the pregame hype.

When the tension-packed final seconds ticked away, the fifth-ranked Cowboys had rallied to pull out a thrilling 76-73 victory over sixth-ranked and previously unbeaten Scott before a crowd estimated at 8,300 at Savage Hall.

Libbey junior William Buford, the 6-5 future Ohio State Buckeye, shined the brightest in his team's win, scoring 33 points, grabbing 16 rebounds and delivering the game's decisive blows at the end.

Wow. Scoring 33 against the Michigan state champs, 31 against McKinley, and 33 and 16 rebounds in a huge rivalry game against undefeated Scott...maybe Buford really is just as huge a prospect as Roe. I hadn't thought of him in that stratosphere before, but those numbers are big-time against big-time opponents. I haven't seen any footage of him, I don't think...so this is one I'll be eager to see in action.

He seemed like a very good recruit as a sophomore, but it's pretty clear that he is special...at least his production and size seem comparable to Cook.

Had a friend take in the game last night. He said Buford could be scoring 50 a night if he weren't on such a talented team. He also raved about how unselfish he is. He also said he is an above average passer and doesn't force the action.
