SF William Buford - 4 BTT Title Games, most Buckeye starts (Virtus Roma - Italy)

Just needs to stop forcing shots. A lot of his makes were in the flow of the game... and a lot of his misses was due to him trying to do too much. One of the other guards is going to have to develop a 3 point shot to take some of the pressure off him. That will help open the floor and let him get back to his game.

I don't agree. He seems to be pulling the string on his shots lately instead of just shooting the ball. Once he stops short arming the floater and following through like normal shots will begin to fall again.

Let's not forget that he hurt his shoulder in December and his shooting slump started shortly after that injury. He just might be playing hurt.

This, this, 1,000,000 x this. I've really noticed it the past few games on his 15-18 ft. jumpers that he's been missing.

Looked a lot better against Indy. He was driving to the basket and making open jumpers. He is also starting to see that inside pass a little better when he's moving into the lane under control.

Nonetheless, there's not a better college basketball player taking one bounce left and rising into a jump shot. Probably not many better in the pro's either.

Matta weighs in on Buford

A caller to coach Thad Matta's weekly show on WBNS radio Monday night questioned William Buford's decision-making in recent games and asked Matta if the senior is ever going to get "some redirection" on the bench of if he's an "untouchable."

Matta's first response was, "I've got great trust in him," and that with him being the only senior on the roster, "a lot of times you go into battles with the guys that have been in them before."

But Matta also acknowledged the obvious, which is that aspects of Buford's game have not been satisfactory the past few weeks, as his statistics show.

"We?ve got to get some things shored up with him, because we do want the ball in his hands and we do want him making better decisions," Matta said.

Ohio State men's basketball: Buford determined to improve
By Bob Baptist
The Columbus Dispatch Saturday January 21, 2012

Inconsistency might have been expected from a lineup that includes 11 freshmen and sophomores.

That the only senior on the Ohio State men?s basketball team would be caught up in it, too, was not.

But that has been the inexplicable theme of William Buford?s final Big Ten season, one of the mysteries to ponder as the sixth-ranked Buckeyes have joined the teams that were supposed to be looking up at them by now in a rollicking start to the conference season.

Ohio State (16-3, 4-2) is one of five teams with two losses. A victory at Nebraska (10-8, 2-5) tonight would, somehow, regain a share of first place in the standings only seven games in.

?We have something to prove on the road,? Buford said yesterday before the team left for Lincoln, Neb.?All our losses have been on the road, and we know when we had those losses, it was because ? we weren?t playing great defense. When we play great defense, it leads to great offense. We just need to always be tuned in on the defensive end.?

One-on-One: Ohio State?s William Buford Q&A

Written by Tom Dienhart, BTN.com Senior Writer
posted on
1/20/12

Expectations are big at Ohio State. And William Buford and the Buckeyes aren?t running away from them. It?s Final Four or bust for the Buckeyes. Why not? This team is loaded with talent, including Jared Sullinger, Aaron Craft, Deshaun Thomas, among others.

And then there?s Buford, the lone senior on the squad. The 6-6 guard is the one teammates look to for leadership with players like Dallas Lauderdale, Jon Diebler and David Lighty gone from last year?s team that entered the NCAA tourney as the No. 1 overall seed. Alas, the season ended with a loss to Kentucky in the Sweet 16.

With a 16-3 overall mark and 4-2 Big Ten slate, Ohio State is steamrolling toward another big season and likely lofty seed in the Big Dance. And Buford is a big reason why. He?s averaging 15.2 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.5 assists for a team that lost at Kansas by a point with Sullinger out of the lineup; at Indiana by four points; at Illinois by five points.

Buford is looking to fight out of a funk that has seen him hit just 24-of-62 shots (38.7 percent) over the past five games and get to the free-throw line just five times en route to averaging 9.2 points. Coincidentally, in that span, Ohio State is 3-2.
BTN.com caught up with Buford as he and Buckeyes prepared for a trip to Nebraska on January 21.

Q: You are the team?s lone senior. What?s that like?
A: It has been pretty decent. We had our ups and downs. Hopefully we are done with the downs. We are just trying to continue to get better every day and be better than we were yesterday.

Q: Do the young guys look to you for advice?
A: Yes, sometimes. I?ve been here a while and been through probably all they have been through. I?m just trying to help them the best I can on and off the court.

Just a little disappointing to hear that type of comment out of Will.

He says he'll fix it.

Buckeyes will certainly need that to happen.
I don't know. I am sure that he is disappointed with his own play. Perhaps, he didn't know what else to say but I totally agree with you that we certainly need him to get out of his funk.
