SF William Buford - 4 BTT Title Games, most Buckeye starts (Virtus Roma - Italy)

congrats to william for making the 1000-point club.

i just noticed, though, that buford has attempted only 7 free throws. his free throw percentage (not free throw shooting percentage) has plummeted from 26.1% last season to 7% this season. this is surprising because he has exerted himself across the board. his rebounding, assist, and steal percentages have increased. lighty needs a fellow attacker. we should not have only one.

perhaps buford hasn't been penetrating as much because of his back, which is getting better. this is just a thought.

what is free throw percentage. Free Throw Attempts / Field Goal Attempts? Never heard of this stat...but I think I like it.

Explanation by WB regarding his shooting. I guess his old man must have given him hell when he went home Friday night:)

By Bob Baptist
The Columbus Dispatch
Christmas break lasted a matter of hours, not days, for William Buford.
"I left (for home) Friday evening," the junior from Toledo said. "I came back Saturday morning."

Only time will tell whether he returned with the gift he cherishes most - his jump shot.

"I'm just going to stay in the gym and keep working on it," he said yesterday as Ohio State prepared for its final nonconference game, tonight against Tennessee-Martin in Value City Arena.

Time in the gym was the reason Buford didn't linger longer at home for the holiday.

The Big Ten season starts Friday night at Indiana. The No.2-ranked Buckeyes would like to have all their guns blazing out of the gate.

Buford, the team's second-leading scorer behind Evan Turner last season with a 14.4-point average, is the only one of the team's top five scorers this season to not yet have a 20-point game. He is averaging 12.5 points despite having more field-goal attempts than any other player.

He is helping the Buckeyes in other ways: on defense and by making nearly four assists per game and turning the ball over at half that rate. He is developing into a more well-rounded player in a balanced offense that is taking up Turner's slack by committee.

But Buford's calling card is his silky-smooth jump shot that barely moves the net when he is stroking it purely. He hasn't dialed that up nearly enough so far to suit himself or his father, William Sr., who taught him how to shoot.

"He's been rippin' it to me," the younger William said.

Coach Thad Matta said the reason William Buford played sparingly down the stretch, and only 26 minutes in the game, was because of an injured ankle -- not to mention Deshaun Thomas kind of stepped up, huh?

I'm not sure whether Buford was injured during or before the game, but he was wincing when he came out of the game with 10:33 to play. He came back in for the final 49 seconds _ Matta asked him if he was OK before inserting him -- and made the clinching free throws with 3.5 seconds left.

I sure as hell was confused why WB did not play the almost the entire second half and I would like to thank the very poor announcers for pointing that out. It's not like Thomas did not fill in big-time but WB is one guy I don't like to see sitting on the bench.

I was a little late with my info:) and thank goodness for that. I am sure that Thomas could play against Purdue but not for the entire 40 minutes.

Coach Thad Matta said during the Big Ten coaches' teleconference this morning that William Buford twisted an ankle during the game at Illinois on Saturday but that an X-ray after the team returned to Columbus showed "no signs of anything."

"It swelled up a little bit on the way home, but nothing major," Matta said. "He was moving well (in practice Sunday) and expect him to be full-go today as well as tomorrow."

Buford missed most of the last 10 minutes at Illinois, and Matta asked him if he was OK before re-inserting him in the lineup with 52.2 seconds left. Illinois fouled him with 3.5 seconds left and trailing by three points, and Buford made both free throws to seal the victory for Ohio State.

Props to WB for getting the ball rolling in a big game. When his shot is on, it's one of the best I've seen. I still think he can be an 18-20 ppg guy. He deserves some credit for running the point to start games, he's handled that responsibility very well.

With any less deep and explosive a lineup, I think Will would certainly be a 20ppg player. More than that though, he has professional calibur written all over him. Pro scouts have to admire how smooth he is into and out of his jumpshot whether he's balanced, driving, offbalanced, from whichever point on the court.

Now, just to keep those NBA guys off his back for one more season

Matta said Monday morning that he expected Buford, who sprained his ankle at Illinois, to be "full go" for practice Monday and for the game. But he said after the game that as late as yesterday morning, he wasn't sure if Buford was going to play.

"I texted him late (Monday) night and said, 'Shoot me straight, how do you feel?? And he said, 'I?m a little sore . . . ,? Matta said.

"I told him today, 'You don?t dot-dot-dot me.' So we had a long conversation as he tried to explain what dot-dot-dot means.

"As I came in this morning, we didn?t know if he was going to play tonight. But then at shootaround he was fine, and he really got us off to a good start by taking and making good shots. That was big for us."

Buford made two of his five three-point field goals in the first two minutes of the game to help Ohio State get out to a 6-2 lead. Purdue never led in the game.

Buford finished 6 of 8 from the field, including 5 of 6 on three-pointers.
