SF Sam Thompson (JB Monferrato - Italy)

Matta said going into the summer recruiting period that he was looking for a big man and a big wing to complement Scott, who committed last year. When Ross unexpectedly committed Aug. 16, "I was a little bit discouraged," Thompson said, because he thought his scholarship offer would be taken off the table. "But I got to talk to coach Matta after that and he thought I would still fit in well. If we?re still going to continue to fight for the Big Ten championship and a national championship, we?re going to need a lot of good players.

"I've been texting with Evan the last week, just talking about the transition from Illinois high school basketball to Ohio State," Thompson said. "Evan has been a good reference point for me. "I really loved the Ohio State coaching staff as a whole and really like the way they do things. Their wings have had a tremendous amount of success with coach Matta, and I think I will fit well in that system."

Welcome to the Buckeye Family, Sam!!

This is a BIG time committment. To grab a top flight PG and two very talented, long-limbed, Evan Turner-like wings in Ross and Thompson... wow. And we're not done yet in this class.

LOVE Sam's committment to doing the little things on the floor, his desire to be a really good defensive player, and his work in the classroom (29 ACT score). Really well-rounded, intelligent kid. Can't have enough of those on your team.

Long live The Thad.

Agree 100%! I really like how Matta is filling his team with many guys who have such good intangibles (i.e., grades, intelligence, good family, team-first attitude & approach to the game). I think that's the one aspect of Matta's recruiting that people continually underestimate, as he gets high character kids who represent the university well.
