SF Sam Thompson (JB Monferrato - Italy)

Sam Thompson, SF, Mac Irvin Fire- There have been times when Thompson's production hasn't always matched his reputation. Monday, the fluid and athletic 6-foot-6 wing was outstanding during a win over Athlete's First. After playing the role of set-up man during the first half, he got aggressive offensively in the second. He hit on several mid-range jumpers and made a mockery of a would be defender on a fastbreak slam. Ohio State, Florida and Oregon State look to be the top tier while Georgetown and Kansas round out his top five.

Sam Thompson, 2011, SF, 6?6, 210lbs, Whitney Young (IL), Mac Irvin Fire-

Blackshear was the best player for the Windy City squad, but Thompson was not far behind. A big-time athlete, Thompson showed that he is more than a high riser, knocking down a number of jumpers, especially late in the game when his team pulled away. Thompson had 15 points (6/11 FG, 1/4 3P, 2/4 FT), 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block, 1 steal, and 2 turnovers. Thompson has a high ceiling and has a chance to develop into a big-time player.

Offers: Ohio State, Florida, and Oregon State
Favorites: Ohio State, Florida, and Oregon State
Notes- Thompson said that Georgetown and Kansas entered the picture later than the other three did. ?Hopefully by the early signing period, so I can have a worry free high school season,? Thompson said.

Thompson Aims Higher, Considers OSU

August 12, 2010
Perhaps the best attribute about elite recruit Sam Thompson, even with all his natural smarts and ability on the basketball court, is that he?s always striving to better himself.

Ask Thompson about his game and he?ll tell you he has a long way to go. Remind him that he scored a 29 on his ACT and he?ll tell you he could have recorded a higher score.

A 6-7, 200-pounder from Chicago Whitney Young, Thompson is one of the top wing forwards in the 2011 class, which is why he was invited to play in two elite Nike events in Ohio ? the LeBron James Skills Academy in Akron and the King City Classic in Cleveland ? at the outset of the July evaluation period.

Ohio State head coach Thad Matta may have been as happy as anyone about that considering he has offered Thompson a scholarship and the senior-to-be claims OSU is at the top of his short list. The Buckeyes are trying to hold off Oregon State and Florida.

?Those are still my top three,? said Thompson, who is considered the third-best prospect in Illinois according to ChicagoHoops.com. ?Those are the guys who have been in there with me the whole time and I feel comfortable with those guys. I?m going to see where it goes.?

Thompson planning weekend visit

Sam Thompson, a 6-foot-6 senior guard from Chicago, told The Recruit Scoop yesterday that he will make his official visit to Ohio State this weekend. So the commitment the Buckeyes received recently from wing LaQuinton Ross apparently has not lessened either Thompson's interest in them nor theirs in him (or he's just taking advantage of the free tickets and all-expenses paid trip to what should be a great football game).

Thompson told the recruiting site that he also has scheduled official visits to Georgetown on Sept. 18, Oregon State on Oct. 2 and Florida on Oct. 9.

According to a tweet from Jeff Bozrello of NBEBasketball.com Sam Thompson (Mac Irvin Fire, Chicago, IL) has informed him that Thompson is now down to Ohio State and Florida. He also stated that Thompson is no longer considering Oregon State. Thompson recently took a trip an official visit to Ohio State and plans on taking a visit to Florida on Oct 9.

Here goes an scouting evaluation from espn.com on Thompson

Strengths:
Thompson is a long lean versatile player. He has the talent and skill to play all three perimeter positions and be productive. He can score on the break by running the floor or rebounding and leading the break where he can get to the rim or draw and kick to an open teammate. In the half court Thompson can make plays off the dribble with his excellent ball handling and passing ability. He can also hit the open mid range jumper off the catch or dribble. Thompson has a good feel for the game and is a capable multiple position defender. He is a good shot blocker for a wing player as well.

Weaknesses:
Thompson must improve his strength in order to be a better finisher when contact is involved. He also needs to work to become a better three point shooter. His shot preparation needs attention. At times Thompson will disappear during games especially when he is playing off the ball. His effort and energy is very inconsistent which takes away from his overall production in areas of his game that he has the talent to be very productive.

Bottom Line:
Thompson has the size, talent and skill to be productive in every game he plays. He can make plays off the dribble and his overall versatility makes him special. Added strength, consistent effort and an improved jumper take this young talented players game to the next level.

Like what I am hearing from the above article posted. I think he would be a nice get and his weaknesses are not that glaring and could be easily be taking care of by the Ohio State coaching staff and strength coach:)

Sam Thompson a Buckeye
By Joe Henricksen
on September 19, 2010

Whitney Young star Sam Thompson ended his recruitment Sunday with a verbal commitment to coach Thad Matta and Ohio State. Thompson, among the top prospects in a loaded Class of 2011 and a national recruit over the past two years, chose the Buckeyes over the likes of Florida and Oregon State in the end, along with a long list of initial high-major suitors.

"I have always liked Ohio State," said Thompson, who first visited the Columbus campus last October on an unofficial visit and officially visited last weekend. "I knew going into my official visit that Ohio State was my favorite. The official visit confirmed it for me after sitting down with coach Matta and seeing how I fit in and the direction they are heading. I watched them all this past season and I am just a fan of the way coach Matta's teams play. I'm really excited."

Over the past two years the Hoops Report has often compared Thompson to former UNLV and NBA player Stacey Augmon, due to his versatility and the potential to be an impact, difference-making player on the defensive end. The 6-6 Thompson is a superior athlete, with long arms, wiry frame, great bounce and explosiveness off the floor. He can be a stat sheet filler with steals, blocks, points and rebounds. As his perimeter skills progress, which has included an improved perimeter jumper, Thompson will become the prototypical small forward that could set him apart from other true wings.

Thompson has battled some injuries over the past year, including missing a portion of the second half of last season. Prior to the injury, Thompson played perhaps his best basketball at the Proviso West Holiday Tournament. In the championship game win over Foreman, Thompson scored a game-high 26 points and tallied 11 rebounds.

"I am so anxious to get back on the floor," said Thompson, who battled an ankle injury last winter and an injury to his quad this past summer. "The injuries have been frustrating. For the first time in a long time I am going to be completely healthy for an entire season. I am doing a lot of things to get my body ready and taking care of my body."

In two years Thompson has been part of a state championship team in 2009 and a state runner-up team last March. As a sophomore, Thompson contributed 6 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks in the state title game victory over Waukegan. A year ago in 20 games, Thompson averaged 10 points, 8.3 rebounds and over 3 assists a game for the 24-win Dolphins.

"The goal is to get back to the championship game and bring another state title to Whitney Young," said Thompson.

Ohio State can only hope it receives as much fortune in Thompson as it did the last time they plucked a player out of Illinois -- St. Joseph's Evan Turner, who was an All-American and No. 2 pick of the Philadelphia 76ers in last June's NBA Draft.

Sunday announcement during football season, so this one may slip by some guys here for a bit, but still, a HUGE GET. Congrats to Sam on joining the Buckeyes. OSU is going to be extremely athletic at the wing positions for the forseeable future.
