SF Sam Thompson (JB Monferrato - Italy)

Thompson can shoot

Ohio State?s Sam Thompson struck again twice Saturday, including a left-corner 3-pointer in the second half to break a 34-all tie.

That shot made him 9-of-13 from long distance over the past half-dozen games, after he shot just 11-of-35 in the season?s first four months.

On Friday, Thompson told Sporting News he?d been working with assistant coach Chris Jent to improve his jumpshot form. He said he?d been loose with his elbow and that was causing his shots to go offline and that Jent helped to address that flaw in his technique. Jent said that part of the transformation was accomplished long ago, and it was more a matter of Thompson beginning to feel confident in his stroke.

?He got pretty consistent with how he was shooting the basketball leading up into September,? Jent said. ?Right now, he?s looking at the rim. He?s locating his defender; he?s looking at the rim. Whereas before, he would just look at the floor. It?s going to be a progression for him, and he?s going to get better and better as he becomes more comfortable with it.?

Earlier in the season, opponents often chose not to defend Thompson along the 3-point line or to deploy his man in a constant help position.

?Obviously, if he?s a weapon out there it really spaces the floor; now his athleticism comes into play,? Jent said. ?That bump-back to the catch-and-shoot 3?any player, if you can do that on a consistent basis, that?s a serious weapon.?

Sam has a nice looking jump shot. He has been very good early in games lately shooting the ball but then he seems to disappear a bit. I'd love to see him attack a little more but overall I think he's developing really nicely and with another off season of hard work, I think Sam will be a beast with a complete game next year. :osu:

I'm 100% with you on Sam being a total beast next year. Hopefully the gained confidence in his jump shot will only add to his motivation in the off-season to keep improving.

There are so many players on this team who have great upside, and if they all put it together next year, it could be another huge year.

Does anybody remember David Thompson out of NC State in the middle 70"s?
He was an awesome leaper and bb player then. Sam kind of resembles him and i wonder if he was any realation to David Thompson.

David Thompson may be my favorite college player of all time (anybody who can injure themselves by catching their foot in the armpit of a 6' 6" forward is one hell of a leaper).

I can only think of two players with those kind of hops - Jordan and Oladipo.

Can't answer your question, although I would think it would have been mentioned by now if he were.

Thompson with 20 points and 10 boards against Iona in the NCAA first round for his first career double-double. Fine game for Sam, who is showing great improvement in his offensive game here in crunch time.

Should make a few highlights tonight and for the tournament.

With how Sam is playing I think he needs to be the next athlete in an old spice commerical.

It will consist of Craft of throwing him a lob. When Sam jumps, he just keeps going...and going and going up.

Then finally, he looks at the camera and says "You can too."
