Thompson can shoot
Ohio State?s Sam Thompson struck again twice Saturday, including a left-corner 3-pointer in the second half to break a 34-all tie.
That shot made him 9-of-13 from long distance over the past half-dozen games, after he shot just 11-of-35 in the season?s first four months.
On Friday, Thompson told Sporting News he?d been working with assistant coach Chris Jent to improve his jumpshot form. He said he?d been loose with his elbow and that was causing his shots to go offline and that Jent helped to address that flaw in his technique. Jent said that part of the transformation was accomplished long ago, and it was more a matter of Thompson beginning to feel confident in his stroke.
?He got pretty consistent with how he was shooting the basketball leading up into September,? Jent said. ?Right now, he?s looking at the rim. He?s locating his defender; he?s looking at the rim. Whereas before, he would just look at the floor. It?s going to be a progression for him, and he?s going to get better and better as he becomes more comfortable with it.?
Earlier in the season, opponents often chose not to defend Thompson along the 3-point line or to deploy his man in a constant help position.
?Obviously, if he?s a weapon out there it really spaces the floor; now his athleticism comes into play,? Jent said. ?That bump-back to the catch-and-shoot 3?any player, if you can do that on a consistent basis, that?s a serious weapon.?
