SF LaQuinton Ross (Memphis Hustle - NBA G-League)

Anyone help me out here? LaQ said 'he'd be back' at OSU next year. A) was he thinking of going pro; B) Was he thinking of transferring?
(C) Does it matter?

He'll be back; I don't give a shit what alternative(s) he considered and not sure why anyone else would care. No offense, cali, for wondering yourself, as you're certainly entitled to.

Not sure which, very much took me by surprise when he said this on print/TV.

He'll need to pick up his D to get more minutes, like DeShaun has, in order to be an NBA pick, methinks. (or even to have Matta put him on the court more). Could probably displace Lenzelle as a starter to juice up the offense (if Deshaun stays). Hope Amir continues to grow, still like Ravenal's 'head' atop Amir's talent for one complete player.

You think that a player needs to be a finished product to be an NBA pick. Nowadays, teams draft on potential, and everyone can see his potential. My #1 example is Mike Conley Jr. Everyone knew he was leaving too early, but he developed into one of the top 8 or so PGs in the league, and he got paid millions to develop. Why develop in college when you can do it in the NBA and get paid?

2012/2013 10.8ppg and 6.5rpg. $2,253,062 and you spelled his name incorrectly.

I'm no Mullens fan but what was your point?

My point was that he is a better example of someone who probably shouldn't have left but was drafted on potential and is now paying dividends. It wasn't a knock on him at all.

No offense but I don't agree with any of this.

He's a starter next year. Period. I appreciate Ravenel but he made some boneheaded plays at times. I want Ross' head on Ross' shoulders.

Ohio State's key returnee: LaQuinton Ross
May, 20, 2013

Robert Hanashiro/USA TODAY SportsOhio State's LaQuinton Ross had several big moments in the NCAA tournament, including a winning shot against Arizona.

Editor's note: This month, ESPN Insider's college basketball and recruiting experts are teaming up to examine how 15 of the nation's best recruiting classes will fit in with their teams in the 2013-14 season. The day's featured program: Ohio State Insider, which Andy Katz delves more into here. Check out the Nation blog each morning for a corresponding post on the key returnee for each of the 15 teams.

I let my enthusiasm for LaQuinton Ross' obvious natural gifts spill out onto Twitter on March 6, as Ohio State was thrillingly engaged in what would end up being its best win of the season:

Revisiting that tweet reminded me just how silly it seemed at the time, including to many Ohio State fans. Ross? A top-five pick in a loaded draft? Come on, Brennan!

I'll admit it: At the time, it was a bit silly, and not just because Ross didn't even play well at Indiana that night. To that point, Ross, though blessed with a combination of lanky size and perimeter skills, had been a maddeningly inconsistent entity. If you review his overall sophomore season, there is some to like, but still plenty to be cautious about. The 99.6 offensive rating. The 22.7 percent turnover rate. The less-than-stellar work on the boards. The tendency to drift for long stretches.

Then March happened.

3 Buckeyes going camping

Three Ohio State players will take a break from their summer routine on campus to join other top college and high school players at their position at Nike-sponsored skills academies next week.

Juniors LaQuinton Ross and Sam Thompson will be among 10 college wing forwards at the Kevin Durant camp June 28-30 in Washington. The camp also will have 25 to 30 high school wings competing.

Ross and Deshaun Thomas attended the Durant camp last summer in Chicago.

College basketball: LaQuinton Ross believes he can be the scorer Ohio State needs

COLUMBUS — Almost everybody is wondering where the points will come from for the Ohio State Buckeyes.

LaQuinton Ross — expected to fill the only opening in the returning starting lineup — isn’t wondering. He knows.

“I definitely think I’ve been waiting,” said the junior, who will take the spot vacated by Big Ten scoring leader Deshaun Thomas. “The fans have also been waiting, too, to see what I can do. They heard the buzz about me since I came out of high school. At the end of the year I gave them something to look forward to this year.”

As the Buckeyes begin practice, a lot is riding on Ross, an acclaimed prep player who saw little action as a freshman two years ago and then blossomed late last season in the biggest games.

The silky 6-foot-8 wing can shoot the three, score on an isolation play or can muscle in a shot in the paint. He averaged 8.3 points a game a year ago then had a terrific NCAA Tournament. He averaged 12 points in the first two rounds, then had 17 in the regional semifinals, including 10 in a row in the second half before the Buckeyes were upset by Wichita State.

“The types of things he did at the end of last year are things he’s going to come out of the gate with,” guard Lenzelle Smith said.

“Guys are kind of interested and excited to see what he’s going to bring to the table.”

LaQuinton Ross hit a game-winning shot against Arizona in the NCAA Tournament last season as part of a postseason run that gave a glimpse of what his coming junior season may be like.Joshua Gunter, The Plain Dealer
COLUMBUS, Ohio – LaQuinton Ross averaged 17.7 points per game and shot 50 percent from the field in Ohio State's last three games of the NCAA Tournanment last season. That's the guy coming back to the Buckeyes this season, not the guy who averaged 8.3 points for the entire season in a limited role.

Ross, a junior who averaged four minutes per game as a freshman and 17 minutes last season, can't wait to unleash the tournament version of Q (his one-letter nickname) for an entire season.

“I definitely think I've been waiting. I think the fans have been waiting, too,” Ross said Thursday as the Buckeyes held their preseason interview day in their new practice gym. “I think they've been waiting to see what I can do. There's been a buzz about me since I came out of high school, and the end of last year I gave them something to look forward to once again.”
