Ohio State spotlight: LaQuinton Ross

LaQuinton Ross is contributing with scoring and rebounding, but coach Thad Matta wants to see improvement on defense.

A year ago this weekend, LaQuinton Ross returned to the Ohio State men?s basketball team. Only now is he beginning to catch up to the reputation that preceded him.

But he said he thinks he is better for the journey.

?I?ve definitely grown as a person,? Ross said, ?because it has been humbling. Coming out of high school as one of the top recruits in your class, you get here and it really humbles you sitting on that bench, looking out there and thinking ?I could help my team? but the coaches knowing I wasn?t ready.?

The Buckeyes played 7,800 minutes last season on the way to the Final Four. Ross, ballyhooed a few years before as the best high-school freshman in the country, was on the bench for 7,765 of them. After missing all of preseason practice and the first month of the season while gaining academic eligibility, he never caught up with his teammates, and the coaches had no time to wait for him.

One year later, he still is catching up.

?In essence, Q?s a freshman,? coach Thad Matta said.

I've been impressed with Q's rebounding. He's not a block-out kind of guy; he's more the type who looks at where the ball will bounce to and glides through the junk to go up and get it. He's terrific at insinuating himself between other players, whether to get a rebound or to get a shot.

Ohio State's LaQuinton Ross stretching as a player

COLUMBUS ? Typecast as a scorer, LaQuinton Ross is showing his range ? and that?s not just on his jump shots.

The lanky 6-foot-8 sophomore is a sneaky-good rebounder on the backside, leading the Buckeyes in three consecutive games before Saturday?s 90-72 win against UNC-Asheville.

?Coming out of high school, I averaged 12 rebounds as a senior so I think I was pretty good,? he said. ?I?ve got to do it here because sometimes I?m playing the 4-man and I have to go get rebounds.?

Ross is third on the team in rebounding at 4.8 boards per game. He also has 14 offensive rebounds, something he showed no interest in doing a year ago in mop-up duty when he didn?t snare one all season.

?Rebounding is something I like to do, especially on the offensive end,? he said ?Offensive rebounds lead to points.?

So maybe his desire to rebound isn?t altruistic, but another way to steal scenes and score more. Then someone needs to explain his better-than-advertised defense through nine games.

?His defensive awareness, we?re seeing him do things he hasn?t done in the past,? Ohio State coach Thad Matta said. ?He?s talking more and seeing things and seeing help and reacting better.

?Q can definitely put the ball in the basket which is very advantageous to us.?

Were Ross the player we were all hoping to see when OSU signed him we win yesterday.

When he becomes that player, we become a much better team.

That said, it is interesting to reread the Scout profile from when he was a HS Senior.

One of the most naturally gifted players in the class, Ross has a chance to be very good down the road. He has good size for a wing and can really get hot from deep. Also his wingspan is impressive which allows him to guard inside and out. Ross hasn't yet proven that he can consistently stay healthy or play hard and that has had some question his love of the game, but the talent is definitely there.

Yup, he doesn't seem to be overly assertive at times. Plus, for some reason, he looks a little bit slow or maybe I am just imagining that but he looks like he in slow motion at times.

I think yesterday he just looked tentative...perhaps afraid of making a mistake and having to take a seat. Still think he brings a great skill set to this team but he just needs some DT like confidence out there.

i'm not sure it's much to be worried about yet. It's his second big gamehe's played in in college. He looked good against Duke not so much here.

Which is why I have a serious problem with this seasons schedule. Outside of Duke and Kansas the only team we have played in the RPI 100 is Washington - at 97. These are glorified scrimmages and I just don't get it.

The B1G will get us ready for the tourney. Just don't think we are ready for the B1G.

Well, it might not make any difference if we played a tougher schedule because he might not get anymore playing time than he currently is getting but I totally agree with you when it comes to the entire team getting ready for the B1G .

Both Q and Amir need to see serious minutes before B1G play starts up if we're going to compete. I say keep them in until they foul out from here on.

Only 1 game left until the real season gets started. I guess they could probably play the entire game against Chicago State and we do have Nebraska coming up so I guess there is a chance.

Ohio State men?s basketball: Attitude change earning Ross more minutes
By Bob Baptist

Jonathan Quilter | DISPATCH LaQuinton Ross helped in the win over Wisconsin.

The ?breaking point,? as LaQuinton Ross called it, came three weeks ago, after Ohio State?s biggest win of the season. Michigan, the school Buckeyes love to hate, arrived at Value City Arena undefeated and left with its first loss.

?Everybody out there was celebrating. We just beat the No. 2 team in the country,? Ross said. ?But inside, I think I was being kind of selfish because I was thinking, ?I didn?t get my chance.? ?

Ross, a tall and talented but enigmatic sophomore wing player, had played three minutes. For the fourth game in a row, his playing time had decreased. He had not always handled that well in the past. This time, he handled it like a man.

?I just started talking to myself,? he said, ?like, ?What do I have to do to get on the court? What do I have to do to impress the coaches? What can I do to be a better teammate?? From then on, I?ve come to practice every day and tried to listen. Listen to my teammates. Listen to my coaches.?
