SF LaQuinton Ross (Memphis Hustle - NBA G-League)

He will absolutely contribute this season (if he does come back).

He's that good.
I differ a little. The hardest thing for a freshman to learn is playing Matta's defense the way he wants it played. Ross, if he does become eligible, will have to wait until he learns how to play the type of defense that Thad demands.

I agree to an extent but if he can score and more importantly do so by creating his own shots, he will see a lot of time. Defensively we can cover up him as a weakness. My main concern is someone else scoring if Sully gets in foul trouble and Buford's shots aren't falling. This is where a pure scorer with length like Ross can be extremely effective especially if he can knock down the three.

His talent is undeniable, though, which has led to speculation that he is considering playing only one season of college.

If and when the NBA's new collective bargaining agreement is signed, it will be changing the early entry age to 20.

We don't know for sure that Ross doesn't know how to play "Matta defense."

He could be great on the defensive side of the court with his length for all we know.

The main issue according to most of the scouting services seemed to be that he would lose focus and/or not hustle all the time (same w/ Amir).

It's definitely going to be interesting to see how he meshes with the team if&when he returns.

Let me clarify...

He may contribute in spots of different games. But I don't see him getting 15-20 minutes a game consistantly after being away from the team this long.

Let's get him on campus before we declare him the next best thing at Ohio State.

The criticism of Ross has been that he is not a hard worker. There are very few players that aren't hard workers that are defensive minded on the court.

Yes we do. He doesn't.

Think Deshawn Thomas. He's a scorer and defense has been an afterthought thus far for him. He'll have to catch up on the defensive side at the next level.

Not even close to speaking the same language.

Ross & Thomas? Seriously? What, they're both black? That's where the comparison stops.

Ross IS a very good offensive player but that's not all he is. For one, he's about 2.5 inches taller than Deshaun at a similar weight and is a cat-quick perimeter player with a Deibleresque jumper.

Those 2 couldn't be more different.

Now, if you want to compare Ross to Danny Granger or Tracy McGrady, I'll listen.

Compare a kid fresh out of high school who has yet to do ANYTHING in college to two NBA All-Stars? A bit much, no?

We get it that you love his game, but you can't state with absolute certainty, which you did, that he's going to be on the court contributing anything of significance.

Every scouting report that has information on him says his areas for improvement are things that have to do with intensity and defensive effort. Let's let him work in a college system before we compare him to those guys.

I think Ross is like a poor man's Evan Turner. He does have remarkably good handles for a player of his size, so he could add some of that dribble drive element that the team may otherwise be somewhat short in outside of the PG tandem. But he could also struggle with TOs his frosh season much like ET did. Should be a good addition to the team and make the rotation if and when he is eligible.

Kind of the same things we heard about Thomas, who is now a very hard worker on the defensive end. Probably because Thad makes it clear that if you're not, you'll ride the pine.

Matta is a pretty pragmatic guy.

Oh, I agree.

But it did take him until his second year in the program to decide to start plalying defense. Deshaun just wanted to put points on the board last year. This year still remains to be seen, because teams are going to attack him because he's the supposed "weak link" defensively.

I don't think someone can play defense just because you tell him to. I'm not saying that's what you're implying, btw.

I said Thomas works hard on the defensive end, not that he's a good defender. :p
