Plot thickens for UVa at Hargrave
Wallace seen as Ohio State 'lean'
Doug Doughty
At least one of the reasons that I attended letter-of-intent ceremonies Wednesday at Hargrave Military Academy was the opportunity to talk to a couple of players who wouldn?t be signing, Eric Wallace and Mike Scott.
Although an anticipated weekend commitment had not materialized, I had assumed that Scott was still interested in Virginia, and that was the case.
What surprised me was Wallace?s assertion that he ?basically? had narrowed his choices to Ohio State and Virginia.
Considering that Virginia reportedly had stopped recruiting Wallace, I didn?t know that UVa was still an option.
It may not be.
I?m guessing, when Wallace reopened his recruiting in September, that he expected to be flooded with overtures from Top 25 programs. And, maybe he was.
However, as the fall signing period approached, it appears that Wallace decided that Virginia might not have been such a bad choice after all.
Wallace had committed to the Cavaliers in late June but, when UVa coach Dave Leitao and assistant Rob Lanier visited Hargrave in September, he notified them that he wanted to look at other schools.
Wallace didn?t eliminate the Cavaliers at that time. Nor did the Cavaliers eliminate Wallace. It wasn?t until sometime later, when it became increasingly evident that they were getting the runaround, that UVa?s staff decided to go in a different direction.
So, why is Wallace now saying that UVa is in his final two? How can the Cavaliers be in his final two if they?re not recruiting him?
My guess is that they?re still taking his calls, but any resumption of the Wallace recruiting will have to wait until after this weekend, when Virginia entertains 6-8 mega-recruit Patrick Patterson from Huntington, W.Va., and 7-foot Polish national Tomasz Kwiatkowski from Lee (Maine) Academy.
Also, Scott is still in the picture for what could be one scholarship at this point, although I suspect that Virginia wouldn?t stop at the NCAA limit of 13 (returning and recruited scholarship players) if the Cavaliers still had a shot at Patterson.
Scott took an official visit to Virginia over the weekend of Oct. 19-21 but will return to Charlottesville on Sunday for the UVa-Arizona game. Wallace said he may be there as well.
Scott seemed more certain than Wallace on Wednesday that he would not sign during the early period that ends Nov. 15, but these things change all the time.
Scott, a 6-8 forward from Deep Creek High School in Chesapeake, said Wednesday that his father prefers Oklahoma because he doesn?t think it would be a good idea for his son to be close to home.
A lot of people like to be close to home.
?A lot of people like to play in the ACC, too,? Scott said. ?My mom will have a say. I think she?s leaning toward Virginia, too.?
There might be some concern in the family because Scott signed with Temple during the fall of 2005 and wasn?t released from his letter-of-intent until he enrolled at Hargrave.
?Since Temple was the only school that was after me, I took the first offer and ran with it,? he said. ?Then, coach [John] Chaney retired in March, so it backfired on me. I guess that makes you a little more careful.?
Of course, there?s a possibility of Scott waiting until the spring and the Cavaliers being out of scholarships at that time.
?They know I want to come there,? he said. ?They know I?m not trying to back out of anything. They know that my father and I have a difference of opinion. I have trust in coach Leitao and coach Lanier. I think they?re going to take care of me.?
On Thursday, my third discussion in two days with Hargrave coach Kevin Keatts convinced me that there is no secret deal being hammered out between Virginia and Wallace. If Wallace signs early, it almost surely will be with Ohio State. After all, the only official visit that Wallace has taken is to Ohio State.
?It?s like I?ve been to Virginia [officially] because I?ve been there so many times,? said Wallace, a 6-7 forward from Kernersville, N.C., outside Winston-Salem. ?We still have a strong relationship.?
If Wallace does not sign early, Keatts ?would expect a bunch of schools to jump in,? he said. Virginia could re-enter the picture at that point, especially if it doesn?t get Patterson or Kwiatkoski. Wallace said he wouldn?t mind playing with Scott.
?Mike?s a good player,? Wallace said. ?If I were to go to Virginia, he?d be a great guy to play next to. We?ve established a relationship here at Hargrave and actually before that at NBA Camp.?
Wallace disputed the notion that he cooled on Virginia because the Cavaliers do not have great representation in the NBA ? or any representation until Roger Mason Jr. was picked up recently by the Washington Wizards.
?That never entered my mind,? he said. ?It was just early in the summer when I made my commitment and you just want to be 100 percent before you go where you?re going.?
