2011 NBA Draft: Top Defenders
By: Luke Byrnes Last Updated: 6/9/11
David Lighty, SG/SF, Ohio State, 6-6, 216 lbs.
David Lighty, a fifth-year senior out of Ohio State, has made his mark on the collegiate game by becoming the ultimate role player for the Buckeyes while playing alongside seven (if you include Jared Sullinger) first-round draft picks.
The experience and savvy Lighty possesses will go a long way toward making him capable of immediately contributing at the NBA level. The 6-6 swingman is capable of guarding at least two positions (shooting guard and small forward) at the NBA level, and possibly more depending on match-ups.
Not exceptionally quick laterally, Lighty does a tremendous job of staying in front of his opponent with his high basketball I.Q., understanding of angles and consistent energy and effort on the defensive end of the floor.
Lighty working out for Cleveland Cavaliers
June 10, 2011
Home sweet home for David Lighty, as the Cleveland native is trying out for the Cavaliers before the 2011 NBA Draft commences.
The next step on David Lighty's basketball journey brings him back to where it all started.
Or at least close enough.
The Cleveland native and Ohio State star wrote on his Twitter account Thursday night that he's scheduled to work out for the Cavaliers today at their practice facility in Independence. Lighty's last homecoming on "official business" went well as he went for 25 points, including a 7-of-7 performance from behind the 3-point line, in Ohio State's NCAA Tournament romp over George Mason at Quicken Loans Arena in March.

Lighty, Diebler work out for Nets, talk Ohio State
By Tom Canavan
AP Sports Writer / June 14, 2011
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.?Talking about Ohio State and its scandal-ridden football program has become part of the program whenever David Lighty and Jon Diebler work out for NBA teams these days.
The headquarters of New Jersey Nets was the latest stop for these two Buckeye basketball players Tuesday, and it was obvious the scandal has come up repeatedly after the seniors showcased their talents for next week's draft.
Lighty appeared to laugh under his breath when the first Ohio State question was posed, and Diebler admitted he probably has heard at least one Ohio State joke at each of his eight NBA workouts.
Living in the dorms, Lighty got to know Pryor and several other members of the football team.
However, he had no inkling anyone was receiving improper benefits or getting cut-rate tattoos. He said the situation caught him off guard, but he insisted that football players are not running amok breaking rules.
"Not at all, not at all," Lighty said. "Things that people see are not what you always see or hear until you know what is really going on. When everything is said and done, people will get a better idea of what happened with the whole situation."
Lighty said what surprised him was the unexpected resignation of Tressel, who had tried to get him to play football, something basketball coach Thad Matta would not allow.
Lighty always liked to talk to Tressel.
"He is a great guy. What happened is unfortunate," he said. "I thought I would never see the day he would leave Ohio State University. I wish him nothing but the best, and I am sure he does the same for Ohio State."
"It stains the university,'' Lighty, a 6-5 guard who averaged 12.1 points per game for the Buckeyes this season. "I think we’re one big Buckeye nation, so it hurts all of us. It’s sad to see Tressel go and guys like TP (Pryor) go, but I think they’ll bounce back.''
Lighty and Diebler worked out today for the Nets, along with nine other players, including former Villanova guard Corey Stokes, a St. Benedict's alum, former College of Charleston guard Andrew Goudelock and 6-6 Croatian guard Bojan Bogdanovic.
Lighty said the resignation of Tressel was the biggest shock, after all the success the coach had at the school. Lighty said he has a personal relationship with Tressel, used to talk to him all the time and still looks up to him and is "able to go to him and talk to him as a guy who is a leader in the community as well in other people’s lives.''
Ohio State guard David Lighty might be available when the Orlando Magic select 53rd overall in Thursday's 2011 NBA Draft (Terry Gilliam, Associated Press)
Ohio State guard David Lighty (6-5/220)
Played four full seasons for the Buckeyes. He also spent the 2008-09 season with the program, but was limited that season to just seven games because of a broken left foot. . . . He averaged 12.1 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game during his final season at Ohio State. . . . He also went 51-for-119 (42.9) from 3-point range in 2010-11.
Of the three players Bilas mentioned, Bilas said Lighty has the best chance of being available at No. 53.
?He can guard,? Bilas said of Lighty.
?He?s got a good body. He knows how to play and he?s a guy that will come in and do the dirty work for you. [He] can guard multiple positions. A good athlete, not great. [He] can make an open shot and he?ll come in and do no harm. He?s a guy that I think can make the league.?
ESPN analyst Fran Fraschilla likes Butler, Lighty and Moore, and he also added one more name to the mix:
Toney compares Lighty to Bruce Bowen, Raja Bell or Tony Allen, all good defenders and solid role players.
?Dave?s a better shooter than Tony Allen,? he said.
Lighty, 23, is always smiling.
?David has a quiet cockiness about him,? Toney said. ?You have to stir him up. Norris is cockier. He has a high motor.
?David is a consummate team player. He?s an exceptional athlete and defender. He?s got great size, quick feet and he?s strong. He can guard the ?1,? ?2? and ?3.? He?s going to compete and play hard. He can make a shot on you. (Lighty and Cole) are going to play 10 to 12 years in the league.?
Lighty appeared in 157 games at Ohio State, the most in NCAA history. He averaged 12.1 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.3 assists as a senior.
He played in a lot of big games with the Buckeyes, most notably the 2007 NCAA championship game loss to Florida.
His goal is making the right impression on an NBA team.
?From the ABCD camps to AAU circuit to college games, (now I?m) trying to get a job pretty much,? he said. ?You?re going up against the next guy. It?s not about rankings or things like that. It?s about impressing teams and finding a match for you.
?I try to go out there and play hard every time I showcase my talent on the court.?
Lighty?s agent, Joel Bell, said he?s worked out for 12 teams in preparation for the draft, including Oklahoma City, San Antonio, Houston, Chicago and Boston. He worked out for the Cavs on June 10.
Diebler, Lighty?s teammate at Ohio State, believes in the latter?s ability.
?The intangibles he can bring are something you can?t pass up,? he said. ?He can defend. He?s very explosive as an athlete. Each year at Ohio State, he improved his 3-point percentage. You can?t teach what he brings to the table. His ability to guard the ?1? through ?3,? and possibly some ?4? men, is going to be his ticket to the NBA.
?I think he?s going to surprise people with his offensive capabilities. He?s worked hard on his shot in the offseason. He?s improved every year. He?s a guy who is so athletic, he?s going to fit in well at the next level. I?m very happy for him. I?m confident a lot of teams will like him.?
ESPN draft analyst Jay Bilas said he?d take a chance on Lighty in the second round.
?He can guard,? he said. ?He?s got a good body. He knows how to play. He?s a guy that will come in and do the dirty work for you. He can guard multiple positions and is a good athlete, not great. He can make an open shot. He?ll come in and do no harm.?
Bulls at 43?I could see an Eastern contender pick up Lighty just as another body to throw at Wade/LBJ. Also, as an "older" player, he's probably more valuable to a contender than a building team.
OHSportsFan9;1942582; said:Bulls at 43?
Or Boston at 55? Both look pretty good. Thibs and Rivers would love him.
Ohio State's David Lighty waiting for a second-round call in Thursday's NBA Draft

Joshua Gunter, The Plain Dealer
"I think David Lighty will be on (an NBA) roster in one way, shape or form," ESPN analyst Fran Fraschilla says. "[It wouldn't be a surprise] if you tell me in a year or two from now he's having a lot of success because he's one of those no-mistake guys."
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Of the top 35 players from college basketball's 2006 recruiting class, 21 have already been drafted into the NBA, 17 in the first round. It started with Greg Oden, Kevin Durant and Mike Conley in 2007 and moved through fellow first-rounders Brook Lopez in 2008 to Ty Lawson in 2009 to Damion James in 2010.
Villa Angela-St. Joseph and Ohio State grad David Lighty, the prospect ranked No. 36 by Rivals.com five years ago, should be drafted Thursday night, not in the first round but as the ideal kind of second-round pick that NBA teams lean toward these days.
"If you look at the NBA, 93 percent of players are role players," Ohio State coach Thad Matta said. "There's only one LeBron, there's only one Dirk, there's only one Kobe. The thing I love about David and his chance to play at the next level, in his five years here, he was in every role that a team could have."

One of David Lighty's best qualities doesn't show up in his statistics, but it's mentioned a lot as he prepares for Thursday's NBA draft.
During four seasons at Ohio State, Lighty became known for his leadership. Now, the 6-foot-6 swingman is trying to remind teams he can also make jump shots.
It's hard to talk about Lighty without mentioning his greatest intangible.
"I was a leader kind of young," Lighty said Monday after his predraft workout at the Kings' practice facility. "I was a captain my sophomore year. They saw something in me I guess."

MaxBuck;1942633; said:I'd be cautious about overvaluing Dave. But for the right team, he'll provide a unique combination of leadership and defensive intensity that could push them over the top to being a contender. He needs to be with a very talented team, though, IMO.
NBA draft: David Lighty has put his work in

David Lighty isn't taking anything for granted.
Despite the fact most analysts have projected the former Villa Angela-St. Joseph star and recent Ohio State grad to be selected somewhere in the second round of the NBA draft on Thursday night, he's working out for teams until the last minute.
Lighty will make the final stop of a league-wide workout tour the morning of the draft in Detroit. The 6-foot-6, 216-pound guard is on a whirlwind trip that has taken him across the country to showcase his skills for almost half the NBA teams, including the Cavaliers.
"It's been very busy, very crazy, but it has been exciting, too," Lighty said in a phone interview on Tuesday. "I've talked to some of my (former college) teammates who have gone through the process, and now it's my turn.
"Some teams are looking for different things than other teams, but I don't change. For me, it's an honor to work out for these teams. I just go out and do what I do."

I completely agree. And I'm also a huge fan of his!Crump's brother;1942686; said:I know what you mean, and admittedly I'm a huge fan...but to me anyone who sees the floor in round 2 is a steal. Lighty isn't going to set the league on fire, but I can't see him as anything less than a consistent player for at least five years.
