SF David Lighty (Most Career Buckeye Wins, ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne Basket - France)

David Lighty, SG/SF, 6-5, 220 lbs. - Arguably the best defensive player in the Big Ten last season (although JaJuan Johnson of Purdue was named the Conference's Defensive Player of the Year), David Lighty is a versatile, veteran wing that should step in and contribute to an NBA team early in his career.

The 6-5 swingman works tirelessly on the defensive end, regularly checking the top perimeter scorer for Coach Thad Matta's team over the course of the past few seasons (although he missed all be seven games in 2008-09 due to a broken foot). While he lacks elite lateral quickness, he understands defensive schemes and does a good job of positioning his body to overcome any physical limitations he might have.

A solid defender throughout his collegiate career, Lighty has improved the most on the offensive end. This season he shot a career-high .429 from behind the three-point line, evidence of not only his hard work on what as a shaky jump shot, but his improved decision-making. Lighty also took better care of the basketball, averaging just 1.6 turnovers per game (the fewest since his freshman year, when he played just 16 minutes per game) despite becoming a primary ball-handler and offensive initiator for the Buckeyes.

Lighty's experience, basketball I.Q., versatility and defensive capabilities will likely land him somewhere in the middle of the second round in this year's draft.

Lighty, Diebler sitting way out of NBA draft

Will David Lighty regret not getting more involved in pre-Draft workouts?

Ohio State's David Lighty and Jon Diebler may not get drafted by an NBA team, and each seems to be doing his part to make sure it stays that way.

Lighty and Diebler just completed their senior seasons with the Buckeyes, who were eliminated by Kentucky in the Sweet Sixteen.

And both continue to reject opportunities to play in front of pro scouts.

First, they turned down the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, where college seniors on the fringe of the draft (read: guys like Lighty and Diebler) go to make their cases for NBA types.

Now, Lighty and Diebler have rejected an offer to participate in a pre-draft camp this weekend in New Jersey. The camp is sponsored by the Nets, Mavericks and Knicks, but every NBA team is expected to be represented.

Lighty is a 6-foot-5 swingman who averaged 12.1 points and 4.0 rebounds per game this past season. He is known for his hustle, strong defense and ability to score in clutch situations.

Lighty invited to Chicago camp

The list of players invited to this week's NBA pre-draft camp in Chicago came out while I was away last week. David Lighty's name was on it

I spoke with David Lighty earlier today by phone from Atlanta, where he is training for draft workouts, and he said he and Diebler were in Oklahoma City yesterday for a workout with the Thunder. Lighty said he did not stay for Game 7 between the Thunder and Memphis Grizzlies but did have the chance to visit with former teammates Mike Conley Jr., Daequan Cook and B.J. Mullens while in town.

NBA: Buckeyes to try to boost draft stock
Lighty, Diebler will perform in combine this week
Wednesday, May 18, 2011
By Bob Baptist
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

David Lighty said it's too soon to tell what kind of role NBA teams might see him filling in the league.

It's not too early for Jon Diebler to know his, though.

"The league is 90 percent role players," Diebler said. "You've got to do one thing extremely well, and I think my ability to shoot the basketball is one thing that is definitely attracting teams."

Diebler and Lighty, mainstays on Ohio State teams that won 109 games in the past four seasons, will be among the attractions today when the five-day NBA draft combine begins in Chicago.

It will be the first chance for them to sell themselves to teams that will draft 60 players over two rounds on June 23. Lighty has been projected as a mid-second-round pick. Diebler might go in the second round, or not at all.

While Diebler was praised for his shooting ability, Lighty was acknowledged mostly for his defense.

Len Elmore, an ESPN analyst and former NBA first-round, called Lighty "one of the best defenders in the Big Ten" last season.

Lighty was referred to also as a player who doesn't have just one elite quality, but who "does all the little things" and has "always played his role."

Spurs interested in Ohio State's Lighty
Written by Michael A. De Leon | 19 May 2011

David Lighty, a 6-5 shooting guard from Ohio State, is gaining some interest from the San Antonio Spurs, according to Glenn Moore of the Dugout Sports Show.

Moore, a friend of Project Spurs, is in Chicago at the NBA Draft Combine and spoke to Lighty earlier today, who said the Spurs have shown interest in him.

Lighty, who has played with Evan Turner, Kousta Koufos, Greg Oden and Mike Conley for the Buckeyes, is an athletic slasher and defender. He's very explosive when attacking the rim, is capable of defending point guards, shooting guards and small forwards, and was used as Ohio State's defensive stopper. Lighty is also a very good rebounder for his position and size.

In his senior season at Ohio State, Lighty averaged 12.1 points, four rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.5 steals per game.

While three-point shooting had been one of his bigger weaknesses in years past, Lighty shot a much improved 42 percent from beyond the arch as a senior.

In most mock drafts, Lighty is slotted about midway through the second round.

While the Spurs are stockpiled with shooting guards, the Spurs will be sure to take a hard look at him due to his defensive prowess.

Cleveland native David Lighty job hunting at NBA combine: NBA Draft Insider

David Lighty is expected to be drafted in the mid to late first round or the early second round.

CHICAGO ? David Lighty went through plenty in his career at Ohio State, but he admits he has never been through anything more competitive or pressure-filled than the NBA combine and the process leading up to the NBA draft.

"From ABCD camps to AAU circuit to college games, [in] this one you're trying to get a job, pretty much," Lighty, a Cleveland native and Villa Angela-St. Joseph graduate, said on Friday during the combine interviews at the Westin Hotel on Michigan Avenue.

"You're going up against the next guy. It's not about rankings or things like that, it's about impressing teams and finding a match for you."

Luckily he has some friends here to help him through in fellow Buckeye Jon Diebler and Cleveland State's Norris Cole. Lighty and Cole, who share an agent in Joel Bell, are working out together in Atlanta.

Lighty is projected to be drafted in the mid to late first round or the second round. But he knows he has a lot of work ahead of him.

"I would say there's always room to improve," he said. "If you go back and look at my stats from year to year, I've improved my game. There would be no drop off from that. I try to go out there, work hard and lead by example."

Lighty said he had worked out for Oklahoma City and has other workouts scheduled with San Antonio, Houston, Chicago and Boston.

"I'm pretty sure I'll have a workout with the Cavs as well, but I'm not sure when," he said.

Dave Lighty would improve any NBA team even if his butt never got off the pine. What a tremendous positive influence in the locker room, as well as on the practice court. His defensive intensity and streaky scoring ability are just icing on the cake.

Where Does the Ohio State Buckeyes? David Lighty fit in the NBA Draft?
May 28, 2011 By paulmbanks

david-lighty-199x300.jpg

David Lighty played more games than anyone else in an Ohio State basketball uniform. He played with a National Player of the Year, was on two teams that went into the NCAA tournament as the number one overall seed, and played in a National Championship.

But is Lighty ready for the NBA?

The OSU 5th year senior scored 12.1 points per game while averaging 4 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 2010/2011. But Lighty?s real contributions don?t appear in the stat line. An outstanding defender, Lighty provided a spark to the Buckeyes in every game. He pumped momentum into the team when they needed it, and slowed them down in tough situations when the team, on the young side, needed to calm down. His leadership played a huge role in OSU?s run to the number one overall seed.

For Lighty, one of the most positive factors is his improvement as a player. He jumped from three points per game his freshman season to nine per game in his sophomore year, and again jumped to 12 per game two years later. Always a standout defender, Lighty took the time to develop the potent offensive skills he possesses. In fact, Lighty could have been scoring between 15 and 20 a game, but his maturity allowed him to defer to other players for the sake of the team.

Lighty in town for Spurs workout
Written by Michael A. De Leon | 01 June 2011

Ohio State guard David Lighty is in the Alamo City today for a workout with the San Antonio Spurs.

We originally wrote about the Spurs' interest in Lighty when he was at the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago.

As I talked about in the abovementioned post, Lighty is likely an attractive draft candidate for the Spurs due to his ability to defend. He's also a blue-collar player that fits with the Spurs. However, the Spurs would have to move up in the second round in order to draft him.

Lighty's Game More Than Defense
By: Luke Byrnes Last Updated: 6/2/11

Five years ago David Lighty arrived (along with Greg Oden, Mike Conley, Jr. and Daequan Cook, all of whom became first round draft picks) on the Ohio State campus as part of perhaps the best recruiting class in the men's basketball program's history. During Lighty's five seasons (he was granted a medical red shirt after suffering a season-ending foot injury in December, 2008) with the Buckeyes, the program advanced to the 2007 NCAA Championship game, three Sweet Sixteens, four NCAA Tournaments and won the 2008 NIT.

Those experiences, including playing with a multitude of first round picks, have helped mold Lighty into an NBA-ready player who not only understands the game, but his game.

"Going through the college game, knowing the ins and outs of it and knowing how to conduct myself and handle myself well," Lighty said when asked what his strengths are heading into the NBA. "In an environment with a lot of talent around me, I played with seven first round picks in my whole span at Ohio State, so I know how to play with guys, know how to work hard and practice hard. I plan on coming in and trying to help a team win."

The 6-6 swingman did a lot of that during his collegiate career, winning at least 22-games per season and establishing himself as one of college basketball's premier defensive players and a consistent scoring threat for Coach Matta's team.

While defense has been, and will likely continue to be at the NBA level, his calling card, Lighty believes his versatility will be a key attribute for him as he moves to the professional ranks. {AUTHOR_ARCHIVE}

"Coming from college," he explained, "I defended pretty much one through four. At the next level, in the NBA, I think I'll be able to go definitely two and three and some ones, depending on the match-ups and how they are. Pretty much the same thing, I hang my hat on the defensive end."

Let's hope he goes to an eastern conference team so his defense will be appreciated

The Celtics had 11 players in for pre-draft workouts on Tuesday in Waltham including 7-foot Brazilian Lucas Nogueira, who is a first round prospect. Nogueira is a project, but at 18 years of age he is an intriguing one.

Other players in the workout included: Demontez Stitt, Kevin Anderson, Joffrey Lauvergne, Brad Wanamaker, Diante Garrett, David Lighty, Delroy James, Chaisson Allen, Cory Joseph and Terrence Jennings.

Stitt, Anderson and Jennings all worked out with the team on Monday, as well. Lighty, a forward from Ohio State and Joseph, a guard from Texas are both predicted to be second round picks.

Lighty update

Ohio State swingman David Lighty recently worked out for San Antonio, and it is believed the team?s front office is a big fan of his game.

Unlike Diebler, Lighty is highly likely to be drafted somewhere in the second round.

Lighty is 6-5 and known for his defensive versatility. The Spurs admired his ability to defend everyone from point guards to small forwards with the Buckeyes.

Problem is, the Spurs own the Nos. 29 and 59 overall picks ? which will probably either be too soon or too late to draft Lighty. Then again, teams swap second-rounders all the time. If the Spurs really want Lighty, they can almost certainly get him.
