SF David Lighty (Most Career Buckeye Wins, ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne Basket - France)

Lighty hoping to return next month

David Lighty is still in a walking cast after breaking the fifth metatarsal bone in his left foot May 11. He said he expects to come back sometime in August.

It?s the same injury he had two years ago, but Lighty said doctors have told him the re-injury was a coincidence and did not indicate any chronic issues with the foot.

Lighty injured the foot when he stepped on Jon Diebler?s foot during a workout.

ON DAVID LIGHTY...

- Lighty was in very good spirits despite the fact he was still wearing a black boot on his left foot as he hobbled into the interview room on the Schottenstein Center on his crutches. He was able to move around pretty well without the crutches, however, once he set them down.

The fifth-year senior said that he re-broke the bone in his foot landing on Diebler's foot during a pickup game in the gym, and like last time, he finished the game. He said he thought he had maybe sprained his ankle from the way he landed, so he tightened his laces and finished the game. It wasn't until afterward he realized the swelling was lower in his foot, which is pretty much exactly how it went down the first time.

He said he was down for "about 20 seconds" after he got the news, but anyone who knows Dave knows he is a really positive guy. He was that way with the knee injury in high school and the foot injury two years ago. He expects to be back at full strength in August.

Lighty Upbeat Despite (Another) Bad Break
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS ? David Lighty could have been angry.

By all accounts he should have been.

No one would have blamed him if he was still fighting the bitterness as he made his way to the podium Wednesday. Not with those crutches under his arms and the black boot on his left foot signifying the latest injury for the Ohio State captain.

He could have been angry about re-fracturing the bone that cost him all but seven games during his junior season two years ago. He could have been?but he wasn?t.

?I was down for about twenty seconds, I was a little mad, but after that is just, you know, go on with life pretty much,? said Lighty, who re-fractured the fifth metatarsal in his left foot during off-season workouts back on May 11.

?You can?t do anything about it, so why worry about it.?

Lighty was playing in an open gym with his OSU teammates not long after the team?s Sweet 16 exit in the NCAA Tournament when he landed awkwardly on the foot of teammate ?and fellow senior?Jon Diebler.

?I think he is handling it a lot better than anyone else would have,? said Diebler, who watched Lighty battle back from this injury once before.

?That's got to be extremely frustrating. He stepped on my foot and I felt terrible. I couldn't imagine how he felt, but I felt absolutely horrible.?

One of the best college "glue" guys I haver ever seen. I really think he has a long NBA future ahead of him due to his attitide, willingness to help the team, and his defensive ability. He may not have the silkiest shot, and his offensive game is pretty rugged, but some NBA coach and going to love taking this kid in the second round and have him compete every practice, summer league game, and minute he's on the court.

While I hate to, I must disagree with you. I do not see David playing in the NBA. "glue" doesn't mean a whole lot in the NBA especially when you are a young guy trying to make the team. he certainly isn't going to bring the older guys together. I also have a problem on what position he would play in the NBA. I don't think he has the ball handling skills or outside shot to play the #2 or #3 position and I think that's where we disagree because I don't think his outside shot is consistent enough. I won't even bothering discussing the #4 position because of his lack of size. The other thing that is going to haunt him when it comes to the NBA is the fact that he has broken that same bone 2 years in a row and I don't mean to fault David for that but it is something that management takes into consideration when drafting a player. If two guys were equal, the guy with the injury free career would be taken over a guy who has been injured 2 times. That is not a reflection on David. It is just a fact.

I think he has a shot at an NBA career with his athleticism, and defense. But I agree, that his range needs to improve quite a bit.

There are plenty of guys that became solid players, and in some cases even stars in the NBA that had less skills coming out of college than David. Off the top of my head, Bruce Bowen, Eric Snow come to mind.

The fact that David can guard arguably 4 positions at the next level is what makes him so attractive to a GM. He'd fit in great on a running team like Phoenix where he can guard multiple positions and would be an asset offensively for his ability to get to the rim. I don't see him as a starting player in the NBA, but I think he'll be a solid contributor off the bench somewhere.

Wasn't sure where to put it, so I figured I could put it here and it could be moved if need be.

David was talking today on his Twitter about all his parking tickets he's gotten in his OSU career. He said it was 47 tickets for a total of $1410. He said if you add in the city tickets, its closer to $2000. He said he's made himself because he thinks about what he could do with $1410. But then he says Jamar Greg Mike and his mom helped him out (obviously Butler, Oden, and Conley). I was wondering if that has the potential to be a violation?

Your reading comprehension skills need some work. Here's Lighty's tweet that you undoubtedly seized upon:
"Do u kno what I could have done with $1410.... Daammnnnn I'm mad lol... But I didn't do it alone.. Jamar Greg Mike and my mom helped lol"
I think it's clear that he's saying Jamar, Greg, Mike and his mom "helped" him get the tickets (and not that they helped pay for the tickets) by either driving his car or being passengers and advocating illegal parking. There was nothing in the initial tweet to suggest the others paid for his tickets (and a shortly later tweet says he paid all $1410 of the fines) - clearly he is trying to use them as scapegoats of sorts to pass some of the blame for getting all the tickets off on them.

Well excuse me if I was too harsh. I just don't like to see one of "our own" to read something and jump to the conclusion that there was a violation without giving the kid the benefit of the doubt or really understanding what was being said. Look before you leap!

Tweet beat 9/7

- David Lighty tweeted late this afternoon that the good thing about a four-hour workout (the one we assume he had just completed) is that his foot is not sore.

Lighty has not been cleared to resume playing on the court with his teammates but can participate in individual workouts with trainer Vince O'Brien, an athletic department spokesman said.

The Buckeyes begin on-court skill instruction with coaches Sept.15. Full-team practice starts Oct. 15. The season starts Nov. 7 with an exhibition against Walsh.

Saw him and the rest of the team yesterday tailgating over there by St. Johns. He saw munching on two big old cookies, and I told him he can't be doing that! He smile and say "Oh yeah I can". Side not...Jarod Sullinger looked a little out of shape.
