SF David Lighty (Most Career Buckeye Wins, ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne Basket - France)

Bob Hunter commentary: Lighty again plays big despite size mismatch
Monday, March 22, 2010
By Bob Hunter
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

MILWAUKEE - David Lighty, all 6 feet 5 of him, was guarding 6-10 Georgia Tech strongman Derrick Favors early in the second half, and at times it looked downright ugly.

But that could have been expected, right?

Uh, well, not exactly.

"The mind-set is just to make him frustrated pretty much, wreak havoc on him," the Ohio State junior said. "He's not gonna be used to somebody my size - I'm not that small, but I have a little bit of size - and my strength and my quickness, playing him like that. I can't do it all by myself, though. I had a lot of help from my teammates coming down and trapping and making life crazy for him."

Ohio State notes and video: Looking back at David Lighty and ahead to Tennessee
By Doug Lesmerises, The Plain Dealer
March 22, 2010

Looking back at David Lighty and ahead to Tennessee:

* Thad Matta can't say enough good things about David Lighty. He may wind up as one of Matta's all-time favorites. He is still peeved that Lighty wasn't on the Big Ten's All-Defensive team, and he talked about what a great job Lighty did Sunday guarding bigger Georgia Tech players after Ohio State's 75-66 win.

"He's the best defender in college basketball," Matta said. "He can guard any position on the floor. He did a great job moving around. And I forgot to say something in a timeout and he reminded me and he said, 'Coach, you didn't talk about this.' He's the best."

I asked the players about it before they left for Milwaukee, and they said it then, that playing a team with two big players is actually an edge for Ohio State because Lighty is so quick, strong and athletic and difficult for a bigger player to guard. Meanwhile, Lighty can hold his own guarding the post.

"If you're in a fight with a big guy, you're not going to stand there and go toe-to-toe with," Lighty said. "You've got to stick and move."

Lighty gave brief thought to NBA

While Evan Turner's departure to the NBA was considered likely and there were some murmurs about the possibility of William Buford testing the waters, little if any speculation was given to David Lighty leaving early.

Not that he came close to forgoing his final year of eligibility, but Lighty said today that the thought at least crossed his mind.

"A little bit. Not too much," he said following Turner's news conference. "I looked into it a little bit. His decision was a little harder than mine."

Turner said he discussed the possibility with his family before dropping the idea and beginning preparations for his senior season.

"I?ll probably think about entering the draft next year," he quipped.

I will wait until next year but I really think that David needs to improve his outside shooting before he goes to the NBA. It was decent this year but I think it would have to go for him to play a #2 guard in the NBA. I don't know where he would play in that league.

We could see Lighty play the Point next year some, use his penetrating skills, and create for the shooters much like Evan this year...

I've been saying and thinking that for a while now...the best thing about David is his body..for someone who is 6'5 - 6'6 he has a really low center of gravity and protects the ball very well. He has a nice handle, but he uses his body so well he can easily handle man to man pressure defense. Something guys like Simmons and Hill struggled with.

Lighty will have a long run in the NBA after next year. Regardless of his shot, he finishes well at the rim, and flat out plays defense. The fact that he's versatile enough to defend a PG, SG, or SF makes him very valuable. If he develops a reliable shot (I know he shot 41% from 3 in college, but it still didn't feel reliable to me, IMO) it will just make him more valuable at the next level.

This would be very interesting to see. In general, I think it's going to be really fun to watch the experience of next year's team blend with the highly-touted youth we have coming in. Most of all...it's going to be neat to see who steps into Evan's sneaks when the shot clock is running down and the game is on the line.

We might see Lighty skyrocket up the draft boards next year if he can consistently prove he's more than Bruce Bowen-like. But more Evan Turner-like perhaps. His improvement in three point shooting alone this year just goes to show how drastically these kids can improve when highly determined.

His ballhandling, passing & shot creating skills are definitely an area where he has room for improvement. He and Sullinger were just tweeting back and forth about David's post entry feeds - hopefully they get that fine-tuned by the time the season rolls around. Here's wishing David a complete recovery from the injury.

Same bone is not good:( sort of reminded me of Z of the Cavaliers and all of his problems. He probably will be ready to go this season but this does not bode well for any ambition she had to play professionallyIMO WB get ready to play PG:) along with Smith and Craft.

OSU men's basketball: Lighty suffers fracture in foot
Guard is expected back before preseason practice
Thursday, May 13, 2010 2:53 AM
By Bob Baptist

The first time the bone broke in David Lighty's left foot, it could not have happened at a worse time. If it had to happen again, there might not have been a better time.

Then again, finding a point guard to replace Evan Turner next season just became a little more difficult for the Ohio State basketball team.

An X-ray yesterday revealed that the fifth metatarsal in Lighty's foot - the same bone broken in December 2008 - was fractured again Tuesday when Lighty stepped on the foot of another player during a pickup game in the Schottenstein Center's auxiliary gym.

Lighty will have surgery Friday, according to a statement released by Ohio State. Normal recovery time is 12 weeks, leaving plenty of time for him to be ready for the start of practice in mid-October.
