SF Brice Sensabaugh (Utah Jazz)

The impact of Key’s big plays on the Buckeye faithful is evident, but freshman wing Brice Sensabaugh – who followed Key’s lead to finish with the second-most points (14) for Ohio State – confirmed just how much juice he gives to the rest of the team with his energy.

Sensabaugh came into his postgame interview calling the Buckeye big man “Shaq Key,” even if the moniker was meant in jest.

“For me as a younger guy, just seeing Zed play like that and him rubbing off on us with his effort and just his intensity, it picks us up,” Sensabaugh said. “Really, I was just joking (about the Shaq comparison), but obviously, as our starting five-man and a team captain, that kind of stuff, it definitely rubs off on the rest of us and picks us up to play harder.”

BRICE SENSABAUGH
Two games into the 2022-23 season, true freshman Brice Sensabaugh is the leading scorer (15.5 points per game) for the Buckeyes. That’s an interesting development, given that speculation surrounding who Ohio State’s go-to scorer will be is likely to follow it much further into the year. So far, though, Sensabaugh has shown he has little trouble putting the ball in the net, even if his two big scoring days have come against subpar competition. That won’t change on Wednesday.

This dude has the full on green light, best pure scorer on the team and just needs to keep letting the shots fly. Man this kid is electric, I hope we get to see more than 1 year from him. If not, enjoy the hell out of him this year.

Getting buckets is important. Being trusted enough to get a bucket is even more vital.

It's certainly still early, but Brice Sensabaugh has had quite a good first nine games of his college career. The No. 64 overall player in the 2022 recruiting class has been one of the most important Buckeyes early on while leading an impressive freshmen class for Chris Holtmann's team.

Nearly a third of the way through the regular season, Sensabaugh is averaging 14.1 points (second on the team) and 3.2 rebounds while shooting 48.8 percent from the field (fourth), 50 percent from beyond the arc (first among qualified shooters) and 83.3 percent from the free-throw line (fourth). The 6-foot-6, 235-pound forward is doing all this in just 19.2 minutes per game (sixth). Sensabaugh has been an effective and efficient scorer for the Buckeyes even though he doesn't even play half of the game.

While Sensabaugh has consistently been a key part of Ohio State's offense early on, what took place for the true freshman near the end of last Thursday's buzzer-beating thriller against Rutgers shouldn't – and didn't – go unnoticed.

With the Buckeyes trailing Rutgers 63-62 with nine seconds left, Holtmann drew up an ATO play for Sensabaugh, believing that the true freshman would not only make the right read and play, but score (or at least get to the free-throw line) to potentially give Ohio State the lead and the win.

With the accolade, Sensabaugh becomes the first Ohio State player to win Big Ten Freshman of the Week since Malaki Branham claimed the award on Feb. 28 during the 2021-22 season.

This year, Sensabaugh leads the Buckeyes in scoring with an average of 14.9 points per contest. He has also been efficient in his scoring opportunities, connecting on 49.5% of his field goals and 47.5% of his 3-pointers. Additionally, the four-star recruit has collected 3.7 rebounds per contest and is an 81.8% shooter from the free-throw line.

Should Sensabaugh finish the season as Ohio State's leading scorer, it would be the first time since 2014-15 that a freshman paced the Buckeyes in that category, as D'Angelo Russell was atop the team with an average of 19.3 points per game that season. Beyond Russell, Jared Sullinger (2010-11) and Greg Oden (2006-07) are the only freshmen to lead Ohio State in scoring for an entire season since 2000.

After his stellar game against Maine, here are his updated statistics: 21 minutes per game, 15.3 pts, 4.0 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 0.5 steals, 0.4 blocks, 1.5 turnovers. He's shooting 51.3% FG, 48.9% 3P, and 79.4% FT. His defense and playmaking ability for others are really improving.
