SF Alonzo Gaffney (transfer to NW Florida, transfer to Arizona St.)

I watched the stream of the Jordan game. Gaffney clearly has a number of positive traits. I wonder if he feels he is going to be 1 & done, but I hope he is going into college with an open mind. I think ideally he would be more of a 2-year guy. He has a very slight build, so adding muscle is going to be priority #1.

I think a lot of people are overlooking Gaffney because of EJ and Carton. I think he is being underrated by many Buckeye fans and might be the surprise of this year's class.
since i'm not expecting that gaffney will add the weight you'd like to see from a 6'9" power forward, it's a challenge for me to forecast his freshman impact. however, even if he stays a stick figure, there is a definite role for a guy with his length who can shoot 35%+ behind the arc. brewster academy doesn't provide season stats, but gaffney did shoot 39% (43/111) over 21 games for all-ohio red last year. gaffney's form is solid, so his proficiency will be much about mindset and confidence. it's anyone's guess how he'll approach the college game between his ears.

i do agree, though, that some fans are underrating the impact of one thing: gaffney's 7'4" wingspan. he may not have the foot speed to guard quick small forwards or the size to guard hefty power forwards, but that long reach cleans up a lot of mistakes. i'm reminded of how small forwards often drove past kbd (about the same height and wingspan as gaffney) and thought they had a clear lane... only to find kbd swatting the ball from behind the play.

i think kbd's freshman season is a fair benchmark for gaffney. kbd played in almost every game and averaged 4 points and 2 rebounds in 10 minutes. you'd hope that gaffney's number will be a little better than that, but i think it's still a decent standard for him. gaffney will be facing solid competition for minutes.

To me the only thing that is holding Gaffney back, is that he is not yet an alpha but at one point Giannis wasn't either, he needs a coach that will give him the green light eventually and that is why to me he has the potential to be drafted higher than any of his class mates

If there were a player with his exact skillset over seas he would be a projected top 15 pick in the 2020 draft

Ohio State's newcomers have their numbers.

Alonzo Gaffney will wear No. 0, DJ Carton will wear No. 3, Ibrahima Diallo will wear No. 15 and E.J. Liddell will wear No. 32. The quartet of freshmen make up the top-ranked 2019 recruiting class in the Big Ten.

California transfer Justice Sueing has also been given a number; he will rock No. 14. However, he will not be eligible to play immediately following his move from the west coast and will sit out the 2019-20 season before having two years of eligibility remaining.

All five newcomers are on campus, enrolled in classes and taking part in workouts.

Holtmann made it a mission to keep the commitment of Gaffney, through the process. And, it’s going to pay off on the court.

Chris Holtmann did just about as good of a job, as could be expected with the 2019 recruiting class. Landing a top 15 class overall, the Buckeyes are set for a bright future.

In this read, we’re wanting to highlight the talented Alonzo Gaffney. An Ohio product at heart, who finished his career up at powerhouse school Brewster Academy.

Gaffney is a six-foot-nine wing forward who can handle the basketball a little bit. A long wingspan and solid athleticism really help Gaffney excel in parts of the game.

Immediately, the freshman will contend for playing time and probably get some at that. Gaffney will need to put on some weight, but height wise he should hold up pretty well. A capable scorer from all three levels, to go along with high major explosiveness are big parts of his game.

Before going to Brewster, Gaffney played with 2021 target and offer holder Meechie Johnson at Garfield Heights. Which, could possibly help the Buckeyes in his future recruitment.

Gaffney is a skilled wing, whom probably will play some four in college! His highlights are a good dose of what is yet to come.
