Serious Car Question...

Recently I took my Car to Firestone and they tried to Fuck me the same way. Half way through the conversation they were up to $700 in repairs and some of the stuff, like fan belt and air filter I had changed a few weeks before. I told them to I was going to go in and pick up my car and NOT to touch it. When I got there they had changed my Oil without my permission and tried to charge my $60 for it. Then after I squashed that charge they tried to say I owed them the $60 anyway because they inspected my car. I told them no way and he gave me my keys back finally. Basically threw them at me. It was the Firestone on Hamilton and 161.

Change the Brake fluid? They tried that with me as well, it's a self contained unit and doesn't get contaminated very often. They will just bleed them when they put them on.

I took my car to here
Best fucking brake job I've ever had and it was only $253 dollars for new front brakes and rotors.

Ok - not sure but I think I smell some bullshit here.

For starters - ceramic brakes are only typically stock in very high end sports cars (Porsche Carrera, Ferrari Enzo), so I have difficulty believing they are on a 2000 Bravada. Brake pads for normal cars are usually either mineral or metallic (slightly more expensive, but more durable). I could be wrong, but I dont think they are stock items on newer cars even today.

Further, rotors become "at their limit" only when they are repeatedly machined down on a lathe to eliminate defects that have warped the rotor off axis or created surface defects. (Usually only from overheating the rotor, and it is very rare to do this.) They also can be ruined from drastic overheating, grinding completely worn pads against them, thermal fatigue, and sometimes rust. But his statement "at the limit" indicates to me that he is claiming that they cannot be cut down any more. I doubt this would be the case on car w only 103,000 on it.

Also, regarding the brake fluid, not sure what he means by "coffee". Sounds like he is indicating that it is burned, which again is rare. The more common problem with brake fluid is that it is hydrotropic, which means it absorbs water very easily. This water then corrodes your calipers and other brake parts. If this was the problem, I would think he would have said your calipers were shot too, but he didnt. In any event, it is water, and not heat, that is the reason that people should change their brake fluid every two years or so.

Finally, $750 for front bearings seems completely bullshit. Even only older cars when you have to pack the bearings with grease, this is at most an hour job per wheel, and bearings are not typically the most expensive of parts. Bearings on a 2000 car would likely be sealed, which would only reduce the time to install. I would think that new bearings are prob no more than a 200-300 job at the most.

I could be wrong on this, but if I were you, Id take my car elsewhere.

My thoughts exactly!!! I would get another opinion. Even if they had to replace the rotors (i am assuming that they can't be turned) and the pads and shoes you are probably looking at less than $500. Firestone sounds like the typical shady repair shop. You go in for a toothache and they tell you you need an x-ray and a root canal. Totally overboard.....

Yup, Firestone fucked me a few years ago too. changed my front brakes and told me that chances are that my back ones were fine and it would cost $30 to inspect so I said no. Then 8 weeks later when my fronts were shot again they said it was because my backs were gone and I had refused service on them and I would have to pay to have my fronts done again (I said no thanks). Honestly I really stupid about it anyway, brakes aren't hard to do, I was just being lazy cuz I didn't feel like shooting a Sat morning to do it.

If you were to go and get another opinion (you definitely should) I would NOT go to another firestone. Personally I wouldn't go to a firestone at all, the only reason I did that one time is because they are right across the street from my work and I could walk in after dropping the car off and back when it was done.

I cant believe I just read this. I dont give a shit what you refused, the fronts failing again has NOTHING to do with the condition of the backs. The only common mechanical element between the two is the brake fluid, so short of fluid draining from the backs, which you would notice immediately because you wouldnt be able to stop, there is no way the backs cause the fronts to fail. They fucked up the fronts, no question. With that logic, you could just as easily turned it around on them - that them fucking up the fronts caused the backs to fail. I would have sued their asses for both repairs, esp after I was fed BS like that.

It isn't hard to put on new brake pads. I would change those myself and see if that fixes your problems. If it does sell the car when it seems that there is nothing wrong with it if you want to get rid of it.

Buy new Brake pads probably $60 for front and rear. New rotors probably $150 front and rear. then buy the new bearings probably $60 front and rear. Then have someone you know install all of it for a twelve pack. None of the above is hard to install.

Okay. I talked to my buddy who is a mechanic. He called them, talked to them. Said they were being pretty honest with all the stuff that needed to be done, but said it was too expensive. He tried to talk them down, but they wouldn't. So he's gonna drive up here tomorrow and get my car...and then switch cars with me and take mine and fix it. He said he can save me $500. So...that's pretty sweet.

This was definitely the best perk selling cars... the guys in the shop would fix anything for cost of parts and some beer. Just had to hope the beer was opened AFTER the repair. :p

Just one piece of advice NEVER take it to Monro Muffler and Brake!

Monro is really different depending on which one. I took mine twice to the one in Columbus on, I think, Park and Galena, and both times I was REALLY unhappy with the service I received. Like, so angry at what they charged me and what they did I was never going to go there again. Then someone I know recommended me the Monro in Worthington, near Family Video, and they were fantastic. The guy was so kind, and so knowledgeable, and I didn't feel like I had been raped. Went back there once since, and a friend went there, too, and she was delighted with them.

Recently I took my Car to Firestone and they tried to Fuck me the same way ... yada, yada, yada ... It was the Firestone on Hamilton and 161.

I'm guessing you mean the Firestone at Hamilton and MORSE RD. There isn't anything at the interstection of Hamilton and 161.

Just to echo, changing pads ... easy

Changing rotors ... easy (especially if you bye new ones) ... you can even take old ones to many places to be milled back to spec (provided you have enough rotor to work with).

Packing the bearings ... easy but messy

Doing all of this in 10 degree Ohio weather ... sucks!
