Tennessee chancellor says SEC 'will not budge' on NFL rule​

The president of the SEC's executive committee, Tennessee chancellor Donde Plowman, told ESPN on Tuesday that the league "will not budge" on its rule that NFL players cannot return to college. Speaking on behalf of the SEC's presidents and chancellors, she made clear that the SEC is "prepared to defend our rules" and wants commissioner Greg Sankey to feel empowered to levy significant penalties.

"We have a responsibility to try and lead the best we can in this time of chaos," Plowman said. "Our group is united on this. This is not a rule we will budge on." She added: "Enough is enough."

Plowman's comments come amid a gripping potential showdown between LSU and the SEC over the eligibility of former NFL players who've committed to the Tigers but have yet to be formally added to the roster.

If the SEC takes immediate action to punish LSU, the league would be violating a standing court order issued by a state judge in Louisiana that prohibits the SEC and Sankey from enforcing any rules -- including conference-wide bans on pro players -- that would keep the players involved in an ongoing lawsuit off the field.

Plowman stressed that the SEC presidents and chancellors are most concerned with the "narrow" issue of players returning from the NFL to college, which has emerged amid a flurry of eligibility lawsuits of players seeking a fifth year of eligibility in the wake of the NCAA's new eligibility rules. She called the return to college a "line in the sand" for the presidents and chancellors.

"It's not a new rule," Plowman said of pros not being able to return to college. "We didn't just cook up a rule. It's not a new rule. The way we see it. We are a voluntary membership organization, and we have a right to set and enforce our rules. We want to clarify -- this is not about the five-for-five.

"This is about -- if you signed a contract, you signed a contract. That's always been the bottom line. You don't get to unsign it and come back."

Georgia AG to SEC: 'Take all measures available' if LSU plays pros​

Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr is encouraging SEC commissioner Greg Sankey to take "all measures available," including suspending and/or removing LSU from the conference, if the Tigers elect to roster former NFL players this season.

In a letter to Sankey on Wednesday, Carr wrote that his office is prepared to "use all legal means necessary to protect the University of Georgia, student athletes, and the integrity of college athletics."

"College athletics are for college athletes only, and we are grateful the SEC has taken swift action to maintain that standard," Carr wrote in the letter, a copy of which was obtained by ESPN. "However, the rules cannot be ignored or twisted to benefit one coach, one institution, or one program, and we refuse to stand by while that happens."

here’s the funniest part about all of this crap.

not a single human being that participated in any NFL activities is even listed on LSU’s official roster right now.
not one.

but if you listen to the media and this Georgia AG, you’d swear that we’re gonna roll out an entire team of NFL pro-bowlers.

Texas however has a starting O-Lineman that took part in NFL mini camps.
yet nobody is really saying anything about that.



LSU did evaluate a few guys, some practiced, “committed” to LSU, etc.

so if all this plays out and they are deemed eligible, LSU can (and i’m assuming will) add them.
but as of this morning at least, none of them have been added yet.

Right.....but the reason is because of the pushback. It's not like LSU is being super cautious here. They would roll out an entire team of NFL pro bowlers if they could.

LSU has been pretty upfront about all of this.
Whatever is decided though all this bullshit to be the rule going forward is what LSU will follow.

but Lane is a very polarizing guy. Easy to hate.
so he’s on full blast right now over it.

Texas has a guy that will be a starter on their O-Line that attended NFL mini camps.
for some reason, no body gives a shit about him because he never signed an actual NFL contract prior to being cut loose.

LSU received a “commitment”, but has yet to sign a guy that received a rookie contract and then was cut loose.


both guys were undrafted.
both guys failed to make an NFL roster.

one is perfectly OK to list as a starter.
the other makes you the anti-christ for even considering maybe potentially possibly adding him if a ruling comes out that would allow it.


and again, LSU and Kiffin have been pretty open about it from the beginning.
“IF it’s determined that these guys are eligible, then yeah, we’ll sign the one(s) that potentially make our roster better. If not, then we won’t.”

and honestly, it’s literally a major part of the Head Coach’s job to assemble the best roster he can within the rules.

And no mention of what LSU is doing while they await this decision? Are they sitting there helping to feed orphans while picking up litter?

LSU is actively recruiting these players during a time where the rules say they can't play. Seems kinda fucked. If you have to squint while you read the rules to make yourself feel better about what you're doing.......you're doing something you're not supposed to.

Other things you got wrong:
- Cole Hutson isn't a starter
- Plenty of people are also upset about that one
- There actually is a difference between signing an NFL contract and not



LSU is not just sitting idly by waiting to see what the ruling will be. They're pushing this forward in the same way the rest of the SEC is pushing it backwards.

The NFL contract is an easy red herring, something to point at and get people riled up.

No one cares about "let's get this right", they care about stoking emotions to get engagement or further their agenda.

Hey brother. Good to hear you weigh in on this.

When you mention a "ruling comes down", what exactly do you mean ? If that "ruling" is passed along by some jackass judge in Baton Rouge then I'm not sure all will be well. The SEC has weighed in and it has not been vague.

yes they are recruiting them.
like i said, they looked into them, evaluated them, received commitments from them, etc.

but until they are actually “available”, they’re not being signed.

sonyoh should be able to produce a ton of articles calling for Texas (specifically) to be expelled from the SEC, having their coach suspended, taking half their revenue, etc.

really?
so then you can find court cases that LSU (not players, but LSU) has filed?
maybe find quotes from LSU officials screaming at the sky for some sort of sanctions against the rest of the conference, etc.



i just think it’s fucking hilarious that THIS is the hill the SEC (and members) have chosen to die on.

not when Alabama actually played a basketball player that spent three fucking years on an NBA g league roster before going back to college.
not any of the shady shit the SEC is notoriously famous for.

a school very openly saying “sweet, they’re eligible, let’s go find them…..wait, they’re not eligible, ok not on our roster….wait maybe they are…fuck it whatever the fucking ruling is we’ll follow”

court case is today and has started.

can’t swear to accuracy of the leaks, so keep that in mind.

the SEC is arguing to remove the players not affiliated with any SEC schools from this hearing.

i’m not a lawyer, so not sure how that works.
these players were all part of a class action that the SEC got involved with after the fact.
