SEC schools that bring back NFL, NBA or WNBA players to their programs will face steep discipline under a new policy unanimously approved by the conference's 16 members, sources confirmed to ESPN on Wednesday.

The penalties include a half-season suspension for a coach, a fine that matches 50% of the sport's annual budget and revocation of league voting rights, sources confirmed.

The SEC's member schools also gave commissioner Greg Sankey the authority to impose additional sanctions as needed, according to sources.

Sources told ESPN's Pete Thamel that the SEC's chancellors and presidents voted 15-0 to confirm the penalties, with LSU abstaining from voting....:lol: The vote to approve the new policy banning pro athletes from returning to the SEC was approved by a 16-0 vote.

Actually I expect this thing to be getting dragged through the courts all season if not longer. I think getting Congress involved is the only way to settle it and we know how well they work.

Congress doesn’t settle disputes about the law. They make laws.

If you can afford to pay them enough they’ll make you a law very beneficial to your cause though. The NCAA and power schools are trying that now.

That's my point. Right now you have different courts issuing contradictory orders. How else are you going to solve the problem?

A collection of former college athletes have been issued a restraining order against the SEC, conference commissioner Greg Sankey and the NCAA​

The SEC faces its first challenge since voting to penalize coaches and schools that play former professional athletes. On Thursday, a Texas judge granted a collection of former college athletes temporary restraining orders against the NCAA, the SEC and commissioner Greg Sankey.

Earlier this week, the SEC unanimously voted to ban professional athletes from returning to college, and 15 of the 16 institutions voted to implement strict penalties on teams that defy that ban. LSU was the only school that abstained from the second vote.

Three athletes included in the latest Texas ruling -- receiver Jordan Hudson (Cowboys), linebacker Wesley Bissainthe (Chiefs) and receiver Omari Evans (Chiefs) -- are currently listed on NFL rosters.



This Texas lawsuit is the first to challenge the NCAA and SEC, but it won't be the last. According to Yahoo Sports, the Louisiana eligibility lawsuit has also been amended to include the SEC and Sankey. That suit includes three former Ole Miss players. Two of whom -- tight end Dae'Quan Wright and defensive tackle Xzavian Harris -- have already committed to LSU.

Sankey, SEC 'prepared to contest' judge's order in Louisiana​

Though the SEC said it will comply with a Louisiana state judge's order that prohibits the league and commissioner Greg Sankey from punishing schools if they play a football player who returns to campus after signing a contract with an NFL team, the league said it plans to defend its legal rights in court Thursday.

The temporary restraining order prohibits the SEC from enforcing a new rule it adopted last week that threatens stiff penalties -- a half-season suspension for a coach, a fine that matches 50% of the sport's annual budget and revocation of league voting rights -- for any team that uses a player who previously signed a contract to play in the NFL, NBA or WNBA.

"The order entered against the SEC and commissioner Sankey is a temporary restraining order, not a final ruling on the merits," the SEC said in a statement Sunday. "The SEC and commissioner Sankey are prepared to contest the allegations in the plaintiffs' petition at Thursday morning's hearing and defend the SEC's rights as a voluntary association to fulfill its mission to its member institutions.

"In the meantime, the SEC and commissioner Sankey will continue to comply with the court's order. Following the hearing, the SEC will carefully review the court's decision and determine the appropriate next steps."
