SEC Expansion - what's announced by August 31st?

if some married chick wants to move in with and eventually marry you, you make her get divorced first.

Close analogy, but wouldn't it be more like your friends ask if you are dating a married chick. (Even though you are) To make sure things don't get messy you tell them no until she officially divorces. Then you still tiptoe around it for a bit before sealing the deal.

Actually, you are married to a woman (B12), and her bitchy girlfriend (UT) has somehow moved into your spare bedroom and gotten a hold of your Amex card and check book. You can't stand it any longer, so you start flirting with the very fast and loose girl (SEC). Did I mention that she is fast? SEC girl enjoys your company, but she won't publically show any affection until you get a divorce. So you just filed divorce papers on the wife.

I good wrap up of the on-going mess in the Aggie to SEC story, with the news that Baylor is trying to block the move to the SEC - and as the SEC Presidents gathered to vote the Aggies in, Baylor called to say they they had "changed their mind" about letting Aggie go.

Since then, all Hell has broken loose, and just short of armed bands of Aggies marching to Baylor's campus to kill Ken Starr, they are not getting along in the Lone Star State.

This is getting messier by the minute.

"Last night, we (the SEC presidents) were called to Atlanta by (SEC)
Commissioner Slive to discuss the possibility of accepting the application
that had been submitted to the conference by Texas A&M to join the SEC.
We were to arrive at 6 pm. As the different presidents and chancellors
arrived we gathered together and the commissioner came in and said we
have had a late-breaking development. He said we have heard from one of
the Big 12 member schools, one of the presidents of one of their schools
called and said he would no longer support his earlier agreement to give
Texas A&M complete legal waiver to leave the Big 12. He had changed his
position and would pursue legal actions against the Southeastern
Conference if we were to extend an invitation to Texas A&M. We also heard
from the commissioner of the Big 12 and he basically reiterated that a
member school had withdrawn their earlier support and he anticipated legal
action from that particular school.

"So, that was the situation as we entered the meeting last night. It was a
complete surprise to all of us because we had received a letter from Dan
Beebe, the Commissioner of the Big 12, last Friday, September 2nd, that
clearly spelled out that their league had unanimously voted to give Texas
A&M complete legal waiver from any potential legal action, allowing them
to leave the Big 12 conference. That's what prompted the formal meeting
of all the presidents coming to Atlanta and making a decision as to whether
or not we wanted to accept Texas A&M as a member of the SEC. Texas
A&M had submitted a formal application for admittance to the SEC. But due
to the latest development we weren't able to extend that invitation.

"However, we did vote last night. And I believe we sent a very strong
message in our action last night. We had a unanimous vote to, basically,
say that we would be willing to invite Texas A&M to be a member of the
SEC pending a resolution of the legal issues that are still outstanding
between them and the Big 12. "We, basically, said the letter we received
(from the Big 12) needs to be reaffirmed by their league. Once that is the
case, then we will extend an invitation. But it has to be to our satisfaction
that we feel satisfied that we won't be encumbered by lawsuits that will be
tied up in courts for years.

"Once the attorneys for the SEC assure all the members (of the SEC) that
Texas A&M is legally free and clear to leave their conference we would
welcome them into the SEC."

Miss State's President with the run down.

This is the letter the SEC received from the Big-12 - and which led to the meeting in Atlanta by the SEC Presidents to formalize the deal.

Every University in the SEC should threaten to sue Baylor for having taken action after Beebe's letter initiated a trip to Atlanta, wasting the valuable time of its presidents/chancellors. :tongue2:

I can't see how Baylor has any case against the SEC. I understand that members of the Big XII could claim that aTm has caused them harm by leaving (a case they may or may not win, but at least there are some reasonable grounds), but how can Baylor say that the SEC is doing anything wrong?

It sure looks like an ill-timed, empty threat to me.

On a side note - this vBet was only 1 week late on paying out 9-1 for aTm only.

Baylor's move is stupid. It's a shotgun wedding that cannot last. What is their endgame, that they force an unwilling A&M to stay in a dying conference? The Big XII is done, all that's left is determining exactly how and when it expires.

Perhaps Baylor was caught flat-footed in this, and they've only just now awoken to the reality that their conference won't last. Perhaps they are now beginning the work they should have started months ago - finding a new, permanent home. Unfortunately they have very little athletically to offer other conferences, and they know their prospects are grim. But they have to know that A&M isn't going to recant and come back - or, if they do because they are forced, it is only a temporary measure.

This seems more petty than anything else. And had the Big XII not been browbeaten into accepting Baylor by the Texas schools back when the conference formed, A&M would be sailing off into the sunset-- er, sunrise (they're heading east).

Ha. I love that it says "CONFIDENTIAL" across the top and it stayed less than that. Never underestimate Gator.

Iowa State, Kansas and K-State have all verbally agreed with Baylor on the non-wavier of legal rights for Aggie to join the SEC. The little guys all see a bleak future ahead. Interestingly, Okie has no issue with Aggie leaving and will waive any legal rights associated with the move.

This is a lawyer thing, but the assertion by Beebe in his letter said that all B-12 members had agreed to waive their rights. This brings up questions of agency and the authority of the Commissioner to communicate that waiver to the SEC. Maybe their recourse is in suing Beebe for exceeding his agency. The SEC had a right to rely on the assertion. I wished they had unequivocally approved the Aggie admission - if just to screw with Beebe.
