Seantrel Henderson (Buffalo Bills)

Nation's top lineman has trips in mind
4/2/2009

Seantrel Henderson is living the lineman's dream. Usually, it's the running backs and quarterbacks who get all the attention, but this may be the year of the lineman, with Henderson leading the way.

The 6-foot-8, 300-pound offensive tackle plays for Cretin-Derham Hall in Saint Paul, Minn., and over the next year or so, big-name college coaches from every corner of the country will be traveling to the state of Minnesota to catch a glimpse of this special player.

Henderson is going to hear every line in the book over the next year. He's starting to choose which schools will get unofficial visits from him before his senior season starts, he told Sporting News Today. Ohio State, Florida, Oklahoma and possibly USC are schools he'd like to see in person, as well as Georgia, Florida State and Alabama. Some of the closer schools, like Minnesota, Michigan, Notre Dame, Wisconsin and Iowa, will also get evaluated.

"Right now I'm just trying to check out the schools and see which ones I like, to try to get a picture in my head of which ones I'd like to live at for the next four or so years," Henderson told SN Today. "I would love to go in and start as a freshman, but then again maybe the place that I choose might have a bunch of linemen back, and I might have to redshirt. I'll choose the best place for me."

Harris is one lineman Henderson looks up to. Another is former Minnesota Vikings lineman Korey Stringer, who passed away in 2001 from heat stroke during workouts. Henderson wears Stringer's No. 77 jersey in honor of the fallen star. He also enjoys watching NFL lineman Bryant McKinnie.

Hey, wait 'til you get this old - you'll feel lucky to remember your own name, let alone a recruit we didn't even get!

Now, where's my shuffleboard stick?

You think you could keep us out of Florida? We're moving in lock, stock
and barrel. We're gonna be in the pool. We're gonna be in the clubhouse.
We're gonna be all over that shuffleboard court!

Consensus No. 1 recruit likes MSU and U-M

Who's the bestprospect in the country? Well, since player evaluations are by their nature subjective, answers vary as widely as the weather in Michigan. However, every once in a while a player transcends debate and becomes a consensus No. 1. There's such a player in the 2010 recruiting class: 6-foot-8, 301-pound offensive tackle Seantrel Henderson of St. Paul (Minn.) Cretin Hall.

Henderson already has more than 30 scholarship offers, with Michigan and Michigan State among his favorites.

Late last month Henderson piled into a van with a few friends and longtime mentor J.D. Pride for a road trip to the Great Lakes state.

When a headline recruit visits a campus, it's customary for the school to roll out the red carpet. Time and care are put into preparing the best possible presentation. That's expressly why Henderson gave virtually no notice of his visit. He wanted to observe the teams' normal routines.

Michigan State, which entered the equation recently thanks to Pride's longtime friendships with former Spartans Sherman Lewis and Charlie Baggett, was the first stop.

"It was just real cool," Henderson said. "The campus, stadium and the football facilities -- everything was cool. I like them. Michigan State is in my top 10."

From there Henderson and company hit the road for Ann Arbor. He characterized that visit as "pretty cool," too.

Particularly memorable at U-M, Henderson said, was the atmosphere in the weight room and at practice. Strength coach Mike Barwis struck a chord.

"He's real intense," Henderson said. "Their practice is real intense, too. Michigan was probably the most intense."

Star tackle's deluge of letters is no hardship

Seantrel-Henderson.jpg

Cretin-Derham Hall offensive lineman Seantrel Henderson, rated the No. 1 football recruit in the nation for 2010 by Rivals.com, has a list of interested college programs nearly big enough to block him.

The 6-8, 301-pound junior left tackle is weighing scholarship offers from Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Minnesota, Notre Dame, Oklahoma and Ohio State, and he remains interested in several other schools, including Southern California.

Raiders coach Mike Scanlan recently suggested Henderson shorten his list.

"I told him he would hear from fewer schools if he narrowed it down to a smaller group he was really interested in," said Scanlan, who added that Henderson is more coveted than Cretin-Derham Hall alums Joe Mauer and Michael Floyd. "But he has not been able to do that. He's not tired of the process."

Scanlan said Henderson has made unofficial visits to Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Cretin Derham Hall's Seantrel Henderson (JOHN DOMAN, Pioneer Press)

The football recruiting rush for Cretin-Derham Hall's 6-foot-8, 300-pound junior lineman Seantrel Henderson has begun in earnest this spring.

This year, the NCAA is prohibiting head college coaches from visiting high schools. So on Monday, the Gophers had three assistants at Cretin-Derham Hall. No contact with recruits is allowed, but assistants can chat with Raiders head coach Mike Scanlan, who also is a guidance counselor.

Besides the Gophers on Monday, assistants from UCLA and Michigan visited the St. Paul school. Last week, Wisconsin and Oklahoma made visits.

On Wednesday, Notre Dame, Iowa, Michigan State, Ohio State and Georgia will be at Cretin-Derham Hall.

Henderson is regarded by Rivals.com as the top high school football prospect in the country. Minnesota was said to have made a positive impression Monday. Mostly, because of NCAA restrictions, recruiters at this juncture want to make sure prospects know they were in the building. Some want to view academic transcripts and video of players.

And, of course, said Scanlan, "They tell me what a good guy I am and what a good coach I am ? until the signing date in February. Then we go back to reality."

Cretin-Derham Hall's Seantrel Henderson has a weighty decision to make next year
Cretin-Derham Hall tackle Seantrel Henderson is the No. 1 football recruit in the nation and has top colleges from coast to coast seeking his services.

Seantrel Henderson finished up an important science class project Thursday morning to make sure the rest of his day was free for other important matters.

The massive offensive tackle at Cretin-Derham Hall had another bundle of mail to pick up from the office of Raiders football coach Mike Scanlan. Nearly every NCAA Division I college is trying to keep Henderson's attention with some sort of sales pitch or promotional material.

"Nobody has trouble finding my mail box," Scanlan said. "It's the one that's always filled to the max. Most of the stuff is for Seantrel."

Henderson adds the latest batch to a large box already overflowing with college correspondence. He then begins a brisk, 30-minute workout in the Cretin-Derham Hall fitness center. The workout has to be quick. Henderson needs to be at Mancini's Char House restaurant by 4 p.m. to punch in for his part-time job as a bus boy.

When Henderson returns to his South Minneapolis home at about 10:30 p.m., he has to pack for a 6 a.m. departure the next morning for a weekend trip to Lawrence, Kan., where he is playing in a basketball tournament with the Howard Pulley 17-under traveling team.

At 17, Henderson ? the nation's top-rated football recruit for the class of 2010 ? is getting an early education on time management.

"I know it's tough on him sometimes with everything going on, but he's handling the situation in a positive way," Henderson's mother, Zora Jasper, said of her son. "We're

USC is among the schools Henderson and his parents would like to make an unofficial visit to this summer. The list also includes Ohio State, Florida, Florida State, Oklahoma, Michigan, Michigan State and Notre Dame. Each of those schools has offered a scholarship. Unofficial visits do not count against the five official visits allowed by NCAA rules.

He already has made an unofficial visit to Minnesota, which has him high on its list, and plans to visit the Gophers again. Henderson said Minnesota is still among the schools he is considering.

"The things I find out this summer will be important for me," Henderson said. "That's why I'm trying to get as much done as I can to help make decisions. I haven't cut my list down or anything like that."
