Cretin-Derham Hall's Seantrel Henderson: Everyone's No. 1

Seantrel Henderson always has been ahead of the curve. He was born prematurely, received a college football scholarship offer before his first high school varsity game, and now is the top-ranked player in the nation.

Seantrel Henderson is a great big guy who is known for accomplishing great things, big things, sooner than most other football players.

He received his first full-ride scholarship offers -- from Minnesota and Notre Dame -- before he had ever worn a varsity uniform at Cretin-Derham Hall High School in St. Paul. They arrived when he was a ninth-grader.

He was named the nation's No. 1 recruit in the class of 2010 way back in 2008, before his junior season.

Heck, he was even born a month early.

The senior offensive tackle -- who has been in the starting lineup at one of Minnesota's football powerhouses since the beginning of his sophomore year -- stands on the precipice of even bigger, greater things: a college career at the university of his choice and an expected NFL future.

If that all sounds a bit surreal, you know how Henderson feels.

"I never thought I would be named the No. 1 player in the country," he said. "I've seen a whole bunch of guys and thought, 'Oh man, I'm pretty sure he's a better athlete than me.' It's an honor."

Those types of large-scale accolades befit Henderson's Bunyanesque stature. He stands 6-8 and weighs 337 pounds, equal to the Vikings' starting offensive tackles. And Henderson is barely 17 1/2 years old.
Henderson's maternal grandfather stood 6-10, so we know where he gets his size. His mother, Bree Jasper, who played volleyball, basketball and softball at Minneapolis Henry, is only 5-6. His father, Sean Henderson, who played basketball at Minneapolis North, is 6-4.

Seantrel weighed 7 pounds, 9 1/2 ounces and was 22 1/2 inches long when he was born in January 1992, a month ahead of his due date. He was off the growth charts from the get-go, and when he was 3, the family doctor predicted he would someday stand 6-9.

"He almost got it on the mark," Jasper said. "And I don't think Seantrel is done growing."

The college decision: "It doesn't really matter where it is or how far it is from home. It's like comfortability; as long as I know people around me care about me. At any school I'll get a good education, but at the same time I know that comes first. I kind of like a city, but if it's a nice college town that's cool, too."

Gophers coach Tim Brewster: "Brewster is cool, he's a real down-to-earth guy. He seems like he keeps it real, he knows just about everything, he doesn't sugarcoat nothing. A lot of coaches do, but he seems pretty cool."

TCF Bank Stadium: "I like all the stadiums, but this new stadium is sick, real sick."

Toughest opponent: "Spencer Cummings from White Bear Lake. He's a real nice D end."

Cretin-Derham Hall assistant coaches Ray Hitchcock and John Alt, both former NFL players: "They've been to the mountaintop, and I listen to them."

No. 4 -- OL Seantrel Henderson (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham)
Henderson's father says his son will make official visits to Oklahoma, Ohio State, USC, Florida and Notre Dame. He is also considering several other schools including Minnesota, but does not feel he needs to make an official visit with the Gophers. Henderson has not tipped his hand at all as to who he might be favoring. However, the new stadium is going to help Tim Brewster's recruiting, and if the Gophers continue their rebound on the field this season, I think Henderson stays close to home.
Prediction: Minnesota

I think Minnesota will be about the same as last year. Weber and Decker will make some fireworks but they still need a running game and a better defense. I think this comes down to USC and OSU personallY...I just see Henderson as a guy who wants to play on the big stage when it's all said and done. Even if Minnesota improves, they still aren't going to provide that.

TwinCities.com: Pressure grows as opener nears

Pressure grows as opener nears
Pioneer Press
Updated: 09/04/2009 12:40:04 AM CDT

Editor's note: Cretin-Derham Hall's Seantrel Henderson, a 6-foot-8, 337-pound offensive lineman, is the No. 1-ranked college recruit in the country. He will write a weekly diary for the Pioneer Press during the high school football season. He won't reveal his college choice until signing day in February. In today's installment, as told to Pioneer Press reporter Tim Leighton, Henderson talks about tonight's opening game of the season.

It has been an exciting week leading up to our opening game at Forest Lake.

I have been pushing myself and my teammates to really work hard and to be smart each day in practice. We really want to win that (state) championship ring. On Monday, I was messing up on some plays and was really in a funk. But I snapped out of it by talking to myself and challenging myself to be strong and overcome it.
I feel a lot of pressure to carry this team. I don't have any room for mistakes.

On Tuesday, schools could start calling me again.

I received calls from Tennessee, Oklahoma, Michigan, Florida and I spoke with Ohio State coach Jim Tressel. My first official visit is to Ohio State on Sept. 12 when they play USC. I am really excited about that.
I also made a decision this week and narrowed my college choices to six schools: Oklahoma, Florida, USC, Ohio State, Notre Dame and Minnesota. It is kind of a relief to make that list shorter.

Seantrel Henderson, ranked by ESPN's Scouts Inc. as the fourth-best player in the country in the Class of 2010, and the top offensive tackle overall, will begin to take his official visits this weekend. The 6-foot-7, 295-pound Cretin-Derham Hall (St. Paul, Minn.) standout's first stop will be Columbus, Ohio for the Ohio-State-USC game.

"The choice will ultimately be up to Seantrel, but we're trying our best to make sure he gets the best experience," said Sean Henderson, Seantrel's father. Henderson will be at Notre Dame on Oct. 17th for the USC game, and is looking to visit the Trojans the weekend of Nov. 28th. Oklahoma and Florida will also receive two of Henderson's coveted five official trips.

"He lives in Minnesota, and of course the Gophers will always be an option, but we wanted to make sure he saw five different schools from five different conferences, so he could get a taste of different things and see how that fits him and his personality. We want to make sure he has the right coaching staff and academic staff, and it's all about maximizing his potential and getting the most out of his (college) experience."
