Seantrel Henderson (Buffalo Bills)

ESPN: Checking in with top undecided recruits

Seantrel Henderson, OL, (Saint Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall)
The big offensive tackle will see Southern California three times for official visits. He is scheduled to be in Columbus this coming weekend for the USC game. The 6-foot-8, 301-pounder also has visits scheduled to Notre Dame (the weekend that the Irish play host to the Trojans) and to Los Angeles on Thanksgiving weekend for his official visit to USC. The in-state Minnesota Golden Gophers are a big factor, as well. Henderson typically is noncommittal when he talks about the schools that are strongest for him. He should be considered open, but watch out for the home team when all is said and done.

TwinCities.com: Seantrel Henderson diary

It is going to be a busy weekend with a lot of emotions.
Today, we play against White Bear Lake, a team that is tough and likes to run the ball. (The Bears are the only team to beat Cretin-Derham Hall in conference play, and that was four years ago, when the Raiders were in their first season in the Suburban East.)
After that game, I have to shift my focus to Ohio State, where I will be going early on Saturday. I've never taken a recruiting trip before, so I don't really know what to expect. I am nervous and excited at the same time.
I will be watching Ohio State play USC, another one of the schools on my list of final choices. One of the reasons I picked this date to go to Ohio State was to watch both teams play. Even though it is my official visit to Ohio State, I will keep one eye on USC and watch what they are doing. I heard this week from Ohio State, USC, Michigan and Oklahoma. It is tough sometimes to tell a school
you aren't really interested, but I also tell them that I am still thinking about it, too.
I felt pretty comfortable on both sides of the ball in our game against Forest Lake. We have some things to clean up, but we should be OK.

Here are the main attractions: nine recruits on official visits and dozens more on unofficial visits. Among the official visitors are six of the top 100 players in the country, according to Rivals.com, including Minnesota offensive lineman Seantrel Henderson (No. 1), Florida cornerback Lamarcus Joyner (No. 19) and Ohio linebacker Jordan Hicks (No. 21).

But Henderson, at 6-8 and 300 pounds, stands out in more ways than one. He's a recruit that could change the Buckeyes' offensive line, who, fair or not, has drawn comparisons to former OSU great Orlando Pace. This is Henderson's first official visit, and he says he knows the teams, so he's trying to figure out everything else.

"Mostly I want to know about academics," Henderson says. "I want to learn about that if I'm going to be staying here for three years or whenever, and I want to know the people I'm surrounded by. I didn't know Ohio State was like, the biggest school. I didn't know they were so high on the academics and they give a lot of help to athletes."

The whole big-game atmosphere doesn't hurt either. As the Buckeyes take the field as a group, gathering in the end zone, Henderson moves closer for a better view, craning his neck next to former OSU quarterback Kent Graham, the father of OSU oral commitment Taylor Graham.

"This matters," Henderson says. "I've never been to a game as big as this before."

Coach Brew's biggest recruiting target was jet-bound for Columbus, Ohio, this morning. Cretin-Derham Hall offensive tackle Seantrel Henderson, the top-ranked recruit in the nation, is making his first official visit, watching Ohio State face Southern California, another school that the 6-8, 337-pound Henderson will visit, along with Notre Dame, Florida and Oklahoma.

"It makes me feel real good to know that he would go through all that just to come and watch me," Henderson said after the game. "He's a good coach, and I like him a lot. I enjoy the fact that he would take the time to come over here and do that."

Henderson won't fly home from Ohio State until Monday. He will miss some classroom time that day, and Scanlan made it clear that there are worries about Henderson's academic status.

There was no jersey with "HENDERSON" on the back hanging in a locker, no beckoning signs for Seantrel Henderson's first official football recruiting visit to Ohio State last weekend.

And that was just the way his family liked it.

"It went great; we were very impressed," Sean Henderson, father of 6-foot-8, 337-pound Cretin-Derham Hall offensive lineman Seantrel Henderson said this morning.

Seantrel is among the top-recruited high school players in the country.

"They really didn't try to recruit us with a lot of college-type jargon," Sean said. "What I'm trying to say is everything was real genuine. They're about academics and him getting a degree first, playing football second.

"But if Sean were to come there, since they're always a team in contention for the Rose Bowl and Big Ten titles, they want to make sure that their players play on a big stage. And, thirdly, they want to make sure that he leaves college with the right skills necessary to be a responsible young man and take care of his family.

"And we definitely believe in all that."

It's not as if Henderson's visit went unnoticed by Buckeye fans, though.

"The one thing they did do is called the 'Skull Walk,' where the team in their suits walks from their hotel into one of the centers for the fans on game day, like a pep rally," Sean said. "The center is filled with people; there had to be 20,000 people easily inside of the place.

"So we walked the walk on this walkway with their fans ? thousands of them ? on both sides. And the fans were yelling, 'Go Seantrel, we need you here!' That really impressed Seantrel, and us as well. That was beautiful; that was big."

Henderson was among seven recruits Ohio State had in for visits.

Henderson's next official recruiting visit will be to Notre Dame, where Cretin-Derham Hall grad Michael Floyd is a sophomore wideout star, on Oct. 17. Henderson will visit Southern California, which defeated Ohio State 18-15, on Nov. 27. He hasn't set dates for Oklahoma or Florida.

Sean, who resides in Minneapolis, said there are no favorites, and that Minnesota is in the hunt.

Henderson's visits were set up to represent different geographic regions and conferences.

"Ohio State and Notre Dame are in parts of the Midwest, with Notre Dame an independent; Oklahoma's in the Big Eight, Florida's from the SEC, USC from the Pac-10 and Ohio State from the Big Ten," Sean said. "We want diversity and to let Seantrel be able to see different programs in different areas so he can make a wise decision."

RISE cover features Seantrel Henderson
Last update: September 17, 2009
By Brian Stensaas

Quick post here before I head out for some Thursday night football action, Hopkins at Minnetonka.

While many around here will be in awe of Vikings running back Adrian Peterson's cover spot on Sports Illustrated this week (mine arrived in the mail today), another local star is on another sports magazine cover.

Cretin-Derham Hall offensive lineman Seantrel Henderson was selected to be out in front of this month's ESPN RISE Magazine.

Here is a little something from the publication:

When Seantrel Henderson was on the freshman football team at Cretin-Derham Hall, he didn?t want to do anything to draw extra attention to himself. He?d already dealt with enough people staring at him in the school hallways because of his 6-foot-7, 300-pound frame. But Henderson decided to get more physical once he began watching the varsity offensive linemen practice.

?I started to realize football is a contact sport and you have to start knocking people out,? he says.

Since then, Henderson has been doing quite a bit of dominating. The senior standout has started every game at left tackle for Cretin-Derham since his sophomore year (freshmen aren?t allowed to play varsity for the Raiders), allowing only one sack total and keying offensive attacks that have racked up more than 5,000 yards of offense each of the past two seasons. Big-time football recruits are nothing new at Cretin-Derham, which has produced the likes of Heisman Trophy winner Chris Weinke, All-Pro center Matt Birk, Denver Broncos offensive tackle Ryan Harris and Notre Dame rising star receiver Michael Floyd. And don?t forget Twins All-Star catcher Joe Mauer, who was the Gatorade National Football Player of the Year his senior season at Cretin-Derham and committed to play quarterback at Florida State before giving up the sport in favor of baseball

Brewster's 2-0 team might be on display for hundreds of potential recruits across the country today. The nation's No. 1 senior, Seantrel Henderson of Cretin-Derham Hall, is expected to be in attendance ? not on an official visit but, he said, as a fan.

Henderson, a 6-foot-8, 330-pound offensive tackle, said a Minnesota upset of Cal would tell him a lot about where Brewster's program is going.

"It would be really good for the development of their program," said Henderson, who made an official visit to Ohio State last week. "A win would make them 3-0, and that would let me know that they are obviously coming around.''
