Scholarship Breakdown by Class

I believe that tOSU can only get to 85 by attrition from the defensive line. They are more than 4 deep.
When we are talking about attrition of players at the margins you could go back to Tressell's categorization as Power, Speed and Big Speed. Looking at it that way you could lose players from anywhere other than QB and RB.

So we are at 88 ( plus the expected greyshirt of Haubeil ). You have already trimmed Thompson though he isn't officially gone YET - though it seems a high probability.

Stump was making visits, so I think it is a safe bet he is 1 of the "3 more" that is gone by the end of the school year.

I think the other two come from either WR ( even 12 is a bit much and a couple upperclassmen are real ? marks for staying ), OL ( 16 is a bit much there as well and a couple of redshirt JRs and SOs haven't shown anything really ), or DL ( at least one of the many former 3* DTs is probably gone IMO ). The unexpected losses of Noah Brown and Samuel to the NFL probably saved a couple of kids from the axe but they still need to get rid of 4 ( including Thompson and Stump ).

Urban typically doesn't leave a lot of ? marks on signing day ( he's announced medical waivers on or right after in year's past so as not to even "look" like he oversigned ). But this year he was 4-over and didn't really say who is on the way out or being waivered. Collier graduating in 3 years helped the #s out some. And we did find out about Lisle, Trout, and Gibson before NSD.

I think they might jettison 5 even ( maybe a LB will med waiver too ) and possibly redshirt Haubeil instead of greyshirt him. Though Nuernberger could be a redshirt JR since he didn't play a down last season.

So I went over the breakdown. I counted 3 times, and I came up with 31 names in the sophomore column instead of the 30 you have as the total.
Also Eleven Warriors has Wint and Wohlabaugh as participants last year: https://www.google.com/amp/www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-state-football/2016/11/76881/freshman-tracker-nick-bosa-and-michael-jordan-pave-the-way-to-ohio-states-tenth-win?amp

So they would be sophomores, right?
Thanks. I was one over on Frosh so must have moved someone and not changed the numbers (not counting Haubeil until he is enrolled).

As for the redshirts, I took my names from a list that I thought was official. A player can participate to a limited extent and still RS. If those two only did BG they may still be true Frosh. If anyone knows for certain let me know, otherwise I will wait for the Spring roster.
