Scholarship Breakdown by Class

Just finished the annual update to move the classes forward.

https://sites.google.com/site/scholarshipbreakdown/home

If you are looking for where any transfers might come from look at the Sophomore class. 30 players including 8 DL.

Also note that we have 30 lineman (15 on each side of the ball) with at least 5 more in the next class. Not to mention three redshirt TEs one or more of whom might also move to the line.

OHIO STATE HAS PLENTY TO SHAKE OUT BEFORE NATIONAL SIGNING DAY WITH ITS SCHOLARSHIP SITUATION

Meyer probably won't speak to the media again until National Signing Day but it will be interesting to see which players the Buckeyes say are done playing for medical reasons, academic reasons, a transfer or something else entirely. Programs must be at the 85 limit by the time Autumn Semester classes begin or practice for that season opens, whichever comes first. For 2017, Ohio State opens classes this fall on Aug. 22. Camp will start earlier than that because the first game is Aug. 31 at Indiana.

With all of that in mind, here is a class by class breakdown of 2017 scholarships. An R in parenthesis stands for a player who redshirted.

Made the latest changes for Samuel and Lindsey.

Hopefully it is not too confusing but I am moving kids over from recruits to the team as they enroll. It is technically more accurate as they are in fact part of the 2016 recruiting class so far as the NCAA is concerned. (You can only add 25 "initial starts" during an academic year.)

When all is said and done we are likely to have an official 2017 class of a dozen or less. Our constraint is - and will continue to be - the 85 limit.

I have not yet removed Collier or Stump, but were I to do so - and for all the wailing and gnashing of teeth about class size - we would have one available spot with additional transfers and medical issues yet to come.

Gleitman feels:
- that Trout transfer news was a bit premature.
- that Collier won't count toward scholarship limit.
- that multiple transfers are coming (WR, DL, LB, DB) and that getting under 85 won't be a problem.

AN UPDATE ON OHIO STATE'S TREK TO REACH THE 85 SCHOLARSHIP LIMIT WITH TWO WEEKS LEFT UNTIL NATIONAL SIGNING DAY

79346_h.jpg,qitok=MK9WbJY4.pagespeed.ce.-pqoI5771m.jpg

Hear that? That sound is the clock falling under two weeks before National Signing Day. Feb. 1 and National Letters of Intent flooding the fax machine at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center are both not far away.

On paper, Ohio State's 2017 class is slated to go down as one of the most impressive in college football history. Nine players enrolled early and arrived on campus last week, and of the 19 committed a stunning seven of them are 5-star prospects. That is more 5-stars than Urban Meyer signed in his first five seasons at Ohio State combined.

The group is ranked No. 2 overall by 247Sports, trailing 2016 national runner-up Alabama. The Crimson Tide will likely win the recruiting national championship once again due to sheer numbers (it has 25 players committed) but the composite average of the recruits in Ohio State's class is nearly 95.5, as compared to 93.2 for Alabama. That isn't to say there hasn't been attrition with Meyer's roster, however.

Since we last updated the program's hunt to reach the NCAA-mandated 85 scholarship limit, star H-back Curtis Samuel, wide receiver Noah Brown and cornerback Marshon Lattimore declared themselves eligible for the 2017 NFL Draft. Wide receiver verbal commit Tyjon Lindsey also reopened his recruitment and later pledged to Nebraska.

As I understand it the school is bound as well.

The problem I have with greyshirts is that they don't count towards the 85 number, nor does their 5 year clock start, until they become a full time student. Haubeil will probably become full time once the season is over and seniors graduate to make room on the 85 limit. But if I move him over now it inflates the number of scholarship players on the roster by one and everyone will get excited if we are at 86 heading into the fall.

I suppose I could make him a Frosh, put him in parens and not count him towards the total.
