Snap judgement on the draft..
Rd 1 (3) - Trey Lance...I'd have obviously preferred Fields, but the more I read about Lance, the more I'm willing to play wait and see. Everyone that studied him and interviewed him raved about not just his physical tools, but also his intelligence and preparation/work ethic. Shanny has flaws as a coach, but one thing he knows is QBs. If Lance can realize that potential, it's tantalizing to think about pairing that with Shanahan's play calling. Bonus: NOT MAC JONES. Grade: B
Rd 2 (48) - Aaron Banks, G, Notre Dame: Don't know much about him, but seems like a bit of a reach. If nothing else, should provide some depth. Grade: C
Rd 3 (88) - Trey Sermon, RB, tOSU: LOVE this pick. Shanahan's offense rotates RBs and they all seem to feast. Mostert is fantastic, but injury prone. Wilson played well when called on last year. Sermon brings the most complete game of all of them. Fast enough and powerful enough, I think he could be a beast. Home run in round 3. Grade: A
Rd 3 (102) - Ambry Thomas, CB, scUM: don't like this one at all. I would have thought he was a 5th or 6th rounder at best. Maybe he provides some depth and contributes on STs. Not a fan. Grade: D
Rd 5 (155) Jaylon Moore, G, WMU: Maybe another depth guy. Don't know enough about him, but he seemed to be projected around here in the draft. Grade: C
Rd 5 (172) Deommodore Lenoir, CB, Oregon: A project with potential. Was a top 100 recruit. Good size and speed. Maybe he develops into a NB? Probably not ready to contribute immediately, but a developmental guy, which in this spot is okay. Grade: B
Rd 5 (180) Talanoa Hufanga, S, USC: was a top-100 recruit and had a productive career at USC and was really good in 2020. See a lot of praise for this pick. Could be a steal. Grade: A
Rd 6 (194) Elijah Mitchell, RB, Louisiana: Another RB is a curious choice, but in round six, I guess you just grab whatever tickles your fancy. Good blend of size and speed and was productive for 4 years in college averaging 6.2 ypc over his career. I don't think either Tevin Coleman or Jet McKinnon are coming back, so he could be a contributor. Grade: B
Overall, would have preferred Fields at 3 and more immediate help for the secondary, but assuming the injuries don't destroy the roster like last year, this is a team that should bounce back. Ideally Jimmy G stays healthy like 2019 and gives Lance a year to cook, but he's missed significant time with injuries in two of his three years as a starter...so that's a longshot. I'd give the draft and overall grade of B- or C+

Fuck football.
I'm no expert, but doesn't the training staff need to be looked at? Year after year (except 2019) this team gets leveled with injuries. Without fail. Last year half of the goddamn team was injured by October. It seems unlikely that they're just a bunch of injury prone players or that it's just bad luck. Something's going on somewhere.

Not pretty, but a 2-0 start on the road. D looks stout. If they can avoid more significant injuries, they could make some noise.
