San Francisco 49ers (official thread)

One good thing I'm reading is that Eli Harold has been showing well in camp. The combo of him and Aaron Lynch should help negate the absence of Aldon Smith's dumb ass. Lynch showed a lot of promise last season, and Smith was essentially a non-entity last year, anyway.

So, this year's gonna suck. I feel bad for El Guapo, because the OL is shit, and isn't going to give him much to work with. Interested to see what they do with Jarryd Hayne, as he was one of the real stories of the preseason league-wide. He's electric, but very raw. If he makes an impact, I suspect it'll be on gadget plays and on returns.

I have a feeling Kaep isn't long for the starting QB job. There's little chance this OL keeps him upright, or gives him time to make any kind of plays with his arm or legs. I wouldn't be surprised to see Gabbert by week 10 or so.

I think the ceiling is about 6-10, but expect something more like 3-13 or 4-12. Tomsula falls into that Mike Riley "great guy" area, but don't expect much from him as a HC, and the staff around him doesn't exactly inspire much confidence either. Looks like another rebuild is afoot, with little to build around if Kapernick crumbles this year.

You know your team much better than I do, but I hope you're suggesting that Kaepernick will get injured and not that Blaine Gabbert will be deemed a better option. Being worse than Gabbert is unpossible.

Have to admit, I never saw that coming. Dominating performance all-around. If they can get that kind of running game consistently to take the pressure off a Keap, there might be hope for this season.

That said, it's only one game. They looked like world-beaters offensively against Dallas in last years opener, then devolved into a sludgefart of an offense the rest of the way. But at least week one felt good.

Peter King is drinking the kool-aid...

10. San Francisco (1-0). Biggest lesson of Week 1: Trent Baalke built a deep team in Santa Clara, one that looks like it could—not will, necessarily, but could—survive the loss of Jim Harbaugh.

I'll withhold judgment for a few weeks before I say they're gonna be okay. I was pleasantly surprised by the defense, as it looked very good. Dominant even.

The offense was much better than I ever anticipated, but still only managed 2 TDs on almost 400 yards of offense. If El Guapo can be a true bell-cow back (well I know he can be, but will the OL let him?), then I think they could surprise. I lot of encouragement to take away from that game.

However, the Vikings could turn out to be an a total turd, so I ain't buying in on them not being a disaster just yet.

One other thing-- I will say I wasn't as put off by the all-black unis as I expected to be. Maybe it was the dominant performance carried out in them, but if used sparingly (like once a year, TOPS), I can see the appeal. They looked kinda menacing. And El Guapo and NaVorro Bowman looked like badasses.

2. I think The Guardian’s live blog of Jarryd Hayne’s debut was a lot more entertaining than the first half of the Monday Night finale. A sample passage by Aussies on the Aussie rugby hero-turned-rookie running back: “Righto, Niners ball, they have a crack through Hayne Plane’s roomie, Carlos “Jekkly’n” Hyde. He bashes through a few blokes, notches four yards. There’s a flag for ... something. An illegal formation. And the Vikings are penalised some yards for it. Next play. More flags. What now man? False start. And ... what is doing? And the Niners are third and 14. It’s not sustainable. And... that’s the end of the quarter. No siren? Nothing? Just that’s it. Time up. Let’s go off and breathe some.”

Well, I feel mildly better after week 1, but I meant that they were going to essentially HAVE to make a change at some point as the OL would render Kaep either totally ineffective or totally injured. Maybe the new zone-blocking scheme will help to mask some of these guys glaring deficiencies. Or maybe those deficiencies will come roaring back next week against the Stillers. In other words, I need to see a few more games before I feel it's legit. They looked great in spurts last year (though rarely for an entire game), but were a fucking sieve most of the year, and they lost a Pro-Bowl guard, though he sucked most of last year too, and a solid RT. Maybe they just needed to be free from their Ass-burgers stricken, maniac head coach...

I did dig the TE involvement. Hopefully that continues.

A quick word on the uniform Hayne and his team-mates will be wearing today – it’s not the classic red and gold the 49ers have worn for years, rather they’re in an all-black outfit, with flashes of red, in some kind of nod to the menace of Darth Maul. The golden helmet remains, though, and the overall effect is rather pleasing to the neutral observer.

First and 20, a lot. Quarterback fakes to throw, fakes again, runs over the line of scrimmage and falls onto his tummy lest anyone hurt him. You’d be teased in rugby league and penalised.

Niners ball. Ball loose. What? Kaepernick dropped the hut-hut ball, I think. Glanced away. So fast is this game. Second and 10, now. Give it to Carlos? Why not. He’s like John Riggins, another name from olden times. There’s Adrian Peterson on the big screen, a fine and shiny bald head, watching on as Carlos Hyde goes nearly all the way.

They are who I thought they were. It was fun thinking maybe they wouldn't be terrible this past week or so...
