HOUSTON ? Two years after he left the State of Texas to run the football for the Michigan Wolverines, Sam McGuffie reached the top.
It was just as he expected up there. But the top offered a most unexpected view: the campus of Rice University.
Still, it looked like home to McGuffie, a running back from Cy-Fair High School in Houston who transferred to Rice after one season at Michigan. He had to wait a year before he could play for the Owls, so McGuffie ran the steps at Rice Stadium as often as he could, ascending the risers because that was all he could do, climbing to the summit of the second deck just so he could run back down to the field and start all over again.
Starting again. How fitting was that?
"It feels good," McGuffie said during a recent lunch break between August practices. "This is my city."
