Well FSU just flipped a Bama recruit (Demarcus Walker), so I don't think bowl game results have such a huge effect, at least on some... We'll know after his visit this weekend where Bell is going to school. If there's no commitment, he's going Bama.

You are approaching it from the viewpoint of a fan which is the wrong way to look at it. Things that affect fans (wins, etc.) have much less influence on recruits that you think they do.

I agree with you on that. But if I was a college recruit, I would go to a place to try to win a national championship and with the way Alabama has done it in the past, it would paint a good picture of myself winning a national championship in the future with them.

But I wasn't ever in that situation so who knows what college recruits are thinking.

I mean I hope we get him regardless, but last night definitely didn't help our chances either. Did it hurt them? I guess only time will tell.

I wouldn't say replaceable, both Bryant and Barnett are good safeties. The big difference between us and Bama is that our two guys are seniors. Theirs are young guys. Plus, they have some young five star guys like Landon Collins waiting in the wings.

I think he's a long shot to start at either program as a true freshman. But his chances of starting here as a true sophomore are way higher than they are if he goes to Bama.

Highly doubtful he starts at the beginning of the year, but I could see him supplanting either Bryant or Barnett if they don't step it up some next year. Safety play was average and Bryant in particular made WAY too many mistakes...he will get the nod to start I am sure, but he better improve. Either way, having a guy like Bell to push him only makes us better.

Also, I think there is a real opportunity for Bell at Star. His coverage skills are fantastic but he has size and is very physical. I thought Corey Brown did well there for the most part but I could see Bell taking that spot. At worst, I see Bell playing lots of coverage on special teams and getting some PT at Star or Safety.

I agree with you that the star position will be an open competition and Bell has a chance there as do guys like Bogarde, Brown, Burrows, etc.

I do think you underrate a little bit how well both Bryant and Barnett played down the stretch though. They both struggled often in the first half of the year, but by November, they were playing lights out. I have a lot of confidence in those two, along with Shazier and Roby, being the center pieces of an otherwise extremely young D next season.If a true freshman is pushing either of those guys to the bench, our D could be in trouble.

I think the bottom line though is that in recent years the recruiting at Safety has been somewhat mediocre. Burrows, Thompson and possibly Bell will be competing against each other and some other young guys that weren't super highly regarded recruits for starting jobs in the near future.

Edit to add: Both Barnett and Bryant have a great chance of being captains next season. They should be the heart and soul of the 2013 defense. To me, that means they are not "replaceable" in terms of a true frosh coming in and taking their spots.

To get the topic back more to Bell, I was extremely impressed with him in the UA game. He stood out with his combo of physicality and coverage ability. I want to get him more than any other 2013 undecided recruit and it's not really even close.

He seems like one of those guys who is arguably built more like a good sized CB, but hits and tackles in space well enough to easily stay at Safety. Those guys are so hard to find and so valuable. They give you so many options on D and are especially valuable since they can excel against power teams like Wisconsin and also spread offenses like Nebraska. Nationally, these type of guys give you favorable matchups against teams like Alabama and teams like Oregon.

We would be okay without him, especially in Big Ten play, but he is the exact type of recruit who you really need to land to beat the national powers in future playoffs.

Last night I thought several times that Urban must have texted or called him....not sure if the dead period is over. If he was able to I bet he did. What everyone is forgetting is that Urban won 2 in 3 years. Saban has won 3 in 4 years plus the one at LSU. It's not like there is a major difference between the 2. Yes Saban has twice the hardware but it's not like Urban doesn't know how to put together a powerhouse that contends year after year like Bama is doing now. He has done it and by the looks of him this year it seems he is enjoying doing it again.

I would be very surprised if he was not in Bell's ear last night saying "you are a key piece to replicating the success I had at FL and Saban is having now at Bama." I mean look at last year's class and this year's class. Defensively in particular the recruiting at tOSU has easily been at Bama's standards and Urban has shown that he knows how to put together a winning campaign. It shouldn't be hard for Urban to paint this picture to Mr. Bell and perhaps make him feal like he can have more ownership in that process in Columbus than Tuscaloosa. As a recruit it would mean more to me in helping to create the next dynasty that being plugged into a current one. This one might very well go down to the wire. Personally I don't see the game last night being the piece that pushes Bell over the edge in Bama's favor.

Besides, remember Bell's 3 questions. Only one of them had to do with his football playing career and that one, re: playing time bodes well for us. If he truely cares about getting into coaching some day and cares about his education plan/graduation rate then we have a lot going for us.

My suggestion, sit back and watch the master. The fact that we even have a chance with Bell is incredible. He was a done deal to either Tennessee or Bama.

Taking a step back, I honestly believe that just being involved with the kid this late in the game is HUGE. Everyone down here in Georgia had conceded Bell to Bama. Hearing Ohio State constantly mentioned in papers or on the radio cannot be understated for the 2014 kids.

Big picture this is also showing the rest of the country that Urban picks guys, he doesn't recruit them. It took a year to build back those relationships but make no mistake Meyer is the best in the business. He also always pulls out a 5 star recruit out of the blue just before signing day.

It's fun to watch the master. Sit back and enjoy.
