what's the story?

Between Gant, C Bryant C "Pittsburgh" Brown and Jamie Wood they don't have much experience but just need reps. But then again Barnett didn't have much experience either but he looked fine the more he played.

After starting one game for the Buckeyes last season when captain Kurt Coleman was suspended for a late hit, Johnson had done just about everything he needed to do to position himself as Coleman?s replacement on the back end of Ohio State?s defense.
The redshirt sophomore out of Florida spent all spring working alongside senior Jermale Hines on the first-team defense, and opened fall camp as a projected starter for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State spotlight: Orhian Johnson

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Back at the start of Ohio State's preseason camp, it was assumed that Orhian Johnson was penciled in as the the new starter at strong safety, even by Johnson.
"Anybody who thinks they're penciled in, that's a problem," Ohio State co-defensive coordinator Luke Fickell said. "Just like playing golf with you. Whoever's got the pencil might be the winner."
It's clear now that Johnson didn't have the pencil. C.J. Barnett did. He turned it into an ink pen when he won the starting job over Johnson, whose effort also was hurt by a calf muscle pull at crunch time.
But now Barnett is likely out for the season after undergoing surgery earlier this week to repair the injury to his right knee, suffered in the third quarter of last Saturday's win over Miami. Johnson stepped into the lineup for him that day, and is expected to start against Ohio University and its spread offense today. But with Aaron Gant and Zach Domicone also in the wings, it's not like Johnson's name is there in ink yet.
"We're trying to stress that each and every week there's a lot of competition," Fickell said. "Yes, we had high hopes for Orhian and like we've always said, you've got to put it on film and show it, and that's during a game that most often you want to see."
It's best when it's a full DVD, too, he said, and not just snippets, like when he entered for Barnett last week.
"The situation of the game was not quite the same. The guy coming off the bench as the sixth man doesn't quite have the pressure that the guy going out there to start the game has," Fickell said. "We expect great things from him, and that's kind of where we were going into camp."
Asked whether there was a chance Tyler Moeller also could move into that spot next to starting free safety Jermale Hines, Fickell said "How ever we can get te best 11 out there, we'll find a way to do it."
