Torn ACL knocks Colts safety Doss out for season
Oct. 23, 2006
CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

INDIANAPOLIS -- Colts safety Mike Doss will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL in his right knee.

Doss suffered the injury during Sunday's game against the Washington Redskins and medical tests determined the tear, Colts coach Tony Dungy said Monday.

Doss had been a starter the last two years but came off the bench the first two games this season until Bob Sanders suffered a knee injury. Sanders has missed the last four games after having arthroscopic surgery on his right knee.

Dungy is hopeful Sanders will return this week.

I'm a big Colts fan, and this is a tough, tough loss. Bob Sanders is still hurt, and that makes both of our safties in street clothes. Mike has done a great job this season playing all over the field, making plays and getting key interceptions. Our run defense would be worse if it wasn't for Mike too. He makes a lot of stops in the open field on runs that could have been a lot worse.

Down but not forgotten

I hope Mike's recovery is going well. It doesn't look like the Colts plan on keeping him after this season so I hope everything works out. I enjoyed being able to catch some of his cames with Indy in person, but I'd like to see him in a better situation somewhere else. That field turf in the dome was just not kind to his body.

This latest setback is terrible considering how well he was playing(and the fact that he shouldn't have been in the game in the first place,he got injured late in the 4th when they were blowing out the fuckin' redskins)Plus, I think the one off the field incident, coupled with the nagging injuries placed him in a undeserved doghouse with some of the coaches and fans. His career never got off properly here,a change of scenery might be best.

One of my favorite pics of Mike from this season right after a huge hit.He was instrumental in this victory, one of his best games as a Colt.. Some fans wanted to downplay the loss of Doss by only wanting to mention Sanders. But when Mike was healthy,he was getting things done. The next time they played the Jaguars, they got surgically gutted.

It was great to see Mike on the sidelines during the last Fiesta. I hope he can make it out to Glendale to witness another buckeye team try to do what he did four years ago.

Maybe my personal opinion of doss is effecting my view of him as a player, but in the NFL he is a liability in the passing game (too slow) and decent against the run. His rookie year was impressive, but since then he has been on a downward slide. marlon jackson will be replacing him after this season.

Mike was a great Buckeye and college player, but his skills just haven't progressed in the pro game. It happens.

SUNDAY SPECIAL BY TODD PORTER

"Coach Dungy was all for me going back to school," Doss said. "I knew they wanted me to rehab and progress toward returning. I went to Birmingham the first two months (November and December), and now I'm at Ohio State rehabbing with the Ohio State trainers and going to school."

SPORTS SPOTLIGHT TODD PORTER

If Mike Doss is being completely honest, then yes, he is having a great time in Miami. It is a childhood dream to be a part of the Super Bowl. But deep down, all is not well with the former Ohio State All-American and McKinley High School All-Ohioan.
Doss can't play in Sunday's game. That is a tough pill to swallow.

MIAMI ? News and notes from Super Bowl XLI:

* REMEMBER ME: Former Canton McKinley and Ohio State star Mike Doss is with his Colts team, but unable to play because of knee surgery in October. Doss says he?ll be ready for minicamp next season, but clearly sees the writing on the wall and has the mindset of leaving the team in free agency. ?Tell Phil Savage that if he doesn?t sign me in free agency, he?ll be making a big mistake," Doss said.

I still remember his saying during the NC year that he has won a championship at every level that he had played and wanted to do the same in college. That's how he announce that he will be back for his senior year at tOSU.

This is really bad that he can't play in this game. But I am sure he'll be back to Super Bowl later on in his career.
