Male Athlete of the Year: In basketball or football, Malik Hooker was the man

20140401mffab5sports04-3.jpg

A conversation with Malik Hooker is filled with "yes, sirs" and "no, sirs."

When asked if he answers everybody with so many "yes, sirs" Hooker naturally said: "Yes, sir. My mom always told me to be respectful to elders and people who are older because it will pay off in the long run."

The whole respect thing seems kind of funny coming from Hooker because in high school sports, Hooker often seemed like the man among boys.

A senior at New Castle High School, Hooker played football and basketball. He was The Human Highlight Film of the WPIAL. Heck, he appeared on ESPN for SportsCenter's top 10 plays twice with dunks.

It didn't matter the sport. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Hooker was often on a different level with a rare blend of traits. He could be strong and powerful one minute, but skillful and acrobatic the next.

Hooker will play football at Ohio State and already is in Columbus taking classes and working out with the Buckeyes. Coaches -- in basketball and football -- believe Hooker has a very bright future. But this past season, he shined like no other athlete in Western Pennsylvania.

Coaches Happy With Malik Hooker, But Meyer Wants to See More 'On-Field Arrogance

MalikHookerSpring.jpg

They say you never know what you've got until it's gone, and that could almost describe the Ohio State situation at safety this coming season had we not heard how good Malik Hooker was going to be from his teammates a season ago.

Losing a pair of multi-year starters at a position that requires expertise in the physical, mental and communicative areas is always going to leave a lake-sized crater, and many times that crater isn't truly discovered until their two replacements tumble face-first into it for all to see.

While the Buckeyes weren't sure how the safety situation would shake out this spring — as evidenced by Damon Webb moving over from cornerback after a few practices and winning the free safety job at this point — there was always a confidence by those who watched Hooker in practice last year that he would be ready to step up in 2016.

The one person who didn't get to watch him last year, however, is his new position coach, Greg Schiano. Schiano did go back and analyze every snap and every rep that Hooker took last season, but tried to come into the spring without any preconceived notions or expectations.

"I didn’t really have expectations other than what people had told me about him, but working with him was enjoyable," Schiano said. "He’s a football guy, he loves the game, studies the game. Made a lot of mistakes but also did a lot of good things. So we just have to eliminate the mistakes and keep making the good things better."

Schiano learned something new about Hooker every day, and every test or lesson given came back with the type of answer or response that Schiano could happily work with.

"He loves football," he said. "He is a football guy. He studies it, he enjoys being in the meeting room, he enjoys doing the walk through stuff. When guys love it, that makes it a lot easier."

Ohio State’s faith in Malik Hooker is about to pay off

RYAN GINN
Land Of 10 Staff

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Nobody knows exactly when Malik Hooker will transform into a superstar at Ohio State, but most seem to agree that it’s a question of when and not if.

It could be as early as this fall given his status as a frontrunner alongside Damon Webb in the battle to fill the two vacant starting spots at safety. It could also take longer, which wouldn’t be a surprise given the path his life has taken. If and when it does happen, however, it will turn his recruitment and subsequent development into one of Ohio State’s most successful calculated risks, serving as a blueprint for high-upside recruits and the schools that believe in them.

Here’s how it unfolded.

It’s 2012 and Joe Cowart is the new head football coach at New Castle (Pa.) High School, where he also teaches math. He’s seen Hooker roaming the halls and has made it his mission to get him on the gridiron, only to learn that Hooker’s heart – and prodigious athleticism – belong to basketball, where he’d once produced a rim-rattling dunk that landed him on ESPN’s SportsCenter.

“There’s not a lot of guys that walk around a high school and look the way he looked, especially as a sophomore in high school,” Cowart said. “He was a 6-1, 180-pound athlete.”

He has Hooker in a class, so he asks him to try football. And asks again. And again. One day, the answer is yes. New Castle’s first game is against Monaca (Pa.) Central Valley, home of Alabama wide receiver commit Robert Foster. Central Valley defeats the Red Hurricanes 31-7, but Cowart said there were large stretches where Hooker was the best player on the field in his first high school football game.
