S Malik Hartford (Official Thread)

“For me, I got all the offers I felt like I needed,” Hartford said of his decision to commit to Ohio State. “I got all the big schools I felt like I needed to have. And from there, I just chose Ohio State because it felt like the right place.”

So, why did he choose Ohio State in the first place?

“The program in general,” Hartford said. “The ability to play for championships, get developed, go to the NFL.”

Welcome aboard Malik! One of the better Ohio players in his class and though it was a foregone conclusion, this was a guy we had to get. Probably projects at safety where I see him in the Malik Hooker mold (not just because of the name). Glad to have this one in the books.

Just curious, but what in his game do you see as Malik Hooker? Because that's the last comp I see in him. Hooker was a ball hawk who was like another CB, and Hartford is a thumper who also excels on special teams and is further along as a football player than Hooker was(since his main focus was basketball)

I wouldn’t project that Hartford and Hooker would even play the same safety position. Hooker was the deep third eraser. I think Hartford is better suited as an in the box safety.

Moved up: 63 spots

A big, rangy safety, Hartford is a major playmaker in the secondary. The Ohio State commit is a very good run defender and uses his speed to chase down ball carriers. Hartford can read the quarterback’s eyes and cover the deep middle of the field effectively. He does a good job in jump ball situations and has a solid sense of timing as well.

Now at #12 S and 162 overall

I want to like this and don't want to be a buzz kill, but seriously hope that kid is ok. I like the aggression, but the lowering of the head will get him in trouble whether by injury and/or penalties or ejections. Anyone know if he got ejected for this one? I love that he's a hitter, just needs to do it in a way that won't get him in trouble.

Looked like he led with the shoulder to me and I believe he was ejected

Here’s another view. Unfortunately he was ejected, and like @brodybuck21 said, it also looks to me that he lowered his head but led with his shoulder. Unfortunately it’s so close, that he’d probably be ejected on almost every level. But it was just a hard hit to me

Can see that one much better, thanks for posting that. He did lower the shoulder and not the head. Still would have been ejected at any level like you said, but it was an extremely hard hit. You can see the insane closing ability and toughness, just gotta avoid leading with the upper body because of how much scrutiny there is on hits on a "defenseless" receiver. He'll be alright, just might want to send that poor kid a fruit basket as a sign of goodwill

Edit: After rewatching, that receiver held onto the ball somehow. WOW.
