The Rams then took Ohio State safety Jermale Hines, a 6-foot-1, 219-pound all-Big Ten selection.

"It was a little bit nerve-wracking watching guys get selected before you," Hines said. "I'm thankful for the opportunity."

Spagnuolo joked that he didn't want linebacker James Laurinaitis "yell" at him for "not taking an Ohio State guy." Hines said he heard from both Laurinaitis and former Ohio State linebacker Larry Grant following his selection.

With the lockout back in place, Hines said he'd lean on those two to learn about the Rams defense. Hines, whose career overlapped with Laurinaitis, began his Ohio State career at linebacker and was moved around quite a bit as a safety.

"All the indications we got out of Ohio State was that he's one of those leader guys when he walks in the room," Spagnuolo said. "That's what comes out, so we're glad to have him."

agreed....despite all the crap that Kiper catches because of his flamboyant style, the guy flat out knows more than just about anyone else out there. Sure, he whiffs at times, but at a much lower frequency.

The utter disrespect shown BigTen skilled position players is ridiculous.

Another surprising non-draftee was the Oregon WR Jeff Maehl. That guy was very very good.

Versatile Hines hopes to give Rams options

There was some thought the St. Louis Rams would target defensive tackle in the 2011 NFL draft, even in the first round.

It never happened during the early or middle rounds.

The team has two seventh-round choices remaining after using the 158th overall choice, a fifth-rounder, for Ohio State safety Jermale Hines, who weighs 219 pounds and could have longer-term potential at outside linebacker, according to scouts.

The Rams had a need at safety after watching veteran starter Oshiomogho Atogwe sign with the Washington Redskins this offseason.

"I played nickelback, I played strong safety and I played free safety," Hines told reporters in St. Louis after being drafted. "I did a little bit of everything -- dropping down in the box, helping support the run, playing off the deep half."

Hines said he played a combination linebacker-safety position, and served as a blitzer.

That versatility could come in handy given the injury problems that have affected St. Louis at both safety spots.

"I'm a physical guy," Hines said. "I like to impose my will on opponents. Hit as much as I could."

4 draft picks agree to terms

With reporting day tomorrow for Rams training camp, four draft picks have agreed to terms with St. Louis as of late Thursday afternoon:

_ Fourth-round WR Greg Salas of Hawaii.

_ Fifth-round S Jermale Hines of Ohio State.

_ Seventh-round CB Mikail Baker of Baylor

_ Seventh-round S Jonathan Nelson of Oklahoma

St. Louis Rams safety Jermale Hines is different

Quick, what sets St. Louis Rams rookie safety Jermale Hines apart from the other safeties on the team? He was drafted. St. Louis picks Hines in the fifth-round this year, and he plays with a group of players that were all undrafted.

Hines saw snaps through the entire game last week. Replacing a linebacker in the nickel and other packages against the Titans. Clearly, the Rams want to see what kind of player they have in Hines, and given the amount of playing time he received last week, they have him penciled onto the 53-man roster.

Big ticket free agent acquisition Quintin Mikell entered the league as an undrafted free agent. Darian Stewart, who figures to start next to Mikell this week, was a UDFA pickup last year. Craig Dahl, last year's start that was replaced by Stewart, was an undrafted find when Spagnuolo was coaching the Giants. James Butler, you guessed it, an undrafted free agent in 2005.

Given their track record for where they find safety help, it speaks volumes about the opinion on Jermale Hines. Above, I mentioned five safeties; however, the Rams are likely to keep just four. Of course, that could change this year with a thin group at cornerback. Just looking at the list, it would seem that Butler's the odd man out. I suspect we'll see based on playing time and performance this week.

Rookie defensive backs on the bubble with Rams

Where does that leave Nelson and fellow rookie draft pick Jermale Hines? Squarely on the bubble, and playing for their professional lives in tonight's preseason finale in Jacksonville. Kickoff is at 6:30 (St. Louis time) at EverBank Field.

Nelson and Hines, a fifth-round pick from Ohio State, have had some good moments during preseason play. Hines had an interception in the exhibition opener against Indianapolis. Both have made sharp open-field tackles, been effective as blitzers and made plays on special teams.

Nelson (5-10, 195) is more of a rangy free safety type; Hines (6-1, 218) is more of a strong safety type at his best playing in the box. But the math at the safety position is the same for both rookies.

Only one of them will make the final 53 if the Rams keep only four safeties, and even so, it would be at the expense of Butler. The only way Hines and Nelson both make the final 53 is if the Rams keep five safeties. And again, the Rams would have to decide to part ways with Butler, who already has taken a pay cut at the start of camp.

The current roster stands at 80 players, meaning 27 players must be cut by the deadline Saturday afternoon. That makes Jacksonville a make-it or break-it proposition for about three dozen Rams tonight.

Nervous?

"I'd lie if I said I wasn't," Nelson said. "I'm just out here trying to contribute to the team. Hopefully I can make a good enough impression on the coaches for them to go ahead and slot me in. So we'll just see how it goes."

For his part, Hines said, "I'm not really focused on whether I'm going to make the team. I'm just going out there and trying to focus play by play."

Hines and Nelson are among seven draft picks, and 21 rookies overall, still on the roster. They all have tried to make their case to the coaching staff without benefit of minicamps and OTAs in the spring because of the lockout. And under the new labor agreement, two-a-days have been banned, so they've also had fewer practices in training camp to get acclimated to the NFL and learn the offense or defense.

"I've been making progress," Hines said. "It's starting to slow down a little. We're still installing some (defense), so some of the new things, you tend to mess up."
