S Kurt Coleman (All B1G, All-American)

Safety: Nate Allen will start at one slot. Of the safeties on the roster, he has shown the most potential.

But what about his partner in the defensive backfield? Roseman doesn?t sound inclined to add a veteran safety, at least not now. That gives Jaiquawn Jarrett, Kurt Coleman and undrafted free agent Phillip Thomas a chance to show what they can do in minicamps and offseason practices, and to learn by getting more reps. If none of them look up to par, maybe the team examines the position again as training camp nears or when teams cut veterans loose before the season.

For now, it seems clear that the Eagles would love their second round pick, Jarrett, to grab hold of the job, but Coleman has been the better player so far. Even as a rookie who himself missed much of the offseason because of Ohio State?s quarter system, Coleman did far more than Jarrett did in a truncated 2011 season.

Eagles' Kurt Coleman Is 'Playing It Forward'
Published : Friday, 04 May 2012

PHILADELPHIA - Eagles' safety Kurt Coleman is "Playing It Forward" with a new website, where he encourages people to realize the important things in life.

Where does football fall on that list for the hard-hitting Eagles defensive player? He joined "Good Day" on Friday morning to tell us.

Coleman talked about the dangers of playing football, how he dealt with an injury to Tyson Gentry, and the death this week of former all-pro linebacker Junior Seau.

Coleman says you always have to have balance in your life. In his case, it can't be just about football.

Here's a link to Coleman's website: http://kurt-coleman.com/play-it-forward-walk-with-coleman4acure/

On safety:
Reid talked up Kurt Coleman?s experience and said the team ?feels good? about his ability. As for adding a veteran, he said, ?that?s not where we?re at right now, but we keep our eyes open on everything. It?s kind of a fluid process as you go through minicamps and training camp you want to see how the pieces fit the puzzle.?

Sounds like the team will see what it has in Coleman and Jaiquawn Jarrett before making any move. Special teams play could be a factor here, as well.

Coleman, a 2010 seventh-round pick, started 13 games last season and, according to Reid, will head into the spring OTAs as the starter at strong safety.

Coleman plays hard, but is better suited for a role as a backup and core special-teamer than a starter. He's not a particularly good cover guy. He had a team-high four interceptions last season, but three of them came against charitable Rex Grossman in a mid-October win over the Redskins.

He misses too many tackles because he has a tendency to go for the kill shot rather than wrap up receivers and ballcarriers. And his 5-10, 195-pound body really isn't built for the rigors of a 16-game marathon.

According to STATS, Coleman was targeted 34 times last season and gave up 20 completions for a team-high 465 yards and four touchdowns. The only Eagle defender who gave up more touchdown passes than Coleman was linebacker Brian Rolle, who gave up five.

"Kurt's been productive every time he's played for us,'' Roseman said. "He makes plays. He's a smart guy. He can play either spot. He's effective on special teams. He's just a good player. We had a fourth-round grade on him when we drafted him.''

It didn?t come as a complete shock when Andy Reid said earlier this week that Nate Allen and Kurt Coleman would be his starting safeties when OTAs begin Tuesday. But it did hammer home ? once again ? that Jaiquawn Jarrett is not ready to start in the NFL. While formal full squad practices start in five days the Eagles have been at work since mid-April. Jarrett was supposed to benefit from a full offseason. If he had showed any improvement in the classroom ? where the bulk of work has been done over the last month ? you may have seen the Eagles hand him the job now knowing full well that there was still plenty of time for Coleman to win it back. But the Eagles want Coleman, who also has never had a full offseason, to get the repetitions. Of all the safeties on the roster, I?ve been told Coleman is the one that best ?gets it.? Jarrett, meanwhile, continues to struggle. I recently asked a defensive coach where the Temple product had issues he made a running motion with two fingers. Because Jarrett doesn?t have elite speed ? or anywhere near it ? he needs to make up for it by thinking one step ahead. And right now he?s a step behind. Reid didn?t draft a safety, nor did he acquire a free agent one, so he may not be as concerned as others are about the position. The fact that he expended two second round picks in the last two years may have had more to do with the oversight than anything. The Eagles have been rumored to be talking with Yeremiah Bell, but they aren?t likely to sign the former Dolphins safety. Undrafted rookie Phillip Thomas could push for a roster spot. As for Jarrett, there?s still time ? a month of OTAs, training camp, the preseason -- for him to supplant Coleman and justify that second round pick.

Nothing routine about Eagles' Allen, Coleman
Posted: Wednesday, May 30, 2012
By DAVID WEINBERG, Staff Writer

PHILADELPHIA-Eagles free safety Nate Allen swatted away quarterback Michael Vick's pass over the middle during last week's practice at the NovaCare Complex, producing cheers from the rest of the defense.

Strong safety Kurt Coleman immediately rushed up to Allen and the two broke out a choreographed celebration that rivaled Green Bay wide receiver Donald Driver's winning routine on "Dancing With the Stars."

They exchanged some low-fives and some high-fives, a flying hip bump, then capped it off by snapping their fingers while waving their hands.

"I developed it after watching some episodes of 'Fresh Prince of Bel Air,' " Coleman said. "I grew up watching the show and used to see Fresh Prince (Philadelphia native Will Smith) and D.J. Jazzy Jeff do stuff like that all the time. I know Will's from here, so I wanted to do something that would bring a little bit of Philly into it."

Allen and Coleman are hoping to treat Eagles fans to the routine a lot this season. After enduring trying seasons in 2011, they entered the team's organized team activities (OTAs) determined to recapture the promise both showed as rookies in 2010.

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES

Strong safety: Kurt Coleman versus Jaiquawn Jarrett.

This one got even more interesting with the recent signing of veteran O.J. Atogwe. Given his recent injury history and how slow he looked when actually on the field with the Redskins last year, I still think Atogwe is more likely to be a backup and a veteran mentor than a threat to the starting spot opposite free safety Nate Allen. But it's possible that neither Coleman nor Jarrett will impress enough to win the job. Jarrett is the team's 2011 second-round pick, and they have high hopes for him. He didn't show much last year, and his main problem is that the thing for which he was best known in college -- hard hitting -- is not something he's able to demonstrate during an offseason program. If he can make strides in coverage and then lay some people out in preseason games, he might have a chance to grab the starting spot. But if Coleman beats him out and Atogwe is healthy enough to stick, people will justifiably start wondering whether Jarrett really has a future as a starter in Philadelphia.

Safety

The Eagles insisted all spring they were copacetic with Kurt Coleman opposite Nate Allen, backed up by 2011 second-rounder Jaiquawn Jarrett, who barely got on the field as a rookie. Then, after reviewing all the spring tape, the Birds signed veteran O.J. Atogwe. I'll be shocked if Allen doesn't start, but after that, who knows? Coaches built up Coleman all spring ? not sure anybody works harder to improve ? but he was a 2010 seventh-round draft pick for a reason. He isn't big or fast, and he misses tackles. Coleman is a guy you want on your team, maybe not as a starter. Atogwe, franchised by the Rams 3 years ago, is 31 now, and he was cut loose in January by a 5-11 Redskins team. He missed all the Eagles spring work and will be learning the defense from scratch at Lehigh. The guy I think is on the roster bubble here is Jarrett, the former Temple star, who as a rookie didn't seem to have the frame or the quickness to back up his big hitter rep. It's not that big a deal, in a lockout year, for a rookie not to get a lot of snaps from scrimmage, but Jarrett couldn't seem to make himself useful on special teams. That's a red flag.

Coleman Not Looking For A Handout
By Patrick Wall

As a player in the NFL, worrying too much about losing your job can lead to that fear becoming a reality. In a game where competition arises from all sides ? not only from players on the other team but also from players on your own team ? self-confidence is paramount. For safety Kurt Coleman, this reality is something he knows well.

A seventh-round pick out of Ohio State in 2010, Coleman beat the odds and made the Eagles roster his rookie season. Last year, Coleman entered the season in the starting lineup. He was benched after the Week 3 loss to the Giants, but worked his way back into the lineup and posted a team-high four interceptions.

Now in his third year, Coleman is ready to step up.

?I don?t want any handouts,? Coleman said after practice Friday. ?I want everything to be earned and I?m going to go out there and take everything I can get. I feel like I?m one of the hardest workers out here. I believe in myself and this team, so every day I?m going to come out here and prove myself.?

After regaining the starting role, Coleman did not disappoint. He was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week for his three interception performance against the Redskins in Week 6. He also finished the year second on the team in tackles with 96.

Eagles Scoop: Coleman hopes for better effort against Steelers
Published: Thursday, August 09, 2012

@MattChandik

BETHLEHEM ? Kurt Coleman doesn?t have any warm, fuzzy memories of the last time the Eagles took on the Pittsburgh Steelers in a preseason game.

?Last year, they got a hold of us,? Coleman said of the Steelers? 24-14 win in Week 2 of the 2011 preseason. ?I remember watching the film over the weekend, and we didn?t look so good. So we have a lot of redemption as far as our own pride and coming out there strong. We want to start the preseason off right so we can go into the season with all of our weapons loaded and ready to go.?

Coleman and the Eagles will get that chance tonight when they host Pittsburgh at 7:30 at Lincoln Financial Field in the preseason opener for both teams.

The game marks the first game back on the sidelines for Andy Reid since his 29-year-old son Garrett?s death Sunday. Reid could have easily skipped the Keystone State battle ? no one could have possibly blamed him ? but he indicated that Garrett wouldn?t have wanted it that way.

?You feel the strength of the team,? Reid said. ?I felt it with my family the past couple of days, and I feel it with the team. I?m a football coach, that?s what I do, and I know my son wouldn?t want it any other way.?

Reid indicated that the Eagles would give a quarter of play to all four of their quarterbacks, in order of their spot on the depth chart. Michael Vick will play the first quarter and he?ll be followed by Mike Kafka, rookie Nick Foles and Trent Edwards, respectively.

Defensive ends Trent Cole and Jason Babin, safety Nate Allen, tight end Brent Celek, wide receiver Riley Cooper, cornerback Cliff Harris and offensive lineman Brandon Washington will all miss the game with injuries. Those injuries could hinder the chances Harris and Washington have of making the team. Harris, an undrafted free agent out of Oregon, has been impressive in camp, but it?s hard to make the team while in the training room. Washington hasn?t received the same type of praise as Harris, and he needs to play to prove that he?s one of the best 53 players available.

Coleman, though, doesn?t have that problem. He admitted that last year?s Steelers game still sticks in his craw. The way he tells the story, maybe it shouldn?t have been so surprising when the Eagles came out so slow defensively out of the gates a year ago.

?It really was (a wake-up call),? Coleman said. ?It really set in when I was watching (the film). Nobody was on the same page, it was just really sloppy football. I think partly due to the lockout and everything, but no excuses being said. We just didn?t play well. So this year, I think we?re going to come out and play like we have out here in training camp.?
