Coleman won't need surgery on biceps
January 3, 2012

Safety Kurt Coleman, placed on injured reserve last week after suffering a biceps injury during the Dallas game, said his rehab is going ?real well? and said he won?t need surgery and will be 100 percent in time for the first minicamp after the draft this spring.

?Once I took the MRI, there was a little damage to the muscle, but the tendons are fine and we knew I wouldn?t need surgery, so that?s definitely good news,? Coleman said. ?I already have full mobility back in my arm, and it?s just about getting my strength back in my biceps. But it?s only a matter of a couple of weeks and I?ll be back to normal.?

Rookie Jaiquawn Jarrett played well Sunday in place of Coleman and could challenge Coleman -- or Nate Allen -- for a starting job next year. Coleman finished the season with a team-high four interceptions -- three off Rex Grossman -- and Allen had two interceptions, both off Grossman.

?I thought in certain areas of my game I definitely got better, as far as making plays, doing something with the ball and being able to become an emerging leader on this team,? said Coleman, who bounced back from an early-season benching to regain his starting job.

?But my job was left unfinished, I think this team?s job was left unfinished and I have a lot to work for in this new year. And I?m excited because I think we have a great thing coming back.?

Don't expect Eagles to upgrade at safety

For the Courier-Post

Right behind linebacker on the list of positions Eagles fans are begging the front office to upgrade is safety.

If linebacker is the No. 1 weakness, safety is No. 1-A.

But unlike linebacker, which the front office has mainly stocked with mid- to low-level draft talent, the Eagles haven?t treated safety like the defense?s red-headed step-child.

And they haven?t pretended in this era of pass-first offenses that they can tame some of the NFL?s most prolific aerial offenses with safeties named Willie, Frank or Stan.

The reality is the Eagles have used second-round picks on safeties in each of the past two drafts, plucking Nate Allen two years ago and Jaiquawn Jarrett last year, so it?s unreasonable to think they?re going waste another high pick this April on a safety so that one of the three can ride the bench.

Allen and Kurt Coleman almost certainly will open as the starters, and Jarrett will be given every opportunity this spring and summer to fulfill his potential and elbow his way onto the field.

Kurt Coleman, a 2010 seventh-round pick, started 13 games at strong safety last season. He finished second on the team in tackles, but at 5-10 and just 190 pounds, he really isn't big enough to be a 16-game-a-year box safety. And despite a team-high four interceptions last season (three compliments of Rex Grossman), he doesn't have the coverage skills to match up with the league's top tight ends and slot receivers.

"He may be the smallest safety in the league," one scout said of Coleman. "I like the way he plays. He has a nose for the ball and he's not afraid to hit anybody. But there's no way you can count on him staying healthy. You're going from 15-yard depth on a full sprint to fill these [running] lanes and blow guys up. It's only a matter of time before he breaks down."

I can understand the concern, but to say "he'll get injured" as if it's some sort of fact is pretty dumb.

Or maybe it IS a fact...and a fact that every guy in the league will face at some point. It's the NFL. Almost NOBODY gets through without injuries...so OF COURSE he'll get injured someday.

So yeah, pretty banal statement.

Small DBs that have a nose for the ball and like to hit people just can't make it in the league. Look at Antoine Winfield and Donte Whitner. Tiny. No way they can hack it.

But for every Winfield there's a Bob Sanders or two. Physics will win eventually if you're 200 lbs and play like you're at 250.
