OSU defensive back looking forward to time with family

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Six-year-old Kurt Coleman was on a fly route. The Christmas egg was in the air, courtesy of a pass from his 10-year-old brother, Kyle. His mother, who had just gotten home from work, could not believe her eyes.

That was her egg. Custom-painted by a Dayton-area artist, it was her one special gift that Christmas, presented by her husband before the holiday so it could be on display. And it was being tossed around like a football by her two sons, or as Heidi Williams recalled, "I remembered seeing it arcing through the air."

Talk about a Christmas memory, "Kurt did not catch it," said Williams, able to laugh about it 12 years later. "And it went 'smash!' "

Kyle Coleman had to plead with the artist to paint another egg for his mother and then pay for it.

And Kurt? "Really, he was pretty innocent. He was just being manipulated by big brother," Williams said.

No doubt that story will come up at the Christmas dinner table today in Clayton, Ohio, as the large family gathers round. Maybe someone will even point out that miss was the first true sign that Kurt, now a junior at Ohio State, was destined to become a defensive back instead of a receiver.

Theirs is sort of a Brady Bunch Christmas. Expected today along with Heidi and her husband, Jim Williams, are Kurt, Kyle and their older sister Susan from Heidi's previous marriage; step-brother David and step-sister Megan from Jim Williams' first marriage; and Jim and Heidi's 12-year-old daughter, Cassie. Susan's fiance also will be there, as will Heidi's mother, Mary Protheroe, 89, plus Heidi's sister Pam Sturtz and her daughter, Margie.

"Oh, yes, the place should be packed," said Heidi Williams, who started cooking for the gathering two days ago.

Coleman says he's 'iffy' on whether to turn pro
Senior QB Boeckman readies for final game of his OSU career.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. ? Part of Kurt Coleman's preparation for the Fiesta Bowl includes the waterfall treatment pool at the Willow Stream spa at the Fairmont Princess, Ohio State's team hotel.

"It's a daily event," Coleman, a Northmont High School graduate, said with a chuckle at media day Friday, Jan. 2.

Coleman, like quarterback Todd Boeckman (St. Henry), will turn to more strenuous pursuits when his Buckeyes meet Texas on Monday in the Fiesta Bowl.

It will be senior Boeckman's last game, and it could be junior Coleman's last, too.

After submitting his NFL paperwork, Coleman was told he likely would be selected on the second day if he chose to enter the draft. Maybe in the fourth round, he has heard. It is enticing.

"It was good news. It definitely helped me narrow down my decision," said Coleman, a two-year starter at strong safety who has a team-high four interceptions and is third on the team with 67 tackles.

"It is always good to hear that you are liked, and that they see you as someone they can use in the league (NFL)," Coleman said. "At the combine, you can always increase your size, but you can never replace your fourth year in college."

Coleman comes from a family of nine.

"There are a lot of mouths to feed, but ultimately it just comes down to what feels right," he said. "I am still iffy-iffy. I would love to stay another year and play for Ohio State, but I have to do what's best for my family. I think ending this season up correctly with a big bang would be a big determining factor."

Offered friday by JT. Kurt can play either safety or corner but he prefers corner. tOSU is his favorite right now. He hopes to make a decision by summer.

If he stays, any chance we move him to corner next year?

I think Kurt is probably a 4th or 5th right now, and have the potential to truly make his mark at OSU and improve his stock. He would be well-served by coming back for one more year.

Kurt is a safety....he is a sure tackler in run support. His coverage has been solid from the position.

And his NFL draft grade came back as a 2nd-3rd rounder at safety, if he were to leave today. He's playing safety next year.

Hopefully Washington comes back to improve his stock, and starts with Chimdi. I think we'll have another season of Russell and Coleman which is a good thing, IMO.

Ohio State football: Kurt Coleman still deciding NFL future
by Doug Lesmerises
Monday January 12, 2009

I just spoke with Ron Coleman, the father of Ohio State junior safety Kurt Coleman, and when asked of his son's decision about whether to stay in school or go to the NFL, he said, "If you find out, let me know."
Ron Coleman said he and his son spoke for about three hours on Sunday about the choice, and the "decision is in Kurt's court at this very moment," Ron Coleman said.

"I have not heard from Kurt as to what he has chosen to do, and that is absolutely the truth," Ron Coleman said. "The opportunity to be at the Ohio State University and be a three-year starter and possibly be a captain and the things that are in line ... it's going to be a wonderful choice to make and it's a difficult choice to make for anybody, especially a young man.

"I'm working every day, so it's not like he has to come out and take care of me or his mother. So we'll support him 100 percent whatever he decides."

A draft analyst I spoke with after the Fiesta Bowl was impressed with Coleman's play in the game and thought he may have worked himself into a second- or third-round choice, but he also believed Coleman has a chance to make himself into a first-rounder if he returns for his senior season.
