OSU Notebook: Kurt Coleman shows he can cover as well as hit
Sunday, April 20, 2008
BY Mike Popovich
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER
COLUMBUS Kurt Coleman's reputation is as a big hitter. But don't underestimate the Ohio State strong safety's ability to make a big catch, too.
Coleman had one on the third play of Saturday's spring game at Ohio Stadium. Todd Boeckman threw a deep pass intended for Brian Hartline, but the junior from Dayton went stride for stride with Hartline and picked it off.
"I feel like I have the speed to contend with anybody and can cover anybody," Coleman said. "I don't want to be known as just a hitter. I want to make plays, hitting or making interceptions."
No one has to convince Hartline.
"That was a great play," he said. "It was raining pretty hard, so I was going to let it come to me instead of me going to it so I wouldn't drop it. I had Kurt probably by about 4 yards. ... It was one of those things where he made an awesome play."
with out going into a complete tirade and turning this into a brian hartline thread, hartline needs to learn and go get the ball. brian "longaberger basket catch" hartline needs to stop with the basket catch and go get the ball, stop waiting on the ball to come to him, comeback and get the ball, multiple interceptions last year should have been caught or broken up...Jim Davidson took some really great shots of the spring game. Here's Coleman's pick.

Familiar and Not So Familiar Names Appear to be Improved Players Headed into Fall Camp
By John Porentas
OSU safety Kurt Coleman has a different look about him this fall. So, for that matter, does running back Beanie Wells.
Coleman and Wells are two Buckeyes that you can just look at while they are sitting in a chair and know they are changed players from the ones that walked into fall camp last season. The changes are both physical and mental and are obvious the minute you talk to them..
For Coleman, the long, tough summer conditioning program this year has helped him get noticeably bigger.
"Last year I was about 185, 186," said Coleman, "Now I'm a solid 196."
"It was just working hard and running and my brother kept forcing me to eat and eat and eat.
"Eric Lichter's workout helped me get a lot stronger and faster in the off season as it has everyone else," Coleman said.

Did you know? Kurt spent the winter student teaching ... he has a brother, Kyle, who graduated from Ohio State ... he is the Ohio State chapter vice president of Uplifting Athletes, a student-run organization that raises awareness for cancer.
Quotable:
On facing the many weapons on Ohio State's offense in practice
"It is hard to defend and you cannot specialize on one person. You have to make sure you study every person because it is always a different package. It makes game planning that much harder in stopping it."
On opposing teams running the spread offense
"You just have to make sure you are mentally prepared for that, as well as physically. We have been running a lot and can handle the spread and the no huddle. Hopefully this year, we can gameplan and get some more stunts and create a little more mismatches."
